That's really sucks for him and us. I hope he does the right thing for himself, his future and family.

I could not imagine making it this far only to be faced with this kind of decision

Soul crushing choices

McD is likely trying to convince the kid that football isn’t worth possibly getting paralyzed or worse based on an injury that may heighten the risk of disastrous injury

Maybe football isn't worth the risk.

But is millions of dollars worth it?

That would be an individual's personal choice, but I'd be a yes on that one.

This is the kind of organization that will IR him for a year or two, pay him and let him heal.

Which would certainly make me want to work hard to see if I could get back

Sucks for the kid.   Never want someone’s dream cut short like this.  Hopefully, he does what’s best for a long, healthy life.

Yes I could certainly see them doing that; let him sit on IR to earn a paycheck then see if he can play again or just wishes to retire

So Strong and Sanders were severely hurt in practice, while Daquan Jones was hurt during warmups (not to mention Oliver’s first injury occurred in practice). The defense is snake-bit this year.

Somehow Taylor Rapp was to blame each time

You have to assume, given the nature of this injury this early in his career, that there’s a pretty good chance he doesn’t make it to a second contract. Is $4.4M before taxes worth risking your ability to independently feed yourself for the rest of your life over?

Absolutely? There are loads of people who do more dangerous work for a fraction of the money.

Would they continue to after a near miss is the question.

It sounds cruel, but many jobs are dangerous.

I realize that the NFL is simply entertainment, but this coudl be life-changing money for Strong.

For perspective, my son is repainting the Liberty One tower in Philly.  About 1300 feet.  Getting paid <$50K.

No amount of money is worth paralysis.

Based on a Chris brown report? I'm not going to assume his career is over. Maybe season is over.

... Huh?

Chris Brown is literally just quoting Sean McDermott from his Press Conference. As are all other reporters that were there. Why would it make a difference who the reporter was that was directly quoting McDermott?

Would you feel better about these reporters quoting McDermott's own words more?

Spinal disc injuries are no joke - and the smaller the injured disc (cervical < thoractic < lumbar) the worse the outcome.  He may have to hang it up.

Or if your remember Derek Burroughs I think they discovered spinal stenosis after a neck injury like this ... oliver luck comes to mind too

I suspect the injury and subsequent testing revealed spinal stenosis such that damage could result in permanent paralysis.  I’d advise any athlete to walk away; it is a game after all, not worth destroying your life over, or even losing it.

Is this something that could have happened in one practice? Or could it have been a degenerative issue, unknown by team doctors at the time he was drafted?

The stenosis doesn’t occur in one practice.  An injury leading to X ray or MRI would.  I don’t know if teams routinely screen for this or not.
