If you subscribe to PFF.

82.3 overall PFF grade.  7th of 117 safeties.  Pass coverage grade was 8th at 81.7.  Run defense was 35th at 74.4.

Why would they release him if he’s so good? What would be their reasoning?

FWIW that's the exact opposite of how Gunner Bill sees him in the post above yours.

Pats fans seem to be upset that he was released. My guess is they asked him to take a paycut and he declined, so with his injury history and presumably a new defensive scheme they are letting him go. But we could have him for the vet minimum because of offset language in his contract so there's no risk to us. And he has the exact type of skillset you use as a chess piece with very specific packages.

I don't see any kind of downside here. I doubt any team is offering him a starting job so give him our best pitch for the role he'll play on a Super Bowl contending team.

I'm a little fuzzy on the rules here.  If a team offered him a new multi year contract would the Patriots still be on the hook for all the guaranteed money they owe him?  Basically, could Peppers double dip?

I expect this is similar to some of the stuff McDermott and Beane did when they took over in 2017.  They moved on from a bunch of players who were good (Gilmore, in FA) or could play (Ron Darby, 2015 2nd round pick - started for us 2 years and was still starting in the league last year at age 30).  In some cases it was because they didn't fit what McDermott wanted to do defensively; in others it was because they had trade value and Beane wanted to stockpile picks; in some cases it was because they weren't "culture fits"

Obviously Peppers has no trade value or they wouldn't have cut him, but my guess is, he either doesn't fit the culture or defensive scheme for Vrabel

Why can't a team ever release a Free Safety?

Every time I see a S released, I get my hopes up then see it's just an in-the-box thumper type guy. Peppers is not even close to a fit for our current safety needs.

Scheme fit I get but I also think much like the 2017 Bills trades if other teams liked his fit in their schemes then the Pats could have at least gotten a later round pick swap for him.

He doesn’t have a gigantic salary cap hit either that would make him untradeable. I don’t mind the Bills grabbing him if they think he’s better than what they have but I doubt that’s true given the circumstances

Unknown but mostly no.

Here's how it breaks down:

The Pats have $4.5M of amortized signing bonus on the books for Peppers ($4.5M at $1.5M per year).  That stays with the Pats, no matter what.

But according to Spotrac (and not included in that $4.5M) the Pats owe him $2.5M in guaranteed 2025 salary.

If Spotrac is correct, then in theory another team signing could provide the Patriots with a minimum of $1.255M salary relief (vet minimum for 8 yr vet) up to $2.5M  IF Peppers does not have language in his contract which allows him to double-dip.  That's not a contract detail that usually trickles out to the fans.

I'd go with Gunner because I'm worthless when it comes to players on other teams.  PFF is the only reference I have.

I was never the biggest fan of his game. He was like a Jamal Adams lite.

I think he has value used correctly but I’m not banging on the table for him. I’m not sure his skillset is what we are missing.

imo, the Bills need the FS they can trust in the center of the field.

I’ll give Vrabel and Wolf this, they are cleaning house on guys that don’t fit what Vrabel wants or expects. We’ll see how it plays out and whether it backfires or not

I do think Vrabel very much knows what he is doing and how he wants to build that team out, even though I can’t stand him. Was pissed he ended up in NE. I think he will right the ship there unfortunately.

He seems to be regarded as a Strong Safety, meaning better playing in the box and against the run

It seems like we could have desire for a large safety/small linebacker because they have tried recently with Cine and Ciarlo. Don't know if it makes sense at this time as part of the 53 and I doubt he would want to sit on the PS.
