Like the content on DL investment where Beane said "let's take some swings at defenseive line." I think the failure of getting talent there is on OBD's mind.ย

ย

I had to laugh when the question of Beane's son working for the Giants as a scout came up and Beane said "he's fortunate enough to get an interview with Giants." Really? Fortunate? I bet the interview question Schoen had in that interview is "can you tell your dad don't forget me when I'm let go here." Note his son interned in Carolina first and guess who runs Panthers front office there?

Like the saying goes, it's not what you know, but who you know.ย  For better or worse, networking opens up doors that hard work cannot.ย ย

In some instances, and fields, yes. But there are still cases where those who work hard, and keep their heads down, get the recognition and advancement they deserve.ย

โ€œTerry was strongly against drafting a certain player and we took him anyway. Later when that player worked out, heโ€™d tell everyone he was glad he convinced us to draft him.โ€ย

Wonder who that player could be.

I wonder how much gate keeping holds back the evolution of the game. ย I get genetics matter for on the field performance so having familial connections is logical. But off the field should seemingly be more open and yet feels just as insular. Barrier to entry is tricky cause it takes years to learn the nuances and the relationship of coaches would get that for free. As football becomes more accessible from video review online Iโ€™m excited to see what new approaches people previously unable to learn can bring.ย

Has to be a first or second round pick imo.

ย

Thoughts would be Josh, Edmunds, Eddy, Rousseau, Cook, OCT?

It still matters though. You get recognition from certain individuals, they get promoted and/ switch employers, then offer you higher pay, promotion, etc to move up with them. Itโ€™s earned nepotism, but still a result of who you know.ย

Agree that it was a first or second rounder. With as diligent as they were with Josh, including private jet visits to Wyoming, Iโ€™d say thereโ€™s no way itโ€™s him. They had to be in unanimous agreement there. If I were to guess, Iโ€™d say it was Oliver - a bit of an undersized DT who had a highly publicized spat with his college coach. The pick also didnโ€™t require a trade up.

If you want to try to guess who it could be, you can start by eliminating any first rounders not named Josh Allen.

You know, after I posted that I thought it was Oliver, I got to thinkingโ€ฆ thereโ€™s not a home run draft pick Beane has hit on - besides Allen - thatโ€™s worthy of Terryโ€™s bragging. That said, Iโ€™d still be surprised if it was Josh as thatโ€™s the one position everyone should be united on.

The more I think about it, it might be Rousseau.

ย

For pick #30, heโ€™s been productive but he was pretty raw coming out. And itโ€™s not like heโ€™s been terribly underwhelming for his draft position. I would say heโ€™s exceeded expectation for his draft status than Ed has overall.

ย

The only alternative if Beane is talking about Eddy after 23.

I'd guess Cook.

Can you give examples of โ€œreal Terry guys?โ€

I wonder if TP wanted Rosen, and Kim laid down the law, and said "Allen". ๐Ÿค”

He's reputed to be fond of anyone with a well-drilling background.

I feel like I remember one of the embedded videos during that draft where Pegula actually asked Beane "can we move up enough to get Allen?" or something along those lines.
