Sure it was. You seem to think that making a team competitive after 17 years of missing the playoffs should happen immediately.

Being an alarmist? I interpreted the OP to be more geared to the Sabres potentially moving. In any event thinking the Bills leaving is still a possibility at this point with a new stadium more than half finished is pure silliness.

Gee, another irrational Pergula hater joins in. Color me shocked…

When a guy has a historically bad run with a team in the big 4 leagues, it is not irrational to go "man this guy could really be a major liability in the post McBeane/Allen era".

How the Sabres do has no bearing ant all on how the Bills do.  As long as they have Josh Allen at quarterback, they will be a good team. And if McBeane gets removed, there will be many good GM’s and coaches clamoring for the positions.

Pegs may be the first major sports owner in the US to sell a professional team at a loss. I’m not sure he can give the Sabres away.

If the COYOTES can find a home in Utah and the Kraken established in Seattle, then that is definitely a ridiculous statement to make. The Sabres could be bought up by a Quebec group and moved to Quebec City or even investment from a group to move them to Houston. Remember the North Stars? The Nordiques? The Whalers? Anything is possible.

If, and only If, Terry stipulates that the new owner has to keep the team in Buffalo will have to take a lot less for it.

I am under no false belief that he would keep them in Buffalo no matter what... from what I have seen, the profit motive has become more prevalent. I used to be a Pirates fan, and you can see how much the league factors in how the fans are treated 😞 Manfred doesn't give AF and neither does Bettman.

It's possible for the Sabres but highly unlikely. As bad of an owner as Pegula has been the Sabres were still his "first love" before the Bills. If they go up for sale I can see a stipulation similar to Wilson (or even Golisano) that a buyer must commit to keeping the team in Buffalo. You have to remember that despite the dismal status of the Sabres, the franchise is worth 1.1 billion per Forbes. Pegula has made a very nice return on his original 160 million investment.

I'm not entirely convinced he is looking to sell. The arena upgrades are going to be the big determinant. I think Pegula is biding his time knowing NYS just invested so much in the Bills stadium and realizing his hockey club needs to become more competitive before asking for public funding.

Regardless, Buffalo is such a strong hockey market that it is very difficult to believe the NHL would want to see the team relocated whatever Pegula decides to do.

I am beginning to think that the only thing between the Sabres relocating and not right now is the disparity in the fee the NHL collects for a new franchise vs a relocation.  Currently $2 Billion via $200 Million.  I would not be at all surprised that Terry is looking for an exit ramp from the Sabres nightmare, but easier said than done.

Pegula is just doing house cleaning of his financial portfolio, as men his age like to do.

He's getting rid of marginal operations.*

He's keeping profitable operations.

Nothing to see here.

* he'd sell the Sabres if he could, but he would do so at a loss right now and is waiting for them to uptick in value

EDIT: * he'd sell the Sabres but they would sell below market value, he is waiting for them to uptick in value

I don’t think he’s looking for an exit ramp.

He paid $150M for them. He is not seeing at least a 6X return.

The 2024 value of the Sabres according to Forbes is just north of $1 Billion.

If the league was going to do anything it would be expansion. Emperor Goodell would love for more teams for more revenue. Everyone knows Buffalo is a football mad city and a special football market. I doubt the league wants to lose that. With the new stadium the Bills future in WNY has never been more secure.

Definitely. Willing to spend $1 billion plus on the Sabres?
