This makes me think of my college hoops board where there is a thread on dwindling enrollment and sky high tuition and expenses. You HOPE that your education and degree will land you one of those entry level jobs……that are going to go away. Do you want to come out of college with a shiny new diploma and hundreds of thousand$ in student debt looking for a job that no longer exists? Spending four years on that Marketing or English Lit degree is sounding like an expensive vacation that might not pay off at all. 

 

I’m all questions with no answers, but I wonder if more people will pursue work in the trades, make a very good living and not pile up the student loans? Some things still need to be done by people, at least for now. 

 

I'm telling my son to focus on STEM degrees.  The other degrees get you Sales or HR jobs and those are hard to get with the saturation in the market.  

Or learn a skilled trade.

My kid’s at Moog, says they can’t fill jobs and are incentivizing eligible retirees to stay on. Plus there’s been an uptick in Defense contracts and not just there. STEM sounds a good way to go. Would venture to say it’s better now than awhile back, two of mine graduated with B.E. around 2007, it wasn’t a smooth transition into the work market then.

When I dropped out of H.S., granted it was in the ‘70’s, trades were near impossible to get in. Had a neighbor who was a union rep in the Iron Workers saying he’d get me in, after a year, I gave up. Now trades are so desperate they advertise on the radio around here in Buffalo. Again, don’t think you can go wrong there either.

At one point we were offering electricians $10,000 sign on bonuses because we were so desperate in some locations.

The biggest targets of AI are going to be entry-level coding jobs, stuff that’s dead simple to automate. 
 

Not great news for people who had “learn to code” drilled into them.

I have a friend that owns a technology company in San Francisco and he told me 10 years ago he saw a computer programming other computers at a convention.

He told me Front End Developers will be obsolete by 2030-2035.  I have other friends who are Front End Developers and they said the same thing....they need to start transitioning to AI to keep a job.

A Computer Science Degree with an AI concentration is very valuable.  But your general Web Developer is going to go away.  AI will build sites instantly and that's insane for me to think about.

I've told all my kids they better look into software engineering because every other job will be extinct in a few years.

I think thats where humans will draw the line.   They want to make work less expensive but they do not want to give up control.

 

Humans are too self centered to allow it.
