We keep at least 5 at each DE and DT. At times, we've kept 6 at each. We had 6 in 2023 at DE and we ended last season with 6 at DT (Oliver, Jones, Johnson, Carter, Jefferson, Phillips). It's fairly common for us to have 11 on the DL.

With Hoecht and Ogunjobi suspended, we actually aren't that crowded at all. We're at the minimum we keep for each position at 10 total with Groot, Bosa, AJE, Jackson, and Solomon at DE and Oliver, Jones, Sanders, Walker, and Carter at DT.

If we trade AJE and/or Jones before Week 7, we're not only not crowded - we're shorthanded. Especially with how often we rotate. A single injury would put us in a tough spot.

It wouldn't be unheard of to keep 12 along the DL when Hoecht and Ogunjobi return. And there will surely be injuries in the first 6 weeks that could make room for them. Maybe even along the DL.

I don't think either will be cut or traded. If that does happen, I don't see it happening before Week 7. I don't see the team leaving themselves possibly short handed or making room for Ogunjobi and Hoecht before they have them.

And I don't think they should. Keep the DL as deep as you can to the point where we're rotating in a quality player at all times.

All fair points, I think if the target is to keep 11 D-line as they usually do then having 12 does not make for that crowded a field when 2 guys are suspended for a third of the season.

I assume the "cast off" was Bosa.

But with the draft investment with the guys we took among with Bosa and the PED twins, it's pretty clear that Beane has invested in DL this year and I would assume any other large investments in the spot is off the table for now.

Players have gotten smarter. The ones on top of things do a "hold in" where they show to camp, attend meetings and lift..but don't partake in football activities. It does just enough to avoid the fines.

Do they ever post cryptically to Twitter?

Yea, Bills can't use a 17 sack guy each of the last three years...trade next years first if you have to its going to be a high pick anyways and go all in. Does $70M guaranteed get it done?

it's of course super fun to think of this rotation:

Hendrickson
Bosa

Rousseau

L. Jackson

+Rousseau is good enough rushing the passer from inside that we could use the big 3 on 3rd downs

0.5% chance he's traded to the Bills though.

When it comes to Bengals Owner vs Anybody.... Its an automatic to side with the anybody.  Easily top 5 worst owners, not to mention he's too broke to be an NFL owner in 2025.

Too poor?

Anyway, it's a business.  Any owner would and should take pause before agreeing to pay maybe 20 million more, per year, for one guy on one of the worst Defenses in the league.

 LOL at "PED twins" awesome

I wonder if Beane ever wanted to make a run at Trey. I would have,  AND spent for him.

There were a few options pre draft.

But Beane made a fine effort to upgrade the Whole Defense this offseason imho

You'd be the only GM in the world willing to do so.

Jones is the one id consider "iffy".  Nothing about how he finished the season gives me hope he will contribute alot this year.

All depends on how Carter and Walker look at camp too.  Daquan looked done last year, if he declines in camp + 2 aforementioned players prove to be ready, then that 5th DT will be a placeholder/Prac Squad callup if needed for week 1-6.

I was in the camp that we should have moved on from him. But I feel like if they felt the same way, they'd have worked harder early in Free Agency or higher in the Draft to sign and/or Draft a big time 1T.

I think the plan is to rotate Jones more and keep him fresh. Move Sanders over there on obvious passing downs to rush alongside Oliver. But I really don't see much of a chance that they're going to hand the position over to a Round 4 Rookie coming off of a bad back and DeWayne Carter, who would be transitioning to 1T and honestly looked worse than Jones to end last season.

Exactly this. They extended Rousseau long term with an 80m deal. They paid Bosa 12.5m for 2025. They signed Hoecht to a long term deal for 21m. They Drafted Landon Jackson with Pick 72.

You don't do all of that and then Trade a Day 2 Pick and pay a 9 figure contract to a guy to put over top of all of that.

We're like only 2 months removed from the Myles Garrett situation of a "fractured relationship".

No relationship is fractured when it comes to money. If the Bengals change course and give him what he wants, he'll sign and it will all be water under the bridge.

For most teams, true.

The Bengals are known for difficulty getting liquid enough to pay players, finally just paid a QB and their two WR’s and currently have two rookies holding out due to the franchise being the only one without injury assurances for rookies.

Bengals are a mess, they need a new owner.

They are a competent owner away from being a superbowl contender. I know their defense is crap but the right owner could fix that.

That team with a mis pack defense is a SB contender

They will be a problem this year IMO

Trey Hendrickson is never coming to the Bills for cap reasons. My biggest hope is he separates from the Bengals and goes to the NFC to weaken one of our AFC rivals

Hendrickson is not playing for the Bengals. He is willing to sit out the season rather than not get a new deal. They probably assured him that after he signed a one year extension in 2023 that they would "take care" of him longer term after the 2024 season. Hendrickson had a great 2024 and now he wants to get paid on the last year of his contract. He views them as being "dishonorable" and with only one year left on his contract he knows the Bengals leverage is less. The Bengals don't want to commit big money to an older pass rusher. We can at least be assured that Hendrickson is not playing for the Bengals. Honestly I am also not sure what team has the cap space and "win now" willingness to trade a good (I would say the Bengals aren't taking less than a 2nd rounder) draft pick for him either.

It's a sticky situation and I could honestly see it ending with Hendrickson sitting out the year.

I’d probably offer a 3rd and Epenesa then figure it out financially if they somehow accept the trade.

Gives them the pick id imagine most are offering plus a player to replace him this year given we’re post-draft.  Makes room in our rotation and frees up 6M.

Less than 5% chance id ever see the Bengals trading him to us though.

I hate to say it, but I side w the team on this, he wants a lot, he’s older and you are paying more for past performance than you expect to get in the future.  It’s tough, but how many more years do you really expect from him? Maybe 2 at that level?

Nobody said Myles Garrett is too old to be paid, but Hendrickson is almost exactly one year older than Myles Garrett. Hendrickson led the league in sacks last season and was pretty much the Bengals only player on defense. Do people rate Garrett higher due to his draft position?

100% they do and I think the Garrett contract is questionable too.  Cleveland is the last team I’d look to if I’m trying to judge intelligent contracts lol. Nonetheless, at 30 to give him a deal that massive, all guaranteed and hope he has 4 more great years before time catches up?  Thats no small task, these are MASSIVE men, doing things our bodies aren’t really designed to do, it’s not typical to see guys perform at a high level for much past 32.  Are there exceptions? Sure.  Would I bet on it with my own money? No thank you.

Cleveland really had to keep Garrett happy to save face.  Hendrickson, for as good as he’s been, is not a star.  To pay the 4th most popular player and the gap from 3rd to 4th being massive in terms of recognition, that much money, you need to be sure he’s worth it.   With age being a real concern and not enough star power to justify the move initially and take the risk on lower production, it’s probably not a good investment for the Bengals.

For a team that’s on the cusp and thinks an elite pass rusher puts them over the top THIS YEAR, sure take the risk, think of Miller to the Bills.  If you win a SB nobody is going to argue, or at very least if you get close, it’s acceptable.  The Bengals D really can’t be that much worse without him, they have gone all in on Burrow being able to lead the charge.   In their case, I think they would be better served to get what they can get and move on.  Should have done it before the draft, but maybe they thought they were going to be able to do something with him.

Cincy, would never trade a top 5 DE to a competitive rival like us.  They know even though they’ve owned us, they want to ship him if traded to a loser team that Ned’s the talent.  Hey, I’d love him too, but I’m practical.
