He's not running a 4.37 in 2024. He doesn't play fast. And that 40 time is 5/100ths of a second from Chase Claypool's 2020 40 time, 18/100ths faster than Justin Shorter's 2023 40 time, and 1/100th second faster than Tyrell Shavers' 2023 40 time. Hell-- Mack Hollins ran a 4.53 in 2019. Obviously, Shorter, and Shavers have an uphill battle to get onto the 53, and don't have a single regular season snap to show for themselves. But do you know what Claypool, and Hollins, (not to mention KJ Hamler, Andy Isabella, and Curtis Samuel) all have in common? They ALL have a higher completion percentage, and lower drop rate than Marquez Valdez-Scantling. And all with far worse quarterbacks throwing them the ball. Here's a link to his 2023 highlight reel. (Bear in mind-- this is a highlight reel, from a season in which he had a 50% completion percentage, and a 7% drop rate). In some of those catches, he's wide open in the end zone. But, there isn't a single reception in the open field (save for one where the safety trips over his own feet), where he isn't covered, and not one route where he is lined up on the boundary. I'm not even making an argument that he won't make the 53. Going into TC, I would put him just behind Hollins (for Hollins' ST play). He drops a lot of shorter stuff so that doesn’t excuse the drops, but the drops don’t affect the catch % that much. His catch % is low because of his depth of target. Just like QB completion % goes down the deeper the throw. Same thing. There shouldn’t be any concerns. He’s not signed to a contract that should concern anyone. While I have been vocally critical of the Bills' handling of the WR position this offseason, I think the MVS signing will pay dividends. I think he'll end up playing a bigger part -- and having more big plays -- than many are likely giving him credit for. If Claypool also happens to revive his career -- and all signs so far are good, albeit early in the offseason program -- then the addition of the two vets, Claypool and MVS, will go a long way toward giving this WR corps some depth and skillsets that it lacked. Despite a bad regular season last year he made crucial catches in the playoffs to help them again. So don't get your hopes up. He was a career 1.5+ yards per route run receiver from 2018 to 2022.............who just put up a pathetic .73 yprr in a horrendous 2023 season. MVS has been modestly better in the playoffs than the regular season in his career though. He goes from like 34 yards per game to 36. He's not "playoff Gabe" level with numbers that totally obliterate his regular season averages across the board or anything like that.
