McD’s defense is not clutch

It's all about the scheme.

We always play good against Lamar Jackson, because he's not the kind of QB that can take advantage of the holes in our zone system.  It's the same reason we always play terrible against Joe Burrow, because that's his bread and butter.  Quick, fast, underneath throws.

Patrick Mahomes struggled to play like this until about the mid-point of the season last year.  He's gotten a lot better at it since our last game.

At this point, it's pretty clear that McDermott doesn't have a curve ball.  Our defense is what it is.  The only way we beat teams like the Eagles is by Josh Allen playing totally out of his mind.  And even then, the defense probably chokes it away.

I agree completely.

McDermott's scheme works well against bad QB and dysfunctional offenses, but it's the lack of adjustments that is the real concern.

Complain about his scheme all you want, but it did in fact fluster Hurts. The issue is that after listening to his OC scream in his ear for 3 quarters about finding the soft zones, it was clear Hurts figured out the mission. Everyone without McDermott's ego could tell that they had that figured out. Logically you would think we would pivot into either a press man D or shake it up in any way, but we didn't. We sat back again. We left the flat open in OT. We essentially forced Hurts to beat us and he did.

It’s been the one consistent reoccurring theme under McDermott since the Houston playoff loss. Nice guy but he’s had his time and he continues to squander the opportunities over and over again. I see zero growth and learning from him. It’s time for someone else. Otherwise I fear we’re looking at Marvin Lewis/Marty Schottenheimer led teams. Heck even Philly moved on from Andy Reid when he couldn’t get them over the hump.

I'm arguing that the turnover was huge and contributed greatly to the loss. And a QB who has a penchant for TO's will have a lot of losses when the rest of the team isn't very good.

Allen was incredible on the road against the 9-1 super bowl favorites under the lights with the rain. Basically no one is playing better than how he played in that situation. Either you're just being difficult, have an axe to grind, or simply are not watching other NFL football. Every team except one or two would kill to have Allen, and the Eagles are possibly one of them.

He played a great game. The turnovers continue to hurt us.

the Chiefs played the Eagles very tough, Mahomes threw a horrific pick in the end zone and they ended up losing. That’s not a coincidence. TO’s are strongly correlated to losses.

The difference between Mahomes and Allen is how often they throw those costly INT’s.

It’s that simple.

The irony of you talking about things that are simple.

Josh Allen only had 1 INT this game.

Stop trying to protect McDermott.

I want our team to win and I want Allen to be the best QB he can be.

Yeah and it was a big one.

Let's go through a list!

2020 at Cardinals - Hail Murray

2021 at Titans - Josh slips for loss or kick FG and force OT?

2021 at Tampa, scores 17 in the 4th to force OT and collapsed in OT

2021 divisional vs KC - OT loss (13 seconds)

2022 at Dolphins - ran out of time to kick FG, bad clock management as usual

2022 at Vikings - OT loss - (4th and 18 JJ catch)

2023 at Jets - OT loss to Wilson

2023 Broncos - the 12th man

2023 at Philly - well, we all just saw that

3 of those painstakingly terrible losses (Hail Murray and 4th and 18) were killer. BUT! After those 3 games in the last 3 consecutive seasons, Bills came back and ran the table including after a bye after that cards game.

6-game win streak after Hail Murray 8! 2020

4-game win streak after OT collapse to Brady in 2021

6-game win streak after 4th and 18 in 2022.

Will we do the same this season?

Does the backs against the wall bring out our best regular season games?

McDERMOTT cost us the season,  his supporters need to stop. Too many examples of late game screwups.  Why is calling a timeout on that 4th down and long FG attempt.

He has tons of qualities and coached a great game for 3 quartes but then the Eagles adjusted.. .and he didn't have a response of his own, Just went soft coverage, with the occasional blitz.

The worst to me was giving a huge cushion on 3rd & 4 in OT. It was so obvious I'm sure tons of people saw it, and Hurst certainly did.

Poyer and Hyde have gone from awesome to good. There' not that bad at all, but far off from where they used to be. It sucks for them, sucks for us all. They are much slower but they still communicate well and there are little miscues overall nor big plays by opposing WRs. Their legs just don't follow their knowledge anymore. I don't agree with the "Superbowl window is closing" but that's what happens when you squander opportunities. Players go and some just get hit by Father Time.

He’s a choke artist. Please explain to me the point of having a defensive minded head coach whose defense never shows up against legitimate offenses? Injury narrative played out, we have three starting corners, two starting safeties, and way too much money tied up into a primarily healthy DL… and they give up 37 in the rain. Bye McDermott, give Brady the job.

THIS.

Yea, we “had” injuries.

Beane got McD Rasul Douglas and Linval Joseph mitigate the losses.

McDermott is simply a choke artist.

He turns into Brandon Staley when we play good teams.
