All-22 1st Half Analysis

I wanted to take a closer look at the 1st half & review the all-22 footage.  Comments/screen-shots below, just on specific plays & players that stood out:

Offense:

Cook/running game: few BIG opportunities that went by the wayside

  • Series 1: this is from our 40 on 1st down - looks like a big hole about to develop behind Morse/McGovern.  Cook dances a bit too much/indecisive & it gets shut down.  I think he cleans this up & it's a big gain

Capture1.thumb.JPG.fde66aad03dc96449f9c1bb4b9d94c57.JPG

  • next play - Torrence doesn't fire off the ball/DT blows him up OR this was set-up to be another HUGE gain on the ground (Dawkins pulling instead collides w/DT & Torrence, instead of kicking out the end)

Capture2.thumb.JPG.395f15c8b440cffc0c5f2979caede304.JPG

  • Series 2: at our 40, Cook gets the delay/outside draw.  Kincaid totally whiffs on his block (CB-Reid, who makes the tackle); otherwise this might be a HOUSE call.  For those calling out Cook for "not breaking tackles", he actually made a few guys miss in holes & would have had a huge 1st half on these last 2 plays alone

  • Under Center (no screen-shots): but under Center plays, had VERY good success.  I'm surprised Dorsey moved away from using these formations.  Either with Gilliam at FB, or 12 personnel.

  • 3rd & long (series 2): Josh hits Harris in the flat, watching live I thought he had a path to a 1st down if he stayed outside.  Looks to be the case, but could be deceiving.  I think he would have got it if he stayed there

Defense:

  • Bernard: looking back at 1st half all-22, I thought he did a VERY good job in pass coverage/passing off routes.  Dare I say more instinctive than Tremaine, albeit a limited sample, he seemed to jump the TE routes very quickly.  Below is 1 example on a screen with the TE leaking down the seam.  He also jumped Conklin (TE) on the play Aaron was injured & appeared to be staring down

Nice work man. How did you get the all 22? I log into nfl+ premium and then try to navigate and it leads me to a "subscribe now" page which then tells me I already have access, but doesn't give me any way to access the content. Completely broken website.

Went to NFL.com and clicked on the Bills game & replays (then hit all-22).  I've ran into your problem on my smartTV in the past, I have to log-out then re log-in.  Agree, their site is always having problems.

  • Josh: there has already been a TON of analysis/reaction to his play.  Goes without saying he was jittery in the pocket and missed some plays in the 1st half.  He had a 1st down/1-1 on his 3rd down INT to Harty; he missed Cook not only on the wheel route BUT also had a swing pass to him (when set in motion) with 3 blockers on 3 defenders.  It would have been a possible TD before the end of 1st half.  But he also made the unreal pass to Stefon.  It was an up & down 1st half
  • Under center: mentioned before, but Dorsey needs to get back to this more next time teams want to play their ends in a "wide 9" against our shotgun.  Moving under center shifted the Jets d-ends back to a 6/7 technique; and puts less pressure on the tackles (hence puts less pressure on G play having to block Quennin 1-1).  It's a copy/cat league, but few have the Jets personnel, will see this week how they adjust
  • Front 4 defense: I really liked what I saw on the all-22 from our starters (D Jones, Ed, Groot, Floyd).  This is our best dline in a while, it will be even more fun to watch when we get into bigger leads/Von returns
  • Secondary: not really tested 1-1 much, but kudos to Benford for chasing down Breece on his long run.  He ran right past Garret Wilson & it's this type of hustle/effort that likely has him as CB2 right now

Last comment, for now:

  • Motion: I felt like Dorsey did a great job moving Harty around in the 1st half - this put "horizontal" pressure on the Jets defense & slowed down the pressure; as well as got the LBs to open some holes in the middle of the field.  This was a Daboll "staple", hopefully something Dorsey does more often; as it can create easy looks across the middle OR short passes to the flat (easy 4-6 yard gains).

I feel your pain with the greyed out screen shots. I wish the NFL all-22 system didn’t darken the screen when it’s paused.

Not just that, but way back when A-22 used to break down plays, series, and drives. So I could at least get close to what I was looking for. Now I have to carve out more time to go through everything. Rewinding and rewatching suck.

Great thread. I haven’t had the time

to look at the tape myself yet. But I do weekly.

Two bullets I have some comments:

1. Josh has often gotten by on overlooking the easy play, first down, or even TD in favor of the splash play. I’ve noticed that often in my A22 reviews he gets a lot of credit for completing amazing passes but overall are should be be critical plays. The Diggs pass seems like a good example. A good result doesn’t equal a good decision.

2. Daboll mentioned forever ago that he doesn’t put Josh behind center because being in shotgun lets him process or see the defense better. I don’t mean to read too much into it, but given point one above I’ve long held onto it that seeing the field is something Josh has struggled with at times.

Just a thought… with all the gnashing about Josh and the team…. Could this just be a slow start due to lack of preseason playing time?

Anything is possible and many things likely contribute. While it's my opinion that it may have a slight factor in it, a big enough chunk of the offense has been in this system for years. They also had many many reps together at TC and some in the PS games to fine tune.

I've seen some people attribute it to lack of preseason play time and I've seen whole discussion (without looking up the stats myself) that the COVID year where there was no preseason was one of the  best starts for offense league wide. To that extent, our starting defense had just as few reps in the preseason and they looked solid for the majority of the snaps in the first game IMO.

This is the point that Allen decides to throw to Davis on that Int. It doesn't look like a bad read to me. He isn't really throwing into double coverage like people are crying about.  It just ends up that way due to route, time, and ball placement.  Sure he could throw to kincaid here who would get nailed by the time the ball got there by the same guy that is "double covering Davis."  He could also throw to Diggs, who Allen hasn't even looked at because he read Davis. Diggs would also be nailed by the time Josh looked his way and the ball got there.  Look at the space towards the sideline.  Thats a play that could have and should have happened IMO.  It just didn't.

I'll blame Allen for the Int here but I am not going to blame the decision.  He isn't "double covered."  A better route and ball and thats 15-20 easy yards.

This was the one INT that wasn't on Allen. Davis ran a lazy route and didn't give the Safety the slightest indication that he might break inside.

Not only did he not fake fake inside, then he rounds his out cut, both combined were the only reason the S had the time to undercut and make the pick.

In this league it is more about 1st downs versus TDs. Allen has to find ways to keep the drive going versus going for a kill shot.

Except he’s throwing a Smash concept into Cover 2. Corners are taught to play that too down essentially bracketing the Corner route Davis ran. He should have just taken the underneath to Kincaid.

Allen was 9/10 with 55 yards before he threw his first INT...took the check downs all first quarter. After that, the Jets just out-willed him with patience and he got agressive and spiraled. First drive looked good actually, minus a 1st down penalty. 2nd drive was fine and stunted with a botched play in what looked like a miscommunication in an RPO....crazy how fast Allen just goes from methodical to maniac.

Throughout the first quarter, the OL actually held up quite well against the pass rush. The JFM sack was Allen holding the ball too long on a ton of pump fakes, and the other 3rd down scramble was messy but he could have stood in and sorted through the junk if he wanted to.

idk what happened in the 2nd half. My wife made me turn off the tv 🤷

Yup. Josh has the arm to make that throw, but the way the game was going he should have just taken the first down. The biggest problem is his maturity right now. He needs to start playing QB. I’m not sure what he’s trying to prove right now

In fact, it's such a PITA that I abandoned my all-22 addiction.  I wrote NFL.com a Strongly Worded Letter explaining that they broke it and should fix it, but they never got back to me 😄

Dan Orlovsky on One Bills Live made the same point minus the names.  "There was no completion there".

In the second half he went from maniac to bumbling buffoon.

My initial take was that he looked like he had suddenly been possessed by JP Losman.

It was really, really bad.

Props to your wife's prescience...

Josh has the arm, and has "gotten away with" that throw at times but 1) at this point, there's enough film of Josh trying to hit Davis there, that the safety feels very confident to jump that route 2) Josh's technique has to be good, and the throw has to be accurate, meaning he needs a fraction of a second more than he was getting.

Agree with your first point.  This is something I've been saying since....2018...and reaching a crescendo the last couple years.

I think there may be more context to it than just 'being in shotgun lets Josh process or see the defense better'.  Daboll wasn't too interested in trying to run, and he at least initially loved his reverses and jet sweeps and motions, many of which work better from shotgun.   He was also trying to help Josh compensate for a poor OL and help Josh learn to make the reads.  But Josh should be "grown up" now, so if the IOL is more solid, it would help keep defenses off balance to spend more time under center.  I don't think Josh is having trouble seeing the defense or processing it.  I think he's having trouble mentally accepting that he should take the short throw and dink and dunk vs.  "make something happen"

Peyton Manning FWIW loved to operate from shotgun and struggled when Kubiak tried to put him under center.
