Morse is to the point where he’s so susceptible to concussions, that when it happens, we as fans don’t even recognize the cause. The knock to the head might look harmless or routine, but shortly after we hear “Morse has suffered a concussion and is out for the game.”
He’s a decent pass protector, but has always been average to below average in the run game. If he suffers another concussion this year you can assume it’ll be his last season in Buffalo.

My whole thing is that people have been saying this about Morse since we signed him, again preferring Matt Paradis for some reason, who had been an injured mess. I remember like it was yesterday. Morse’s  risk is no different really since he got here. They are very careful with him.

Morse has been fine and I think he plays out his contract. If he were concerned he would retire. If the Bills were concerned they would cut him and take the cap space. I’m not worried about Mitch.

Unless a blue chip offensive player falls to us or McBeane feels one is worth trading up for, the board should brace itself for another first round pick of a defensive player. My guess would be DT, but McD loves his MLBs, too.

I think if we trade for DeAndre Hopkins, Jack Campbell becomes the favorite for our 1st round pick. His fit with us makes too much sense. No one should complain if that happens. We'll have spent the entire free agency period up to that point upgrading the offense. We've signed zero defensive players.

Why Jack Campbell?? Because his measurables are similar to Edmunds? I'd take any LB who can anticipate and cover.

4th season Depth Signing...

SUPERBOWL!

lol I haven't even read the entire thread but I can all but guarantee there is someone in here talking about how amazing this move was and how underrated it was and how Beane is a master.

I like this signing.
Was hoping for it actually. Kromer connection adds to it.

But, I was expecting Bates to play the LG position and Connor the right with Ike as swing ?

 What does this mean now?
Let them all compete, or is there a prejudged thinking about which positions these guys will start ??

Thinking for me was McGovern was brought in to start at RG

Does it? I mean he can't play the role Edmunds played. They would have to change the defense to start Campbell as a rookie.

I think he is a high floor player. But I am not sure he is quite such an automatic fit here.

This is a good move. My favourite of the moves made so far.

As Edwards and Bates both have some experience at center,  is there a chance that Morse has had enough concussions and walks away?   He’s been dinged up a few times over the last couple of seasons.   I realize that Edwards had a concussion last season but don’t think he’s had multiple like Morse.  Now we’ve got two bigger, younger players to possibly step up.

There's a chance Morse gets concussed again and decides to hang up the cleats any time, but I hope not.  There's a big difference between "some experience at center" and a top C in the league, a level Morse played at last year.

Edwards didn't just have "a concussion", he had two concussions in 2 weeks, that put him on IR and then when they opened his 21 day window and tried to bring him back, he couldn't make it.  So he basically lost 3/4 of a season to 'a concussion', which is actually more worrisome to me than multiple concussions that were recovered from more rapidly.

I think Edwards would be binned as a "high risk, high reward" signing - if he stays healthy, you get a SB-team level OG, but he could get concussed again and go out for the season at any time.

So currently going into OTAs I see the OL like this.

LOCKS:

Dawkins

Bates

Morris

McGovern (or the other way around with Bates)

Brown

Edwards (Depth and competing for a LG/RG starting spot)

Currently the LT/RT Depth:

Doyle

Quessenberry

Boettger (starts season on PUP, unless injuries in camp gives him a chance)

Camp depth fighting for PS spots:

Mancz

Anderson

Van Demark

There is most definitely still room (and a need for OL) on a Day 1 or Day 2 pick.

My thoughts now are this:

If an OL is taken on Day 1 it's most likely an OT.

If an OL is taken on Day 2 to it could be an OT or G or C depending on their future plans.

If an OL is taken on Day 3 or never, I will be disappointed.

Say more about Campbell and the differences you see between Edmunds and Campbell in how the defense would function.

I know he's slower (a 4.6 guy) but the OBL crew and Maddy Glab were discussing him and described him as very cerebral, very fast to process, and solid in coverage.

Especially his first two years here, and somewhat his third year, the knock on Edmunds seemed to be that he had incredible athleticism and the reach of a pteryactyl, but struggled to figure out how to apply them.

-Why do you think Boettger would start the season on PUP?  He was healthy enough to be active and take snaps in one game; he was also healthy enough to be re-signed to a 1 yr deal.  Remember PUP is ONLY for players who are not physically able to take a single rep in training camp.  Once they do, they become ineligible for PUP.

-Why do you think the team would rely on Doyle as LT/RT depth, when he is rehabbing from an ACL tear that was probably operated on in mid-Oct, and may well start TC on PUP?

I don't care if an OL is taken on Day 3, but if that's the only OL taken, I'll share your disappointment.

I'm preparing for disappointment though

I agree with you, I don't think they take an OG in the 1st round on Day 1.

People gotta be more original……posting “Super Bowl” after every signing ran its course back in the early 2000’s of the message boards!

Backup OC might be a bigger draft need than backup OG now.

Well, both Bates and McGovern have played center before. Possibly an heir apparent for Morse/future starter but I don't think we need backup depth at center.

Appears to be a good signing,

Don't worry... it's early. The vultures will smell this soon enough.

He's a character/personality fit. He fills a need. He's been training with Luke Keuchly. That's why I think he would be our target in the 1st round.

At this point we're not likely to find a like for like Edmunds replacement. So they'll have to modify the scheme to account for a MLB with less sideline to sideline range no matter what. Beane is dragging his feet, almost like he already knows he can find a MLB in the draft.

Well "fast to process" is one immediate difference to Edmunds. Haha.

Edmunds is what I consider a latetal linebacker. He is at his best going sideline to sideline. Campbell is a vertical linebacker. He is at his best attacking the line of scrimmage. He is more like a younger, more athletic AJ Klein to me.

1st:  Because Ike is always on PUP/IR.  LOL.  If he isn't he will battle only as depth.

2nd:  All true about Doyle, and Quiz is not an answer.  Thus, my opinion that an OT will most likely be taken in Day 1 or 2.

Hope you're right!

Why was he still available on such a short deal?

As stated upthread, he had concussion issues that cost him most of last season. Maybe some teams are wary.

If he returns to prior form, it's a solid signing.

I would say that if he had to sign cheaper, why not with an OL coach you like and a SB contender?
