McCarthy Notches Biggest Win Since Getting the Speaker's Gavel

by Joe Cunningham

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has gotten a debt limit bill through the House, ending weeks of speculation from detractors and putting the ball squarely in Joe Biden’s court. What’s more, the fact that McCarthy has suddenly received an outpouring of support from Republicans in the Senate – including moderate ones – shows the GOP is ready to start fighting back.

{snip}

I mentioned previously just how vital Senate Republican support is, and specifically that support from the moderate wing of the caucus. With folks like Todd Young, Susan Collins, and Mitt Romney lending their vocal support, as well as Mitch McConnell publicly calling on Biden to come to the table to negotiate with McCarthy, it’s clear Biden will have little choice in the matter but to go sit down.

And therein lies the problem for Biden. Because the Democrats have no plan and were never interested in negotiating, they called McCarthy’s bluff, and he responded with a bill. Now the House has the upper hand, which infuriates the Democrats. And it also frightens them.

See, Biden comes from an era of politician that still believes “We have to do something” means “We have to do something.” Politicians today say “We have to do something” but have no real plan to accomplish much of anything other than try to make the other party look bad. But Biden will be forced to go to the negotiating table, and he’ll come away with a compromise, which is exactly what Democrats don’t want.

If the Republicans can be negotiated with, it means they aren’t the rabid extremists the Democrats have painted them as. And the Democrats know Biden’s desire to “do something” will lead him to negotiate. That is unacceptable to them because they don’t want to get in the habit of tying the debt ceiling to budget cuts. That would be disastrous for their fiscal philosophy (inasmuch as they are considered to have one).

Chuck Schumer has never met a spending bill he didn’t like.

So while laughable, it’s not surprising that he’s trying to decry the GOP and their call for fiscal responsibility.

To clarify, trying to slam on the brakes before you slide us over a fiscal cliff at warp speed, that’s holding America, hostage?

So you're A-OK with default.

At least you're honest about that.

Mis-titled Budget Thread :

White House Caves: Joe Biden Asks Kevin McCarthy to Negotiate Debt Limit

by Wendell Husebø

President Joe Biden on Monday finally requested that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) negotiate the debt limit during a meeting to be held on May 9 to avoid default, a move that contradicted the White House’s previous official position.

While traveling in Israel, McCarthy received a call from Biden to schedule a meeting to negotiate raising the debt limit after days of stonewalling tactics, Punchbowl News reported. “We are not negotiating on this,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday. “We’ve been very clear on this.”

“They [House Republicans] need to do their job. Congress must act,” she said. “It is their constitutional duty.”

The White House’s stonewalling position remained consistent through Monday afternoon. About one hour after the White House press briefing, Biden called McCarthy.

As Biden and McCarthy prepare to negotiate, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-CA) has announced hearings on the House bill as a public relations attempt to condemn it. Schumer has refused to enact his own legislation or hold a vote on the House’s bill.

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/20/biden-mccarthy-debt-ceiling-00078853But Biden’s remarks set off a back-and-forth later in the day that underscored the deep divide between the White House and House Republicans over how to approach the debt ceiling discussions.

McCarthy tweeted shortly afterward that he would accept a request to meet “and discuss a responsible debt ceiling increase to address irresponsible government spending.”

The White House responded in a statement issued later on Friday, where Jean-Pierre reiterated that “raising the debt ceiling is not a negotiation; it is an obligation of this country and its leaders to avoid economic chaos.”

“We are going to have a clear debate on two different visions for the country — one that cuts Social Security, and one that protects it — and the President is happy to discuss that with the Speaker,” Jean-Pierre said.

The development comes a day after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the U.S. had reached its debt limit and would need to use special measures to avoid a default. Yellen has projected that Congress has until at least June to pass a debt ceiling increase.

Question - Please only give a answer not another question !!

Do you think that the spending of our gov't needs to be at the very least slowed down or should they just continue as they have in the recent past & just continue to increase the debt ceiling over & over again ?

The proper place to address spending is in the federal budget not the debt ceiling.

I think the government managed by both major parties will keep borrowing and spending as much money as they can until there's a debt crisis which results in a default either 1) outright bankruptcy or through 2) inflating the debt away.  Currently, they're operating under option 2.  Its all supported by an international system of finance centered on the use of the US dollar.  With lots of countries moving away from holding dollar reserves and using it in trade settlement the ability to run these deficits will disappear.  That's happening at a pretty fast pace.

Here's a link to some interesting data on deficits and debt.

They all do it & have been doing it & will continue to do it you DA but someone needs to start somewhere instead of just continuing down the same path but you would rather say OMG THEY ARE TAKING MONEY AWAY FROM THIS THAT & THE OTHER THING ! LOOK THEY ARE SUCH BAD PEOPLE - THEY SUCK - IT'S TRUMPS FAULT !!

Instead of seeing the problem for what it is and coming to the table and responsibly coming up with a logical proposal to the problem ALL OF THEM BOTH SIDES - oh sorry i forgot this is Joe he just does things with out putting a plan in place first sorry what was i thinking ?

And of course if they were of a responsible nature and came to the table to discuss proposals then they couldn't continue to make all of the multi TRILLION dollar bills to put out so let's just not do anything so the spending can continue .

If you make a mistake & learn something from it & make changes moving forward then it wasn't a waste of time but if you make a mistake learn nothing & continue to do the same thing over & over again then your wasting every ones time & are like a dog chasing it's tail .

But politicians do that the best ...

lastly who read the bill? Anyone???

This draconian budget they PASSED is return to 2022 spending, return unspent allocated covid dollars and limit increases annually to 1%.  That’s an absurd amount of money and their stated negotiating starting point?

What? No, seriously. What is she even talking about?

Does she hear herself? She makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever.

“We can’t cut unsustainable spending because then we won’t be able to afford to spend even more money we don’t have in the future!”

That’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.

The analogy is dishonest and ridiculous for multiple reasons.

BUDGET / DEBT LIMIT THREAD :

Leftist strategy: hostage taking

One of the more successful strategies, at least historically, of Leftists who want to defend ridiculous policies is called “hostage taking.”

The practice is pretty simple: tie two unrelated things together–one that the public generally likes or approves of, and another that is objectionable–and make it difficult to separate the two. If you want one, you have to have both.

That’s why during government “shutdowns” (which really are more like “government diets”) all the things people like about government get closed. Museums, parks, the Washington Monument…

Here in Minnesota, we had a showdown between the legislature and the governor a few years back and the budget deadline passed. The Democrat governor made sure to close rest stops on highways, which are generally unstaffed, claiming that it was a safety hazard to have them open.

They literally blocked entrances.

Of course, it is a safety hazard to have them closed, especially as truckers need to use them for mandatory rest periods. Not to mention the need for restrooms.

People volunteered to clean them and provide safety (whatever that means) and the governor refused. He did it to pressure the legislature; truckers tend to be Republicans and the Democrats took them hostage.

Another example is Joy Reid’s piece here.

Oklahoma’s governor is defunding Public TV for obvious reasons, and Reid is claiming children as hostages.

Public television hasn't been a critical piece of any state's emergency alert system in 20 years. Every living, breathing person in this country has a mobile phone and/or cable television which would provide critical alerts.

All these arguments about how nothing can be cut remind me of my crazy sister-in-law when confronted by the fact she could no longer afford to live her previous lifestyle refused to acknowledge the reality she couldn't keep spending like a drunken sailor on shore leave.  In the case of the US debt the government is the crazy sister-in-law.  But that's the premise behind never ending debt and deficit accumulation.  We can't cut anything because somebody will suffer but heaven forbid Americans that comprise 5% of the world's population but consume 25% of its output, and have the highest debt levels in the world should ever be forced to live within their means.  Be sure soon enough it will happen but when it does it won't be voluntary or painless.

Exactly. They passed a reduction in the total spend not how. The hand wringing over VA benefits was the opponents and media tying the reduction to something loud emotional and painful for maximum outrage- playing the proletariate like a fiddle.

Sure it’s BS for them to do that and then take defense cuts off of the table but they’ve got their friends to placate too

For those of you outside of business that’s a pretty standard operating procedure.  “We are cutting  this years budgets by 10%… you go figure out how.”

certainly plausible as they are a component of the discretionary budget, but it’s disingenuous to suggest that was explicit in the budget passed. That’s a lie, intentionally so.

VA expects the cuts will be across the board, evenly, and then further assumes defense won't get any of it. Their second assumption might be reasonable. Their first assumption probably isn't. IMO anyways

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3992673-14th-amendment-emerges-as-last-ditch-fix-to-ward-off-default/

That's a weak Constitutional argument and likely any Federal court, specifically the Supreme Court would rule against the administration.  If that's their best play call at this point in the game they're in big trouble.  The 14th Amendment, Section 4 references the validity of the debt but nothing about issuing debt or any power of the executive branch.  Section 5 states "The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.  But the White House doesn't see the need to negotiate with Congress even through the "out" they cite stipulates the power of the Article rests with Congress.  The power to issue debt rests with Congress under Article One, section 8 of the Constitution.  "To borrow money on the credit of the United States".

BUDGET / DEBT LIMIT THREAD:

OOPS !

VOTERS ARE WITH MCCARTHY ON THE DEBT LIMIT

Tomorrow, Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with Kevin McCarthy and other Congressional leaders to discuss the debt ceiling plan that has passed the House of Representatives. On the eve of that meeting, Rasmussen polled public sentiment on the debt ceiling. These are the key questions that Rasmussen asked:

Quote

2* Republicans in the House of Representatives have passed a plan that would raise the debt ceiling and also limit government programs in an effort to reduce deficit spending in the future. Based on what you know about the Republican debt ceiling plan, do you support or oppose it?

Quote

3* President Joe Biden has agreed to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to negotiate a deal for raising the debt ceiling. Who should compromise more to reach such a deal, President Biden or Speaker McCarthy? Or should both Biden and McCarthy compromise equally?

Most voters are with the GOP:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. voters support the debt ceiling bill passed by Republicans in the House of Representatives, including 32% who Strongly Support it. Thirty-four percent (34%) oppose the GOP plan, including 21% who Strongly Oppose it.

57% to 34% is a pretty overwhelming majority.

So Kevin McCarthy has his marching orders, not just from House Republicans, but from the American people. Let’s hope he stands tough for what passes today for fiscal responsibility.

The Democrats’ Debt Ceiling Position Makes Zero Sense

BY: DAVID HARSANYI

If you want to spend without any limit in perpetuity, just say so.

FTA:

Until this week, Democrats wouldn’t even talk to Republicans on the matter.

In the old days, this kind of absolutist position would have every newspaper wringing its hands about GOP “obstructionism” and the dysfunction of the political system.

Today, outlets like The New York Times simply pretend Republican bills are apparitions. “Are Republicans Willing to Raise the Debt Ceiling?” asks the editorial board this week.

Does the Times not know that the GOP has already agreed to lift the ceiling? They do. They pretend it isn’t real because it includes “deep cuts in federal spending” (by which they mean a return to last year’s discretionary spending levels, with no cuts moving forward)
