I'll correct you if you really want to :)

Bolded is wrong. It is actually only $1.72M - $895k for Dane Jackson and $825 for Marquez Stevenson. Stevenson's signing bonus $43k counts for cap. Completely irrelevant though :)

I also add that Sportrac still has Star's dead money at $5.2M, so they clearly think its post 1 June cut and there will be another $2.6M dead cap in 2023.

OK, so

Bills cap space after this deal recorded on Spotrac:  $2.56M

Not included: Lawson, Barkley

Additional cap from pushing lowest deals off top-51:$1.72M

Available cap to sign Lawson and Barkley:                 $4.28M

I don't understand the Star figures at all.

I think!

Feel certain someone will correct me if I'm wrong

Marquez Stevenson is the next to get pushed off the 51 but his yearly signing bonus of $43,136 stays on the Top 51 total.

Barkley is going to be around vet minimum so that leaves plenty for Shaq which I think will be around $2.5M.

Josh can go "down" for 4-5 games and solid backup can make a huge difference then.

Or the nightmare - josh gets a mild concussion late in a playoff game. A guy that can string a couple drives together without a boneheaded mistake sure is nice.

I've even wondered if Barkley would get a VSB contract with part of his salary guaranteed and the max bonus.

Similar to Greg Mancz - salary of $1.12M with $0.2M guaranteed; $152,500 signing bonus for a total compensation of $1.273M which I estimate as roughly twice what I guesstimate Barkley made between practice squads and weeks on the 53 man roster last year, and roughly half what he made last year guaranteed.

Cap charge to the Bills of $1,047,500, which is vet minimum plus the bonus - while that's not a lot of savings per contract, over 6 players it frees up money to sign more guys.

So WOW.  Barkley did get a VSB contract, but for only a $25k bonus and $100k guaranteed of his salary.  Total compensation to Barkley $1.145M, total cap charge to the Bills $0.920M

I am looking at this and Shaq Lawson's contract (also a VSB deal) and going WHAT DID I JUST READ?

We had $2.56M in cap, we just signed two vets, now we have $2.3M cap

SMDH

Wonder what the Bares offered Bates.

They really must have wanted to come back pretty badly :)

My theory that difference in this number and number showed by Sportrac (2.3M) is Jordan Phillips contract. Sportrac shows 3.5M cap hit but misses contract details and there is something different at overthecap, so I think there is actually a void year and his 2022 cap hit is lower. So I tend to believe we have actually 2.9M but lower cap space next year.

JUST IGNORE SPORTRAC During this part of the season. It’s basically meaningless. We will be signing draft picks and another corner which means more restructures are coming so it means nothing.

This makes zero sense. Just because things can and will change it doesn't mean that current data mean nothing. We know exacty how much draft picks cost so we can calculate that. If we sign another corner and make one more restructure how does it make all current data irrelevant?

Now we see why Lawson was more reluctant to sign a contract than Phillips :)

If Bates leaves, I wonder if they'll focus their (currently) available cap $$ on signing a vet CB?  They'd have $3.5-4 mil...?

In fairness Beane said his assessment was based on including a few things that were not yet in the public domain. Who knows how many of those 5 were included.

I thought Beane said "we might sign a few guys at for minimum contracts" or something of the sort.

We just had no idea all these reported signings fell into that bucket, including Shaq

Ha!  I think he signed it, it just took a long time for the NFL to process it.

I could be wrong but at a hunch, all the reported/visualized signings that took a long time to make it to Spotrac may have incentives that had to be reviewed by the NFL to confirm if they were correctly classed as "unlikely to be earned" and therefore don't count against the cap.

As for the contract size, when a guy has been traded for a pick/player swap (6th for 7th) after 1 year of big contract, then traded again for a 6th to his 3rd team in 3 years,  then released from that team before the end of the season, he has to know that his value is falling fast.  The contract is consistent with his current value.  He may not make the team.
