The Trevor Lawrence Situation

I seen a clip somewhere of a new interesting way to settle the #1 pick and tanking debate. The guy says forget the pro bowl nobody watch’s or cares especially one week before the super bowl. Why not take the 2 worst teams and let them play for the right to draft number 1. I wish I could find the clip. I like the idea personally. I think it would get huge ratings!

Even if he wanted to sit and avoid the jets or jags, he’s still going to go to a bad team regardless of when he enters the draft. Choose your 2-14 destiny.

to be fair ..2022 likely different teams. Pats coukd tank.

I think Jags are better than their record. They had QBs injury issues. If new gm does drastic personnel change like a defense flip then they can be bad next year.  This season they actually lost something like 7 games by one score.

early possibke teams picking top 5 in 2022...

Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New England, Houston

Edit:  Also, just the notion that there's a massively high stakes tournament where ONLY the winner makes any money.  Even for the best poker players in the world that's just lighting money on fire.

Its called a freeze-out tournament.  They were super common during online poker days.  Since you could play several per day and develop actual skill at that format.  Most common as 1 table tournaments or small number of entrants.

I got into the game after the online game died for us poor Americans.  Isn't a freezeout just any tournament with no rebuys or add-ons regardless of pay structure though?

One word, or five depending on how you look at it, NFLPA. No way they agree to that. Id love to see that too though.

As to Trevor staying in school, i think his people should

1)  have him list teams he would actually like to play for, out of all 32, and rank them

2)  guesstimate the odds that any of them would finish last next year AND would draft a qb #1

3)  guesstimate the odds that any of them would be bad enuf to be able to trade up to #1, and that the projected #! would already have a qb (Philly?  Chicago-ish?  Jets if Darnold looks decent next year)

4)  keep my ear out for whether the salary cap will be reduced AND whether that would affect the rookie wage scale.  But still, he's gonna make $300MM plus during his career and he shouldnt really worry about a couple mil lost in the first couple years.

I think he should come out this year.

And, I think he is coming out this year, and has decided that weeks ago.

I like it.  Gives teams an ability to get healthier by having it pro bowl weekend.   Pay the players the same as they make wildcard weekend.  Pro bowl players do the saturdqy night skills thing.  Put big money on the line and the elites will show.  Like college, a Bowl game feel.  Every crap team has a handful of good players.  Highlights them.  Interim coaches actually coaching for the future.

A lottery might make sense for the NFL.  Perhaps the bottom 3 teams would have their draft order determined by a lottery.  Teams might tank a little bit to get into the bottom 3, but they would be less likely to do so if their odds of getting the top pick were 1 in 3 or less (less if they weighted the odds more for the worse records like the NHL does).  The NHL lottery has too many teams.  I think the NBA's (with which I'm not that familiar) works a little better?
