The ABC in Virginia often grants a 20% coupon for drinky holidays, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the like. Normally it's ~115 and that will do the trick. If you catch it on monthly sale for say 100-105 and then hit it with the coupon code, it's a score. That's how I snagged the Signet, it was a monthly special for 199, and 20% off made it 159. Tend towards the sherried for regular use - Glenlivet or Lasanta. Found the Doublewood (and Balvenie in general) overrated and overpriced. Highland Park was great before they changed it. Talisker and Talisker Storm are in the rotation but Ardbeg is just too much. Laddie (Bruichladdich) is just too young and rough. Dalwhinnie is sort of a blank canvas. Also on deck but untapped (so no opinion yet) are Oban, Lagavulin. Fan of the killer B's - Booker's, Baker's, Blanton's. Jefferson Reserve is good stuff except for that awful Ocean. Buffalo Trace, always have a couple bottles on hand, or Eagle Rare. EH Taylor is another from BT Distillery, used to be able to grab a tall boy for ~50, it's gone crazy. Angel's Envy is wonderful but their rye is orgasmic (also has gone crazy, used to be 70). IDK, I liked the bottle of Laddie i went through. Drank it neat and didn't find it rough at all. Ocean's vary drastically between voyages. Some are excellent, some are pretty meh for sure. Buffalo Trace is the most overrated cheaper bourbon. I cannot fathom how it is hard to find, even allocated in some areas. Eagle Rare is way better for the price point. Of course, some are charging over $50 for it now though. I can still find EH for $45 SmB and $70 SiB. I'm a buyer of the single for $70 all day long. The Rye is tremendous too and readily available right now for $70-80. AE Rye is on my shortlist, but you are right, the price seems a bit much at the moment. I just take smaller sips. 80 proof is pretty weak for whiskey and lacks the flavor of the stronger proofs IMO. I find the sweet spot to be the bottle-in-bond 100 proofs. The spelling doesn't necessary tell you if it's Scotch or Canadian or Bourbon, as they are simply different spellings of the same word. But I'm a bourbon guy. Similar price point. Haven't got into the Distillers addition yet. The oldest I've had was a 21 Glenfiddich. My palate at the time couldn't really notice the difference from the 18 year old. For the prices I'd rather have 2 18 years old bottles than 1 21. It is one of the best value/quality combos in the world of scotch IMO. The more expensive 15 is a let down. The even more expensive 18 is outstanding, but quite a bit more. I got this from my father in law for my birthday and I'm surprised how much I like it because there's actually a good amount of the band-aid character I associate with Lagavulin, but just a little lighter.
