Titans beat Patriots 14 -13 because of the D

Interestingly, in Week 16 the Bills lost to the Patriots in a game for the Division. Allen and the offense gave the lead to the defense in the third quarter. The defense promptly allowed Brady to march down the field and score. The defense gives up 24 and given a pass for their performance. Allen is blamed for only scoring 17.

March forward 2 weeks. After a disastrous game against the Dolphins (which would have given the Division to the Bills had they beat the Pats and Jets) the Titans march into Gillette and beat the Pats 14 - 13. The Pats were up 13 - 7 in the second half. The Titans scored a TD in the 3rd giving their defense the lead at 14 - 13. The Titans defense however held onto that lead for over a quarter to win. Tannehill gets the win and is praised for managing the game scoring 13 and the Titans win. The Bills lose to the same Pats 24 - 17 at Gillette when the defense couldn't hold the lead in the third and gives up 11 more points than the Titans to Brady. Allen takes the loss and the criticism that goes with not scoring 25. Perspective?????  Anyone?????

Perspective, you ask for.  OK.

1) Football is a team game.  That's why all the talk about "we lost for one reason - Allen (or Daboll, or the offense)" is Bull Crap.  It's a team game.  Both the O and the D need to do "enough".  What "enough" is, varies from week to week.  But yes, there have been several games where our O has gotten the lead and our D has been unable to keep it.

2) If Allen ever put up only 71 passing yards against any team, including the #2 passing D in the league (Pats) or the #3 passing D in the league (Stillers), tar would be boiling and pitchforks sharpened here.

3) Our D has some weaknesses sometimes and we appear to be unable to make successful in-game adjustments at times

4) The Titans won on the strength of their run game and Derrick Henry.  201 rush yards.  Over and over again, we see games where we appear to be running successfully with Singletary and we seem to move away from it instead of doubling down.  Its a mystery shrouded in an enigma.

Yet your point has nothing to do with the topic.

Sure it does.  If you took the time to look at it objectively and not from your still hurt feelings.

The Bills who averaged 17 ppg DOUBLED their output against the D you are trying to brag on

Not good enough ....   which cliche shall I use?

Match ups matter

Some players have better to great games even what they have been playing like garbage.

Brady had hes best statistical performance in 6 weeks.

Why? because the Bills D suddenly sucked or Tom got a bit lucky?

Of course.  If you have 71 yds passing, you need to get your 14 points from SOMEWHERE.

But to the OP, the germane point is my 1).  It's ridiculous to say "we lost that game because our offense sucked" or whatever.  We need all aspects of the game to step up and Do Their Job.

That said, if Tom Brady didn't throw a pick-6 and made just a few more plays, 14 points wouldn't have done it for the Titans, either.

Well spoken. It is a team game and when analysts, fans, and others choose to criticize a player, a play, a score, a result without being fair in their criticism then they should be open for criticism themselves. Ex: There was a lot of criticism on Allen's second half and not much praise for his first half. A lot of criticism for his what some called "reckless"  attempted lateral to Knox. The skill to run for the first down and more is overlooked in favor of the criticism of his calculated (reckless) decision. Did I cringe? Yes. It was a lateral toward the sidelines. It was 1 of the 81 plays he ran, not 25 of the 81. He saw Knox coming. He saw a chance to make a spectacular play. Knox had no idea it was coming however but had the sense to mitigate the play. We did not lose possession. Had the lateral worked and Knox likely scored the talk about recklessness would have turned to heroic. But many's desire is to forget the first part of the play in order to criticize the second part of the play. Sometimes we want him to play hero ball BUT only if it works and are quick to criticize if it doesn't. Sometimes people want to project bad stats like potential INTs although they didn't happen (for lots of reasons) and not project the whatifs if there wasn't the penalty, the dropped pass, the missed block, etc. I prefer fairness and perspective.

Give the Nashville punter some credit for that. The drive starts were consistently on a long field. Not so much with our punter. I hope that improves next year.

He was all-pro for a reason.  His regular season stats were also really really good.

Underrated part of a defense first team - and one that after saturday McBeane will definitely be looking to upgrade.

We have a very high level defense. And they need a few more player makers to be elite enough to win a Super Bowl.

A 2nd shut down CB, and elite Edge Rusher to take over for Jerry Hughes and a run stuffing OLB to take over for Lorenzo.

It’s simple really. It IS a team game. The offense scores what they are able vs the Pats defense. Whatever that number is, it dictates the job required of the defense. This number will vary from game to game. The defense is then charged with stopping the Pats offense enough times to keep them below that number. The Titans defense accomplished this, the Bills did not. When the Bills needed a stop, they couldn’t get it. The Titans offense was clinging to a one point lead. However , they managed the clock well and left the Pats* with minimal time. It was enough time to get into FG range ( barely ) but only with a couple of big passing plays. They ended  any chance with an INT for a TD. NFL games are different every week and matchups change from team to team, but the concept remains the same. The offense can speed up or slow down to vary tempo, keep matchups on the field and burn clock. They can nurse  a big lead or rally for a quick score; they dictate the tempo. The defense can not do this. Their only job is to stop the opponent. So credit the Titans defense. They only had a 13 point margin of error all game to achieve victory, and they accomplished their mission. For all the accolades given to the Bills defense this season, they absolutely failed in their biggest tests vs New England and Houston.

And if the defense ONLY did as well as they did against that same team. The Bills would likely had a FG attempt to tie the game not lose it. Your own argument proves my point.

Buffalo scored 30 points TWICE against Miami.

I'll hang up and listen

And Miami lead by the Amish Bearded One beat the P*ts.  It was the start of their slide downhill.

There is not a high standard for tar and pitchforks here.  I think there would be tar and pitchforks if a player got a jaywalking ticket.

The Cleveland game was a good example. If we put up more offensive points we win. However the offense left the field with the lead giving our defense a chance to close it out. Furthermore if Haush makes a couple kicks then it doesn’t even matter.

I think that’s why Coach preaches every one of eleven having to do their job. If one fails then probably the play fails or someone has to pick up the slack.

I'll say this. NE and Buffalo are two of the NFL's 3 best defenses and both are going home after the 1st round of the playoffs. A great D is nice, but if you can't score points it doesn't matter.
