Paul Costa Posted January 6, 2020 Share Posted January 6, 2020 Jordan Poyer signed with the Buffalo Bills because they offered him the best contract at the time. He has played much better than expected. I personally love him on our team. But the Bills don’t owe him anything. He got paid. He should make more in his next contract and I hope it’s in Buffalo. He is a great fit for our system. Brandon Beane will decide how much we can give him in two years. Keep in mind, the team has Jaquan Johnson at safety and he has looked very good. After 2020 when Poyer is a FA, Johnson will be in his third year and likely pushing for a starting role. I appreciate what Poyer brings to the table but if we're being honest McD has had great defenses with no name safeties before, it's not an essential position in this scheme. Poyer functions well within this defense but the standalone pieces in the secondary are White and Hyde, the rest are interchangeable and can be replaced imo. It is the relationship with Hyde more than purely Poyer's skillset I think. The disguising of coverages is critical to the Bills defense. They are relatively simple up front and complex on the back end. Yes Hyde could build that relationship with another player but the chemistry he and Poyer have is rare and special. They have an almost innate understanding.
