McDermott on no trades: "There have been too many years of irresponsible decision-making, let's just put it that way."

do you believe we are more talented now than in 2015?

This is certainly a fair question.

I believe we are better situated at QB and on both lines. I also think that the 2020 draft is chock full of wide receivers which I continue to think is a glaring need. I think that the Bills are well situated to make the playoffs this season and a MAJOR move in 2020. And I am glad that Whaley is not there to squander our best resources.

Wasn't the question specifically about trade deadline trades?  The only trade deadline ***** I can think of is for Benjamin I guess.  Although he did score a TD in the Snow Bowl which if he hadn't we probably lose and miss the playoffs again.

So  I'm not sure where he's coming from.

Yes the question was about the trades (or lack of). The answer was more complex and not just about deadline trades. The link to the audio is in the thread somewhere

A lot of that is hindsight.  He went all in for his qb and tried to give him the pieces to succeed.  Sammy was one of the best college receivers in modern history.  Our receivers were Watkins, Woods, Hogan, and Goodwin. I would kill for that collection right now.

and nfl hiring is a joke. It’s basically who’s your dad (Andy Reid’s former drug addict son is a d line coach and the Ryans ) or who you are buddies with (Daboll is friends with Polian’s son).  He is in the xfl right now.  He clearly had his faults but to act like a guy who averaged 8 wins for a Bills franchise that has been morbid for 20 years is kinda dishonest,

Linebacker, safety, CB, OL yes. DL, WR, HB, no. QB is push or a little better this year.

I just watched the entire presser. This was an answer to a second question about the trade deadline.  Coach used the word responsible about 7 times in the two answers before he talked about irresponsible behavior of the past.

A couple of things:

1) There was definitely no shade toward Beane.  Went out of his way to say he and Beane talked about the deadline the last couple of weeks and implied there is a shared vision of short and long term thinking.

2) I honestly think this is more about cap management than specific personnel.  Teams take chances on players all the time...that they can unlock talent, etc.  I think its more about being conservative...etc.

If someone a little less even-keeled or megalomaniacal said this (Rex? Gregg Williams?), I'd be concerned, but consider the source. Say what you will about McDermott's coaching ability, but he is nothing if not respectful and even-keeled.

Ok but it definitely sounds defensive.  And some of those moves presumably were signed off on by his boss Terry.  McD hasn't won anything yet - ANYTHING.  He really should keep those thoughts to himself.

McD needs to realize “Dareus and his massive contract!” is an excuse that doesn’t fly for 4 years.

I mean considering that the run defense still hasn't recovered from that trade, and he's a defensive specialist... he should really shut his pie hole.

One wonders how close to a mirror he and the Beaner were standing when he said that

Looked at from the lens of the question - trade deadline inactivity - and that reports are any difference makers out there were demanding 1st and 2nd round picks - and salary dumps available - I took it as they don’t plan to give up day 1 picks or acquire bad contracts/mortgage the future (so to speak) as part of their plan. Just my view. I also think he may have been throwing that KB deal in to his answer, which was them.
