2018 Post Mortem

The 20 game 2019 pre-season is over for competitive purposes.  Nothing can change what we have learned this year.

  1. The Bills have a young franchise QB to build around
  2. Other than Josh Allen there are no important players on the offensive side of the Ball
  3. The defense has several young players to build around
  4. Coaching is questionable at all senior positions HC, OC, DC and especially special teams.

I will watch the games. I expect to enjoy watching Allen's athletic gifts.   I will pray no one is hurt.  But they are as meaningless as it gets.

Well that’s an extremely negative outlook.

There are are a few things we learned this year - a season that granted, was not expected to be a playoff year.

Here is the good:

- Josh Allen is far from a finished product, but

he fared much better than some of the Twitter draft pundits anticipated.  It certainly seems that he’s a QB worth building around.

- Zay Jones showed some good flashes this year, thought still a bit inconsistent.  He’s probably not good enough yet to be a #2, but could be a solid contributor as a slot WR.

- Robert Foster and Isiah McKenzie are young WR’s worth keeping around.  Again, we aren’t talking about a #1, maybe not a #2 even, but fast players who can contribute.

- Matt Milano showed he’s a LB worth retaining.  As long as his rehab goes well, the Bills have a solid starter LB for years to come.

- Shaq Lawson proved he is a capable rotational DE.  Maybe not worthy of a 1st round pick from far from the bust many of us thought.

- Secondary again is the strength of the team.  Poyer, White and Hyde has great years.   But the Bills look to be adding solid depth with Wallace, Bush, and Johnson.

- Wyatt Teller may be good enough to earn a starting spot next season.  It’s been a season of high’s and low’s for him.

- Lorenzo Alexander is amazing.  He seemed to excel this year and he’s worth a new contract at the end of the year.

The Bad:

- McCoy appears to have lost a step.  Add RB to many of the offensive needs.

- Offensive line is absolutely dreadful.  The Bills will need to fill 3 or maybe 4 spots.  The best OL member Dion Dawkins has had a very average year at LT.

- The Bills still lack great pass rusher.  They have many good players like Hughes and Murphy but lack someone that can truly change a game.

- Tremaine Edmunds has has a year of ups and downs.  His play will need to continue to improve.

- There’s a huge hole on the OL and at WR.  The Bills will need (at least) 2 quality WR’s.

- TE is an absolute joke.  Jason Croom can be an ok TE for some pass packages but is not consistent enough.  Charles Clay is a goner

I see all the LAMP replies, but there is a key point here, and it's the bolded one. There is literally no one else who would count as part of a core to build around.

top 5 defense , with the highest paid player being Star, only making 10 mil per and 5 starting 1st or 2nd year players on the back 7 , I'd  say the GM, HC and DC are doing just fine!

This gives us the flexibility to heavily focus on offense in FA. Which will only improve the D too so they aren't put in bad field position and can play with a lead .

You can clearly see the blueprint and vision this staff has and we are set up to have long term success starting next year!

Dawkins: average-ish, which makes him by far the best O lineman playing now.

Teller: doesn't appear overmatched, but way, way too soon to tell that he'll be anything more than, say, a Ryan Groy.

Jones: has had his awful moments, his good moments, looks like maybe a guy who could be peak Jordan Matthews. Possible breakout potential I guess, but that's not exactly his expected progression at this point.

Foster: has shown signs. Has he done more this year than Deonte Thompson last year? I like him, but still ...

... bottom line: you've pointed out useful players. Guys you wouldn't cut unless there's someone clearly better on the roster. But again (my point, and the OP's point): nobody other than Allen is clearly a keeper.

I am not sure why everyone is so distressed. I was just hoping to get some other view points on the season that has pretty much wrapped up.   There are plenty of NFL JAGs on the team.  It is pretty easy to no one on offense other than Allen being on the team to start the 2020 season.  Just based no sheer numbers someone likely will. But almost everyone can be matched or upgraded with an average NFL player at any offensive position.

And this is correct too. Keepers on defense: Edmunds (I really like him), Milano, Tre White, Hyde/Poyer (but the clock is ticking contract wise). And I kind of like the Phillips "twins" as keepers too. Defense is in pretty good shape because key players are young. I'm looking at the 2020-22 type window, assuming Allen develops. Guys like Jerry Hughes don't count for that time frame.

And that's the key. Realistically, if Allen progresses, you'd like to be able to make a nice run in his 3rd/4th/5th years, before you'd need to commit huge money to him. That means 2020-2022. Even guys some of us kind of like will have either washed out or will be free agents by then. Zay/Dawkins: free agents after 2020. So those aren't necessarily guys you build around.

Add that to THE MOST important position (QB), and you have a good start.  A long way to go, but a start, and plenty of resources this offseason.

you forgot stud rookie Taron Johnson and Levi Wallace who has suddenly emerged as a potential legit #2 cb. If he closes the season strong , we are set in the secondary. Shaq / Murphy are solid for 1 DE spot. Hughes has 2 years left at the minimum,  Poyer/Hyde have 3 years left after this season,  clock isn't ticking?

Mckenzie also looks like  a stud as a swiss army knife type player

I like McKenzie. Liked him with the Broncos too, but they never gave him a chance other than as a punt returner - something he's been a disaster at.

I didn't realize Poyer/Hyde had 3 years left, so they may be guys who'll be around during our "window." Taron Johnson was impressive in limited action too. Maybe Wallace as well. Shaq: no, since he'll be a free agent. Murphy: I doubt it, because he hasn't stayed on the field.

I like where this team is headed. We are definitely further ahead on defense than offense. Allen is the Qb to build on and I feel Shady is worth keeping if the o-line is improved?! Clay is probably done but he can at least block unlike the rest.

We need a “franchise “ center to lead this line and another guard at least. Wide receiver needs help too but Zay has really improved.

Of the coaches I think Castillo needs to be replaced. Considering what we have to put on the field the others have done fine. The o line has shown almost no improvement!

IMO Allen would really benefit from a good TE!! A play maker even possibly in FA. Daboll should have a big say so in the drafting of offensive talent. I don’t think McDermott has that ability yet.But he is awesome on the defensive side!!

Shady probably only has one more season left which is a bummer. I would love to see him get a ring!

Kyle and Lorax too!

This is the same coaching group (plus Deboll) that took a undertalented team with a limited QB to the playoffs in its first season.

Im not worried at all

- Defense is top 10 and improving by the year

- They will get their OL issues fixed

- We found some offensive diamond in the rough types

- Allen with year under his belt

90 mill in cap space and 10 draft picks coming up soon

All just a guy.  They are not terrible players. None of them performs at an above average level for their position.
