Free tuition and room/board seems like a pretty good deal to me. Not sure what needs to be fixed.

So all the other student athletes, toiling away in the weight room, at practice, risking injury, traveling during Break, and competing in their sports at the NCAA level while still going to class, etc. get what exactly?

No one's forcing them to play.  They can walk away from the sport if they want to.

Perhaps if they get something, it would benefit the many college guys that don't make the NFL, and maybe teach the ones who are getting in how to handle a few bucks before the millions fall from the sky.

I'm not talking about big money... 30k or something yearly. Some of these guys are household names and are making their programs millions, all while bumming rides and scraping together cash for a $5 footlong.

How much revenue do they generate and do schools make additional money from their likenesses/names via jersey sales etc?

Ah, they do get a free education. What is the going rate on that these days, over $40,000. Moreover, they get a generous allowance for food, all kinds of free gear and swag, a special dorm with many perks the average student does not get, all books paid for, etc., etc. The point: they are already well compensated.

I honestly don't care what private schools do, but public schools already spend too much taxpayer money being the NFL's farm teams.  The NFL should fund its own farm teams, like baseball.

Many in the revenue generating sports are directed toward sham majors designed to keep them eligible with no real career path or marketable skills for the real world.

In turn that knowledge means, from the outset these young men ate banking on football being their meal ticket. That is no one else fault or weight to bear. They made the choice to accept the scholarship and follow that path.

My issue with paying college athletes is seeing how irresponsible NFL players are as "grown men," giving teenagers for the most past money to play seems like you could lead down a scary path.

Hey, I'm a civil libertarian, I hear you about taxpayer money.

But if these programs are making huge profits, I believe there should be some sort of profit sharing or collective bargaining for these players. Even after college, the NFL prospects often go out and get [presumably] hugh interest cash loans to wear 100k around their neck on draft day.

I would also like the NFL to invest some money in professional management and money services for these kids, even when they are still in college. You take some poor farm kid or ghetto kid that is only there on scholarship and give him 30 million dollars, and everybidy is shocked when they make poor decisions. That's all I'm saying.

College teams can have up to 125 players on the active roster. 60 - 70 is typical. That’s $2M/yr. That’s big money.

This plan is stupid  because most of the guys who are making money for the school are not going to graduate. If they do they do not care about the $50K when they graduate they care about the $12 Million. Rosen needs to concentrate on football.

I have a colleague whose son played at FSU a few years back as mainly a backup. He received the free education, free food, trips all over country, stipend per game he was active(I think only when active), and when they went to Orange Bowl he got like 12 grand in swag. I had a sweeter life in college then since-working like a slob with us.

$40,000/yr is about the average cost of tuition at a private college. Tack on room and board which is another $12,000/yr or so. Tuition and room/board at Stanford is $65,000/yr.
