BLUE STATE BLUES: California’s AB5 Leaves Women Business Owners Reeling.

Aimee Benavides has built a thriving career as a translator and interpreter while homeschooling her nine-year-old daughter, who has autism, and 11-year-old son, who is heavily involved in STEM enrichment classes. What makes it all possible is the home-based business she started in 2010, after leaving a full-time job in the court system.

It isn’t easy to juggle it all. Sometimes she starts work at 5:30 am to get her work done—or brings her son to the school board meetings where she takes on evening projects. “The times I don’t take my son with me, they ask, ‘How is your son?’” she says.

Still, Benavides would not trade the flexibility of self-employment for a traditional job. Benavides’ business allows her and her husband, an IT professional, to afford the cost of living in Fresno, Calif., while still permitting them to manage their family responsibilities.

Benavides is one of a number of self-employed women in California who are speaking out in opposition to AB5, a union-backed law aimed at preventing misclassification of gig workers that took effect on January 1.

You will be made to conform, comrades.

Newsome can lower excise taxes, but the problem with the dope sales is not taxes. The problem is that most CAs (yeah, the same people who voted to make marijuana legal) don't want dispensaries in their neighborhood, so cities ban dispensaries regardless of the state law. You'd think people like Newsome would be able to understand that, under the microscope, dropping the excise tax 4% is not going to move the needle because people will continue to buy off the 'black market' instead of driving to a dispensary.

California’s legal market has not grown as expected, a problem the cannabis industry and some state officials have attributed to factors including high taxes, bureaucratic red tape and the fact that three-quarters of California cities have banned pot shops.

But hey...look at that view!

Actually, the things they want to help farmers fund are good things. Compost applications, grazing management, tree planting, etc. is all good stuff.

But naturally people have to FUBAR it by referencing the scam that is global warming cooling climate change crisis. Next you note that they could raise $10M, and no one in CA thinks for one minute that any of that money will actually go to the farmers.

But hey...look at that view!

They have as most politicians are very good at. Do we start scooping them up and forcing them into treatment centers?  Forcing meds in them?  Forcing rehab?  Even that is a temporary fix. There is no cure for what these people suffer from.

The ACLU screwed that up 40 years ago.

...he's dodged the corruption bullet for years....where is Gruesome Newsome on this one?..........crickets...

This is fake news. Proposition 13 is a state school construction bond! It has nothing to do property taxes! Proposition numbers are assigned by decades, and go in numeric cycles. There have been a few Prop 13s since the infamous one. The current one is totally unrelated to property taxes. Sheeesh!

I'm so old I remember when Orange County was solidly conservative.

It's still solidly conservative. Ballot harvesting makes it appear like it's a liberal area now.

Consider this: the single-most conservative county in all CA turned completely blue in the last election. Not one little are stayed red. Everything blue.

The county didn't change overnight. Ballot harvesting changed the results.

...so why do the Progressives think it's time to bring the "World's Big Bully" to its knees?.......and the instigators are worth how many MILLIONS or BILLIONS?......so we should punish drive and initiative to individually do better (THE country's foundation) and be forced to share those successes with the lackadaisical parasites looking for the "free ride" or the Dems "vote for us" mantra?...I'm successful but not wealthy and don't mind helping those who WANT TO HELP THEMSELVES (my annual Fed & NYS tax tab says so)....and the mindless skanks like Sanders don't think I do enough?....capitalism is THE pig?........stymie the drive and initiative of go getters looking to get better?.....isn't that our roots?.....I 'll hang up as listen to where I have wronged the left.......

Garcetti makes it sound like the ONLY people affected by his recklessness are the people of LA County, as if illegals just stay within the county border.

But again, it doesn't matter. As long as ballot harvesting is legal, Garcetti and the Dems can do whatever the hell they want and there's not a damn thing anyone in CA can do about it...except leave.

 But hey, nice view.

AB5: An Open Letter to CA Government Democrats – WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

Congratulations, California Democrats! You’ve successfully scared the holy bejeezus out of all California companies. Now, let’s talk.

In Marvel Universe terms, you’re Tony Stark. You tried to do something to protect everyone, but you created Ultron. Now, it’s time for a Vision.

It’s been 6 weeks since AB5 was signed and put into effect. We’ve now had 6 weeks to see some actual results. So, as a CPA with clients in the Independent Contractor world, and as a lifelong Democrat whose Assemblyperson and Governor actually voted for this shitshow that is AB5, I need to ask: What were you thinking?

H.L. Mencken smiles.

She's right. CA independent contractors just got Bernie Bro'd by the state in exchange for union money to the elected.

Ya gotta admit, though, if you're a CA Dem who is accepted by the DNC, you are easily elected to state office through ballot harvesting. All you need to do now is sit back and collect donations from special interests and never fear losing your seat no matter what you do.

But hey...those beaches are beautiful, right?

Speaking as a guy who lives in California you’d never know anyone other than Bloomberg and Bernie are on the ballot. I’ve yet to see a single TV ad for Biden, Amy, Mayor Pete or Pocahontas.

Don't forget Steyer.  He is REALLY qualified because his mother was a teacher and his father joined the navy and was involved in prosecuting Nazis in Nurenburg.  Those are some great reasons to vote for him.  Oh and he "walked away" from his business.    His ads make it sound like he just moved on to solve all the worlds problems.  No he sold for a boatload.
