First take on final 53

Recommended Posts

After a great draft and signing of undrafted free agents here is my first take on the final 53 man roster we will see for the start of the season:

QB : McCarron, Allen, Peterman

RB - McCoy, Ivory, Caderet, DiMarco

WR - Benjamin, Jones, Streeter, Holmes, Foster, McDonald, Prohel

TE - Clay, O'Leary, Thomas, Lee

G/C - Miller, Duchasse, Teller, Groy, Bodine

T - Dawkins, Newhouse, Mills, McDermott

ST - Haucheska, Ferguson, Schmidt

DT - Lutulii, Williams, Phillips, Washington

DE - Hughes, Murphy, Lawson, Yarborough

OLB - Milano, Humber, Stanford, Alexander

ILB - Edmunds, Vallejo

CB - White, Davis, Johnson, Gaines, Wallace

S - Hyde, Poyer, Neal, Bush

I'm assuming we may pursue depth at MLB and possible get rid of TE Lee or move McDonald or Proehl to the practice squad.

Your thoughts and feedback as always are welcome

I'm white and I know there is a resurgance of white receivers in the league but I don't think Proehl will be one of them, sorry.

Foster is a guy I like a lot, I like him way better than Proehl and McCloud, I think he has a real shot at not only making the roster but seeing significant playing time, he is my dark horse pick, I like him a lot.

Why can’t a back up center perform the duties of a long snapper?

Lol the long snapper has the easiest !@#$ing gig I swear.

Yeah never understood that either, even a TE could do it.

You can't even line up over the most protected position in football.

I think it has more to do with practice time than anything else. With the current CBA, there isn’t enough practice time for one player to practice with the offensive live and the special team kicking units. My 2 cents.

Peterman gets cut if Allen shows he is even halfway capable of running the offense

One or two of those WRs get PS'ed

Lee gets cut (hopefully)

(Long snappers are extremely specialized and valued. No, not anyone can just do it - in addition to their other duties. Once you master the skill, and do it correct every time, your an NFL lifer. There are a couple of camps that pump out basically all the long snappers in the NFL, its actually quite interesting. I don't have time to search for the article but there was a great one a couple seasons back about the road to the NFL as a long snapper. Quite good)

Long snapping is a very specialized skill. These guys practice it basically for the entire practice. Overlooking this to keep some garbage bottom 53 player is not wise. Just ask Trey Junkin who cost the Giants a playoff game...they got cheap and took him off the scrap heap. People don't realize that a split half second of snap time is the difference between every kick getting blocked and none of them getting blocked.

McCloud makes this team over Cadet. He fills several different holes/needs. 3rd RB, returner, and slot WR. His ability to play several positions is what'll help him make the team. Proehl is a very good possession WR will be a good fit and should develop quite nicely. Still need ILB depth, Edmunds played outside so you never know if he will adjust that well to a new position.

I’m hoping there is someone there that we are not expecting much from that really steps up and surprises us ( like Milano last year...)

I’ll hope for McDermott at RT...

got me wondering too...

The only thing I'd add is:

I could see this staff keeping "their guy" Tenny Palepoi over Adolphus Washington at DT. Washington is my "surprise cut" right now.

ummm...no   this year could be the year adolphus breaks out.....and hopefully shaq too. how about hatley?

Because most LS are LB sized (see 246 lbs). It might look like an easy job but imagine it's quite stressful as one bad one and your career could be over in a snap ;)

Seeing this outlined it looks like we still need to work on LB and possibly a veteran CB.

Dont tell me, tell the FO. I'm just guessing at what they will do, not what I think should happen. They've cleared a lot of picks from the previous regime. Washington could easily be on his way out. I personally would keep Washington, but not so sure the FO feels the same way.

I have been to training camp practices, and I have never seen a long snapper do more than 4-5x practice takes. Maybe I got bored watching?

Makes sense, just thought the 3rd or 4th string TE might be able to do it
