The Biggest Blunder of the Pegula Era

Schwartz took a middle of the road team with a good QB to the playoffs after being 1-15 a couple years prior. More than that, you could've at least retained what made the team good. Guys knew him, they liked playing for him. In that moment we were much closer to being successful than we are now.

My point is we if we keep St. Doug, obviously Schwartz stays as his DC too unless he would have got another HC offer.

This board is about as crazy as its ever been; try to grasp that the Buffalo Bills Organization, over a 17/17 year period developed a lousy organization with a losing culture, now we demand the playoffs in McBeane's first year. Anyone who thought this team was even close to a playoff contender is seriously misguided, even with Dareus, Watkins and the rest of the mediocre over rated guys that we have discarded. Sorry, this is a process - check out previous rebuild jobs!

vorpma, I think you're missing a few things here.  I don't think it's "demand playoffs" in McWrestler's first year that's the main concern here.

Pegula's hand picked Rex Ryan and McD. And let both of them do whatever they please including Rex bringing in his worthless brother to run the defense and McD dumping Whaley for his buddy in Carolina.

Let's not forget about Rex staying the night down at the Pegula's house in Florida to 'seal the deal' so to speak.

And just recently you can find a picture of Pegula and McD walking hand in hand boarding the team plane the other day for San Diego.

Whether or not Pegulas are meddlesome they certainly have no clue what they doing and should have hired a true professional to make the these decisions with the Bills and Sabres instead of the likes of Russ Brandon, who by the way is still pulling the strings behind the scenes because he's another Pegula favorite apparently.

...tell you right now he did NOT hand pick Wrecks.....that was Brandon's doing.....I saw his texts to friends of his and mine that said, "so what do you think?"......he was pretty proud of orchestrating it and I threw up in my car seat...........

Marrone turned his back on the Bills and walked out on his contract.

The Biggest Mistake is not hiring a GM and letting the GM hire his HC.

But we weren't going to keep him, he took that payday and quit. So I'm just wishing they made the best of a bad situation. Because once Rex was here he basically blew up the team. Switched defenses which was never going to work considering the personnel. Basically what this regime is doing now, but Rex was trying hard to keep people from the prior regime where as McDermott and Beane don't care.

Schwartz would have been great, but Marrone reportedly would have stayed if they gave him a guarantee. If that's true, then not paying Marrone and giving him assurances was their biggest mistake in my opinion.

I was not for Marrone cause of offense but looks like right now be right choice. With way Jags are performing. But I love to be wrong and those to be successful.

They should’ve been going through all this in 2015, not now.

Yep.  Pegula kept the old regimes from pre-Pegula-ownership with both the Sabres and Bills.

I believe that stems from him not really closely following either team.  Had he been a higher information fan, he would have cleaned house immediately with both organizations.

Waiting for those losers to prove to him that they were losers during his ownership set both rebuilds back several years.

Although I'm sure the Pegulas put a lot of thought into their franchise(s) hires. It seems like they are easily impressed. And not always with the correct people to run their teams. Their decisions seem to be quick, and face facts they know nothing about the player side of putting teams together. They trust others. And that so far has been a huge negative.

after the Ryan disaster. they are persuaded too go with a more disciplined approach. so in comes a HC hire who has so much power he on his own decides his GM. And both are rookies with zero track record too boot.

Sorry, here comes the Brandon reference. He is president of both teams. He sucks and one of 2 high ranking people left on the Bills. Leftover from the Wilson era. He sucks and has way too much influence in the hires, and whatever else. Even though the Pegulas will say he is simply on the business side. Don't buy it at all.

They talked to Coughlin and I believe he may have rejected a job offer as czar. Similar too what he does in Jacksonville with another clueless NFL owner. They need a footbal guy in here where both McD and Beane, and assistants all report too. It is not happening.

As for the Sabres. What a tank job, they still suck as bad as before the tank. . I was at their first home V this season the 1-0 snooze fest. They suck, will not make the playoffs and what has changed nesides some FO names? Maybe hope that some kids can work their way up and become serviceable in a couple of years.

The Pegulas for all the good they have done for the city of Buffalo. Are not the type of ownership whose franchises provide hope or will dominate in the near future. They should stay out of the sports side and hopefully they are not the types who said pull Tyrod and put the rookie in. If they did the Bills, are doomed. Just uber wealthy fans with big toys.

Forget Schwartz, it was not keeping St. Doug who I always felt was going to be the next Bill Parcells type of coach and he's well on his way to turning around another pathetic NFL franchise in his first season as HC in Jax.

Biggest problem with the Pegulas is they seem to be easily manipulated by the used car salesman types, whether Russ Brandon (who miraculously not only kept his gig with the Bills but had it expanded to the Sabres as well), Rex Ryan and now McD/Beane.

I'm not sure the St Doug we might have kept, would be the same coach who is having success in Jax.

The scuttlebut was St Doug went to the Pegs and demanded contract extensions for himself and his assistants and a higher degree of roster control, and Pegs said "No".

Doug had a bit of humbling in his descent to offensive assistant for Jax, and he is far from having roster control down in Jax.  He's working within his sphere of competence and so far, so good.

But that may not have been the case, had he stayed here.

I wasn't particularly broken hearted when Marrone left, he has the best season record of any coach we have had in awhile. You really can't argue with results, besides yes of course Schwartz had the D showing out.

Do you think McVay would have came to Buffalo though?

I'm guessing L.A was an attractive job for him because of having the first pick off the board in Goff to work with

He picked up both Bills WR and would've had LeSean and Tyrod. This team was weapon heaven.

So far, to me, it has been not retaining Schwartz as the head coach when Marrone tucked tail and scurried back to whatever hole he crawled out of. The Ryan regime was a disaster and has really brought us to the point we're at today.

Meh.

Weak take.

Should have kept Marrone or let Whaley choose his guy.

Schwartz was a proven failure in Detroit and would have likely just delegated his defense so some turd and been a rollercoaster of a HC again.

Hired washed up Cunther Gunningham to be his DC in Detroit.  Good Lawd'.
