The abuse heaped upon star athletes in our society. It can start even before high school. Then in high school they are singled out, identified, forced to interact with cheerleaders and other icky girl people. For some it gets crueler still where they are made to sign letters binding them to colleges and then torn from their homes. When away from the safety of their family homes, they are subjected to more harassment from girl and women people, but now there is no escape and it can last all night long. They are also subjected to the horrors of perks from people calling themselves "boosters". Thankfully the most tragic outcomes are uncommon. But poor Tyrod is one of those uncommon few. Tyrod Taylor is a starting quarterback in the NFL. Will the nightmare never end for Tyrod?? Tyrod Taylor is more than an abuse survivor. Tyrod Taylor is Hero. We are 70 years removed from Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. We are 63 years removed from Brown vs. Board of Education. We are 54 years removed from "I have a dream." and "segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" 91 million Americans are older than 54 So 91 million Americans were alive during a time when it was perfectly acceptable to discriminate based on the color of skin. It would be a broad (and ignorant) stroke to say they were all racist but imo it would be just as ignorant to pretend that some of these people don't still hold onto their racist ideals sports figure or not. I think we as America are making a lot of progress and the further these events get away from current events the better off we will be but they aren't that far in our rear view. It won't go away so long as people perpetuate a false narrative. It's not about truth or if it's going to/is better. But leaving aside the question of race in that, one general observation on black athletes : They seem to have an easier time embodying any number of undesirable traits - such as "selfish" or "arrogant" or "obnoxious" - than their white peers. Given human nature, that sorta thing is never far off - so it's a bit unfair black athletes appear to have an inside track. My favorite example is "thug". I've see that term thrown around a lot in sports talk, but can't ever remember a white "thug". A few year back Virginia Tech had a very-white (honest-to-god) "thug" kicker. But I don't think anyone ever called him that....... A few years back a white basketball player on the Syracuse team was called a thug. He does some good thing and some bad things not a franchise guy but without a doubt gives us the best chance to win. I'm not blind I also see one playmaker in McCoy. I think we lose reality of what qb play is in the NFL right now our comparison is to hall of fame quarterbacks. seriously? thats the bar? Good prospects get drafted early; not so good prospects get drafted late. Sometimes early drafts suck; sometimes late drafts turn out great. He was drafted accurately and all anyone expects from him is to do the things other NFL starting QBs can do; like read defenses, make up his mind, throw accurately, call audibles ... you know ... QB stuff. He can't. Not because he's black. Because he's JUST. NOT. THAT. !@#$ING. Bucky Gleason and Jerry Sullivan are going to set me straight? Good lord.... He's not a traditional quarterback and they can't figure out how to look at him. Takes knowledge why things don't work, what the defense is able to do etc. Not a clue nor do they have any interest in trying to find out. Other teams in every other division in the NFL can have down years and still sneak into the playoffs. Other teams can get subpar qb play and still be a competitive team. Subpar QB play or play on the level of TT is very much the norm in the NFL. Only the Patriots bring it every single freaking game. Just this season: Big Ben has had a 5 int game, has thrown for 300 yards once and it took 55 attempts to do so, and Steelers lost to Jags and Bears Cam Newton already has 2 games with 3 ints, 2 games completing less than 60%, and 2 games scoring 13 or less points Eli has 1 game over 300 yards and it 47 attempts to do so. In fact in their only win he had 128 passing yards and less than 60% completion. Russel Wilson has 3 games out of 5 with 5.85 ypa or worse, also 3 games out of 5 with less than 200 yards passing and sub 60% completions Dak Prescott has less than 270 yards passing in every game and a lower ypa than TT Phillip Rivers has 2 games with 50% or lower completions and 3 games sub 6 ypa, Drew Brees has only broken 300 yards passing once. Many members on this board admitted to only watching Bills games yet offer opinions of what a qb should be. Look at the thread about what games people will watch during the Bills bye. Those same members however are convinced that TT is terrible. It's the Brady effect since we "get" to see him twice a year. Most qbs are erratic, every qb misses throws, every qb has bad games/stretches in games. It isn't racism it is offering an uninformed opinion. And threw fewer interceptions. Neither one was that good, but Flutie was a worse QB. Yet beloved by many. Observe the white people's player jerseys at an NFL game. At a Bills game, you'll see more Alonzo, Spielman, Poz, Paup, Incognito (who outsells Tyrod!) etc than would be warranted given their tenure and quality. There's a reason for that. That's not a situation unique to Buffalo--go to Denver and join the Ed McCaffrey parade into Mile High. The point is that it does matter to enough that it makes a difference. Taylor feels it and of course it's real. That doesn't mean he hasn't earned the criticism he gets. But most people outside Buffalo see a guy with 3 penguins for wide receivers giving it his all to grind out improbable wins. Hard not to like a guy like that. And yet the fan base is calling for Nate Peterman because he's going to transform Andre Holmes into Jerry Rice.
