Speaking to him since the biggest reason he felt he had to end it was because he felt he had no place. He couldn't reconcile himself with the gay community because he didn't want to wear a rainbow flag or go to drag clubs or march for pride but he thought that the friends and community he lived in as a "straight" man would reject him if they found out he was gay. He lived in fear of that ever single day. He came through it he is a much better person to be around now and he has had absolutely zero mental health issues since. He wasn't someone susceptible to mental health episodes who happened to be gay. He was someone whose internal trauma between the he that the world saw and the he that was true drove him to try and take his own life. I wonder how many people in that situation you have spoken to? Gay bashing? -In the 70's and early 80's??? OMG, it was a serious problem... We lived in NYC briefly, and it was a serious issue.. Often some sick rite of passage for "straight" adolescent males. When I was about 14 a kid we were all friends with (boy) hit on another kid (Also a boy)... The kid who spurned the other kids advances told EVERYONE, leading the gay kid to try OD'ing on pills... He tried taking himself out again the following year... -That is hardcore, despair, my man... What the hell are we, if we choose not give a damn about each other's states of mind? Even without the recent Pulse night club massacre, homosexuals are targeted for violence in MANY countries around the world... Like I said, I poke fun, but it's serious business in some places. What strikes me is the belief, seemingly held by many, that homosexuality almost automatically equates to mental illness. Correlation does not necessarily imply causation, and this man expressing suicidal ideation does not automatically mean that he is/was mentally ill. I jus think elements on the far right can get carried away with their agendas.... If an NFL player casually walked to the sidelines after a game and kissed their boyfriend, and it happened to be caught on camera, I have a feeling that crowd would suddenly find it very important. One way or another a gay person will come out unless they make it a point to hide it for their whole life. But people don't care nearly as much as they used to. Even just 10 years ago it was a completely different atmosphere. Nowadays most people see news like this, say "oh okay" and move on without giving it much thought. They have such an incredible pulse on things from gambling, to LGBTQ issues, to international expansion, to community initiatives, to modern media. They pretty much create or pioneer everything happening in sports and then if it works other leagues try to copy them. They have all of the top minds in sports. As long as those several billions of people treat others around them with the same respect that they expect to receive then I guess it's ok. He was from a very religious and conservative family in rural southern Ohio. The difference once he came out was amazing. He became so much happier and lives a good life now. I understand feeling compassion and I do, but we have kids laying in hospital beds all over the world fighting to just stay alive, not end it. They're my heroes... Anyone who fights through their personal pain to get up and keep trying is some one to commend. One person does not have to take anything away from the other person.
