Myles Jack Could Slide Down in the Draft

Recommended Posts

@alexmarvez

I know at least 1 team strongly considered drafting @MylesJack late in Round 1. Couldn't get over knee issue & take the risk. @SiriusXMNFL

It's a tough one, especially with the optional 5th year you get with drafting a guy in the 1st.

Draft Jack and possibly not get to use that 5th year option OR draft a guy you would prefer to have for 5 years and take Jack in the 2nd on 4 year deal.

I have accepted the sad reality that the explosive Myles Jack we all came to know in all those game tapes is gone. This kind of medical consensus is rare for the NFL. When you have so little cartilage remaining that it has to be manufactured in a surgical procedure, the chance of returning to elite athletic performance is slim. At best.

Damned shame.

The situation is less of a medical consensus and more of a "you should have kept your mouth shut." Twenty four hours before the draft the kid drops the M-word to the NY Post. That's terrifying to GMs, especially hearing that at the last minute with no time to process it. He would have been better off admitting he's a serial killer.

After Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman took Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Vernon Butler with the 30th, he made the obligatory remark about Butler being the highest-rated player on their board.
He was then asked if Jack was even on his board.
“Oh, yeah,” Gettleman replied immediately.
When asked if he was surprised Jack was still available — since many thought would have been a top 10 pick if not for a knee injury that’s going to require more attention — Gettleman was frank.
“Not after what he said today,” Gettleman said. “Very frankly. The kid came out and said he is going to need a microfracture.”

What was the medical consensus after he made the statement? That's the point. "Microfracture" is a show-stopping term because so few regain their original athleticism after having it. A player like Jack, whose rare blend of ability and size made him so versatile and perhaps the best overall player in the draft as a result, would be particularly impacted in that he may now be limited in what he can be asked to execute on the field.

But I agree he never should have offered up the information.

@adamschefter

Dr. James Andrews, who examined Myles Jack in December, told the UCLA LB today that he does not need micro-fracture surgery.

Um, he told him the day after the first round of the draft? Wtf

Who is Jack's agent? If it is Sexton; is this believable info?

No problem. Only cost the kid about $30 million.

WTF indeed.

This would be the same Dr. Andrews that pronounced RG3 fit and able to return to that playoff game a few years ago while serving as the team doctor in DC. We all know what happened after that.

I get that he has long been the preeminent practitioner in his field, but this is ridiculous.

Schefter is all over the place with who needs what surgery but did Cleveland draft Jack yet?

What was the medical consensus after he made the statement?

No doctors examined him after he made that statement, there was no last minute "medical consensus." There's a big difference between other teams sending out misinformation compared to a player openly admitting he needs surgery.

The kid screwed up and created a panic at the last minute. If he kept his mouth shut, he was going in the 1st round.

Just the term scared teams away and I think that's obvious. Some sort of consensus was met, whether you call it "medical" or not. It was certainly a medical term that caused the fall. It all boils down to a concern about his knee. If that isn't medical, so be it. The AMA didn't have to convene a meeting to establish the medical criteria.

Definitely should have kept his mouth shut, though.

Bills need this guy. He will shut down Gronk and will de-cleat Edleman if he tries to come across the middle. Make it happen!

It appears like the difference between #49 and #32 is a third round pick. What do you guys think? I'm down with it if he doesn't need micro. I mean Shaq and Jack in our front 7, and then 2 4ths, 5th and 2 6ths-sounds pretty darn good.
