Dan Carpenter injury (update - put on notice)

Recommended Posts

Wait, isn't Carpenter one of the most clutch players we have? I didn't want or listen to any of last night's game. Did he miss 10 kicks or something?

he missed a 40 yarder. He has missed half of his FGs this preseason (went 3-6), plus an extra point. I don't blame Rex for not being comfortable with that. Edited by YoloinOhio

For all the Nervous Nellie's out there, who from this list would you trust more than Carp?

Exactly. There are no diamonds in the rough waiting to be found. Carpenter might be struggling but better a has-been than a never-was. Give him a chance to knock off the rust. Why do I have a sinking feeling that we are going to end up with a free agent kicker whose sole claim to fame is once having played for the Jets?

He was money last year and was hurt and has barely had any kicking time in the preseason to get back into rhythm.

Im not worried

Rex's issue is that Carpenter doesn't do kickoffs. You can tell because he throws that in with every complaint. So if you are keeping 2 kickers they'd better both do their assigned job very very well. Jordan Gay has done his part, Carpenter hasn't. If they bring someone in it would be a 1 for 2 deal to free up a roster spot. There would be no point bringing in a mediocre kicker who did not kick off. Jordan Gay must be really bad at FGs for him to not even be an option.

and when the guy gets hurt you have zero kickers on the team.. See Bills v Steelers preseason game.

Since Rex apparently has no viable plan B, what good does it do to call out Carpenter, who was one of the best kickers in the league last year? Shouldn't he be saying something like "we aren't worried. We have confidence that Dan will come through when the games matter."??? I don't get it.

In all due respect: No. Rex is saying exactly what he should be, do your damn job or find somewhere else to play. I realize he was fantastic the last two years for the BILLS, but as someone who loves this team and has seen mediocrity be the standard for far too long, I'm okay with a HC and his staff say, "Hey, you better get your sh*t together or we're finding someone who does". The Kicker is NOT the least valued option on a playoff team - See Vinateri, Adam and Gostkowski, Stephen - only in Fantasy Football does a Kicker not get his true value. Especially in Buffalo - you need a clutch Kicker who has a hammer for a leg and is accurate. I also agree that I'm not in favor of carrying 2 Kickers, for any reason. You have Special Teams tacklers for a reason, let them go out and hit someone. Keep an extra LB or WR so he doesn't end up with the Patsies....

I wonder if there could be more to the story too. Maybe Rex doesn't like how he prepared at camp or there is something shady with his injury (he was on he NFI list so he pulled the hammy outside of football). He needs to be able to have a reliable kicker and right now he does not, regardless of what he's done in the past. That has to be very scary for him. We don't know how much the injury affected him in the preseason or will continue to affect him but it could be the difference between a win or loss in the regular season and that's likely the reason Rex went off the reservation.

I'd tryout guys, but unless he misses kicks in real games, I wouldn't chuck him just yet.

He's already missed 3 in preseason (plus an extra point). These weren't long FG's either. Try someone else out or see if our kickoff specialist can be just as inconsistent. We still don't have a sure fire solution for QB, so our kicker has got to be money. If he's not we can save 2.5 million there.
