TC fights, ineffectual play, is Marrone losing the team?

Recommended Posts

This team is out of control:

completely dressed down Hughes in front of the team. Wow. wow wow wow wow wow.

"Marrone lined players up on one sideline and ripped into them for fighting. At one point, defensive end Jerry Hughes talked back to Marrone, leading to more shouting from Marrone in Hughes' direction, questioning him about whether he wanted to stay on the team.

Players then ran sprints across the field in an apparent act of discipline.

Looking directly at Hughes, Marrone used several profanities in telling the player to stop complaining.

"Why can't you handle it as players?" Marrone yelled. He then motioned toward the locker room and said: "Do you want to play on this team?"

Once again looking at Hughes, Marrone said: "If you've got a problem with me, you need to come and tell me.""

Season appears to be spiraling out of control and it's not even week 3... OF THE PRESEASON!!!

truly unbelievable. Can't remember things being this much of a train wreck since we fired our OC (can't even remember his name now, AVP?) before week 1 of the 09 season, then promptly had our hearts ripped out by new england week 1 on mnf.

coincidently that season, we lost the hall of fame game, won our second preseason game, and then spiraled out of control for the final 3 preseason contests, with the offense looking terrible--blanked in the second to last preseason game, which led to the dismissal of the oc.

things are looking eerily similar--but come all ye faithful, tell me why we're going to go 11-5 this year.

actually, I'm going to adjust my win prediction from 4-12 to 2-14 right now.

offense: can't score any points

defense: lost it's 2 best players and only coordinator to have us playing good on that side of the ball since fewel

special teams: worst in the year last year, retained the coach, thinking about keeping a kick off specialist?

overall team: hates the coaching staff now, and must be wondering when the hell they can get out of buffalo, know marrone is a lame duck coach soon to be replaced by new owner, and their spot on the team is not a given.

train wreck city boys--train wreck city.

Worst thread ever and that saying something on this board. It may actually be best Troll thread ever. I'm not sure. It may be both.

"The players had to run wind sprints therefore the season is lost."

Amazing leap of logic.

I actually love it. Marrone showing some balls. Hell, this what most of us as fans want to do to the players when they show a lack of dedication. I absolutely love it. Physical camps build tough teams.

Dam right, this is 100% correct. The Bills have been soft for 15 years, this is why we loose games in the 4th qt & opposing teams hit the bus laughing after paying the Bills. Who the hell does Jerry Hughes think he is ? He's been a classic under achiever & had 1 good year in a hybrid defense last year (thanks to the talent around him) Could you imagine this guy in training camp with Lombardi, Parcells, Coughlin, etc. Get rid of this ass clown if camp is too tough for him.

Also, how does the original poster know Marrone is a lame duck coach ?

Hughes was actually lauded by Marrone in the presser after the incident (this is not two days in a row, but a re-hash of yesterdays incident) as being great in practice. He wished other starters went as hard as Hughes were his exact words. Kicking one of the top DE's off the team is not the answer. Actually, it would be a really stupid response. Also, though Hughes was the most vocal, Marrone stated that he directed his statements at everyone on the sideline.

A.) Knowing far too little maybe you shouldn't be reading between the lines. B.) Tom Coughlin was hired by the Jags in 1995 their first year. His hard ass approach got them to the playoffs in year 2,3, and 4. The latter they went to the AFC title game. Before that he was a college coach, sound familiar? I, for one, would take those results.

Wonderful attempt at argument suppression. No one's entitled to have an opinion (on a message board no less) if they aren't right there with the team.

The players aren't responding to Marrone and he's frustrated. If you can't tell that from his statements to the media I don't know what to tell you. Remember the brief answers after the HOF game? What precipitated that, losing the most meaningless game of the year? Doubtful. It also doesn't help his future is murky at best considering the pending ownership change.

There's nothing more frustrating as a leader when the people you supervise aren't responding to what you're trying to communicate. And this most certainly isn't a case of tearing the team down to build them up. This is a guy who's stressed out that his message ain't hitting home.

And someone was ridiculed for calling Marrone, "Greggo." That person deserves an apology.

I didn't see it until now. As a professional coach, I'd like to chime in that you can be an aggressive harass without trying to fit square pegs into round holes. Seems like Doug doesn't understand the difference between creating a tough competitive environment and creating an unhappy environment for people to grow as men and athletes. That's truly the mark of a great coach. Managing rosters and athletes is equally as important as X's and O's, physiology, and technical issues. A good coach will lose lower teir athletes, but will have a growing central group that almost always attracts the most prolific athletes to its center.

So when somebody talks back to an authority figure the authority figure has automatically, "lost control?" Kids talk back to their parents, to their teachers and employs to bosses. It's what happens when people can't control their emotions. In no way does that equal "losing control."

Personally, I like seeing some guys get angry out there. It's better than the sleepwalk we've seen the past decade.

The biggest overreaction I've seen in awhile. Most people think this team is weak and timid year in and year out. It's about time we have a tough, physical team. Pampering them has not worked over the last several years. On top of that he told the team he didn't want to see any fighting and in the beginning of practice there was already scuffles breaking out. I, for one, welcome the change. Hoping your team goes 0-16? Doesn't sound like a fan to me. 19-0 BABY.

I think we are misconstruing the issue here. The fights are fine, I like them. The management and reaction to them is poor. To be a good coach you have to be able to manipulate your players enough to not butt heads with the

Just about every team in the NFL has had skirmishes, fights in camp this year... Stop over-reacting it is getting unbearable.

And hughes said something stupid on the sidelines so what... he is a football player, these guys are not CEOs of major companies here. They are not exactly the most intelligent people in the world which is why they run into each other for a living.

+1 The NFL Network has reported numerous fights and scraps among several teams. Pat Kirwan opined that the new CBA and all of its rules regarding number of practices, practice duration, and number of days in pads leads to more intense practices resulting in more fights. The only thing that concerns me is Hughes acting out of line but Marrone handled that. Everything else is football.
