What unreasonable expectations for Watkins are you referring to, specifically? Most of what I've seen suggests a pretty "pedestrian" output for a No. 1 WR. Ideally, his presence on the field opens things up for Williams and Woods (and the TEs) -- and the running game.

Uhhh, Whaley himself who's now on record as having said that we'll make the playoffs and that Watkins implicitly will be the reason.

Some of you seem to ignore the team's own statements. Doesn't matter what we say, does it? No, it doesn't. But when a GM Makes such promises, after going all in on a player like Whaley did for Watkins this year and Manuel last year, then it says somewhat more.

Sorry you've failed to pick up on Whaley's statements which have been in the media more times than our record of playoff futility, but maybe you should look a little more closely before challenging statements like this.

I have no other aliases. I don't post that much and just come here from time to time, usually on a day off or when I have some time to kill.

Reported by whom? You did read, I'm sure, the actual reports that Williams was held back during OTAs while recovering from injury, right?

BTW, have you read that Williams has been held back for a variety of reasons throughout his pro career?

I realize that once players get to Buffalo none of their negatives ever rear their ugly heads, like Manuel's inability to learn anything new, or his inability to read a defense. I'm sure that Spikes will burgeon in the passing game too now that he's here.

I honestly don't get it either, and perhaps it says something about the karma surrounding this franchise.

From what I saw, all SJ did was get open, and that was against some of the very best DB's in the league like Revis Island. No other Bills WR in the history of the team had three 1000 yard seasons in a row. The guy played hurt all the time with various injuries that would sideline most players.

The biggest thing in my view is that he loved playing for the Buffalo Bills. Which is something that so many other players have shown that they wanted out of Buffalo. McGahee, Byrd, Levitre, Poz, Whitner, among others.

Do I miss him? The season hasn't even started yet, and we don't know how this receiver corps will look until the regular season games begin. My first thoughts are yes, the Bills will miss that guy who was always open. Will they miss the critical drops, or the antics...no!

All I can do is wish SJ the best in SF.

I might be completely alone in this sentiment... but I will miss his antics. And, I suspect the locker room will, as well. The penalties? No. But, I personally find the league's current allergy to anything resembling emotion in the end zone to be a downer. And, let's face it, it's gotta be pretty hard to keep up morale as a Bill. One of the things I appreciated the most about Steven Johnson, was his dedication to having fun.

If Williams is "held" back like he was at TB, I'll be OK with his 800-900+ yds per season. Not even taking the bait on the EJ stuff. No one expects Spike to do anything above and beyond what he did in NE. Edited by YoloinOhio

+1

(or the Pittsburgh game)

I think what last year showed us is that he's not getting better about it either.

But it wasn't just the crunch time drops, it was all the other drive killing drops and just plain ole drops.

We need to get rid of all the non clutch players that we depend on a lot off of this team. This is not to say that Stevie didnt have great production.......but when it was time to actually win the game with a big play? I was always hoping the ball went somewhere OTHER

SJ epitomized the same old find new ways to lose Bills. Time to move on. I am super excited that we have brought in some fresh talent at WR to go with our new QB. Should help EJ a lot.

But the catches were tougher than they looked (read: blame the QB) and remember if the drop is early in the game, it shouldn't count as much. /s Edited by YoloinOhio

If Whaley's statements are so easy to find please point me to them -- specifically the ones where he says "we WILL make the playoffs this year and Watkins will be the reason." And don't hide behind this "implicit" crap -- either he said it or he didn't.

Your response to my question is a non-response. I asked where it was reported Mike Williams is on the bubble to make the Bills roster. Still waiting.

I recall seeing the same piece, which I am most certain was penned by one Mr. Rodack... And yes, I probably misspelled his name- I couldn't care less... He's a turd

Rodak's a boob. As soon as he tweeted or blogged that piece it was immediately released by the Bills that Williams was being brought along slowly to make sure he'd be at 100% for training camp.

My point stands -- nobody believes Williams is on any bubble. He'll be one of the top 3.

I liked Stevie's ability and it was nice when the ability resulted in a positive play or W.

However, there was always something destructive about Stevie's game. I saw it numerous times in the past when he was flagged for taunting. I saw it when he dropped that TD against the steelers. And it showed up last year with that late fumble.

This was a recurring football nightmare I would have: big first down vs Patriots taking us into red zone late in the game. Late flag....Stevie spiking the ball at a defender's feet. 15 yarder. Blown opportunity......resulting in another loss to NE.

I would shudder with that thought. I don't feel that anymore with the receivers we have now.

Dude, I completely agree with you!!! I see Woods (maybe Watkins) leading in receptions, Sammy leading yards, and Williams leading in touchdowns... Leading our team, that is... Not the league...

You just asked for the report... He did report it, but it wasn't credible...

Can someone please tell me why Norwood was no longer with the team after wide right? Did Christy take the job from him or did he retire, etc...

Too lazy to look for it

Norwood was on the team for the 1991 season following wide right. He had some rough moments, namely an eventual OT win at LA where he had some critical misses. The team also carried a kickoff specialist that year as Norwood was deficient in that area . The next offseason Tampa Bay left their young star K Christie unprotected in "plan B" free agency and Bill Polian smartly signed him away from the Bucs. That's how I recall it , anyway.

Thanks! I was only 10 at the time, so didn't really pay any attention to that type of stuff...

Potential means you haven't done squat. I'm very excited about the potential of our young receivers. But who would bet money that one of them will put up 3 straight 1,000 yard seasons like Stevie.

Hopefully, sammy will be a much better receiver than Stevie. But I miss Stevie and think we're a better team with him. But Time will tell.

I will put up 2 cheap tickets if you do for that bet... But I will need 3- 1000 yard seasons in 5 years... Essentially better than SJ's first 5

I think Woods was born to play in the slot. But I don't think he will be there 100% of the time. Hackett seems to have purposefully tried to create versatility in the WR corp. to fit his scheme. While I think we will see Watkins and Williams there at times, I can also see them using Hogan there. Flame away, I know he has a bad rep, but that's they way things are going. They'll use and abuse him there when needed.

Flaming away !

wait i forget my matches again

Well to side with the Stevie bunch. ( i WAS wishy washy over the eventuality ) Sammy was drafted as close to number one as Bills allowed . and Cleveland of course. Although i dont expect anything spectacular this year , you gotta think he he breaks some highlight excerpts pretty early.

But like like any other player i think he weill need to settle in. and i have patience for that please , because he does all the right things and then some .

Did anyone notice that the last interview with Stevie , he had his back pack on. Most commented reffered to style . And it is for youth. I thought that interview was the end. i dont recall if it was BBcom or who. But it was a noticeable one.

Thing is Stevie wants to be on a winning team and he could not see that vision with the Bills anymore. Fair enough.

Go Stevie Johnson.

GO BILLS!
