Will Gronk be back for Week 1?

I feel like players who are having this sort of chronic issue need to just resign themselves to taking a season off for the sake of prolonging their career, vs rushing back and reinjuring things. Sucks for Gronk, I wish him health, but I won't shed a tear if he happens to miss games. :)

There's a reason he wasnt a slam dunk draft pick, and it wasnt lack of upside.

This is why I never have criticized the Bills for this. When he declined to go back to college for a year, after sitting out a year with the back surgery, I figured he's trying to cash in while he can...........He's certainly played worth the pick, but his career might not be long.

Agreed. He's been WELL worth the pick, but since the initial meltdownon draft day I've tried to remember that he seems to be a "how fast will he breakdown" not a "do you think he will breakdown" situation.

He exceeded all expectations on the field and has lasted long enough to prove worthy of a top pick but they may soon regret that contract which can be the real trouble with guys that are injury (or character) risks - you get them discounted then have to invest HEAVILY, but they don't last long term and you get stuck in tough spots. The pats would take him again in a heartbeat, don't get me wrong....

I wouldn't be so hard on the kid. I know he has a wild side but remember he's still a kid. When I was 22 I know I wasn't a choir boy. He has osteomyelitis which is a severe infection of the bone. This is very serious, and people have had their limbs amputated in severe infections. The person who posted he should take a year off may be right. The problem I'm guessing is he tried to do off season conditioning too quick which made it more difficult to heal. The other possible bonehead move on Gronk's part is alcohol diminishes the effectiveness of antibiotics so could contribute to the mess not clearing the infection faster.

I hope he takes this infection seriously for his benefit.

Just heard on radio this morning that after the surgery on his arm, Gronk will be heading to a spine specialist to have them check out a back issue he has been dealing with. They said it may require "minor" surgery. Can't imagine that is a good sign.

This. Reportedly, Gronk loves to party but he's smart with his money and tries to preserve his "asset" - invests his salary, lives off appearance fees, works out like a demon to keep up his skills.

As a Patriot* I must hate him, as a human being I hope he does what it takes to heal and yeah, alcohol will not help.

I'd never heard that alcohol can diminish the effects of antibiotics.

If that is in fact true, he's been acting like an idiot…. or an addict.

Put differently, if I knew that I could possibly have a limb amputated if my antibiotics didn't clear the infection and if also knew that there was a link between alcohol use and the reduced effectiveness of antibiotics, I WOULD NOT DRINK AGAIN until the infection cleared.

Even I knew this and I'm certainly no doctor. Gronk definitely knew this as he would've been told by his doctors even if he didn't know it already.

I'm comfortable concluding that alcohol had nothing to with his need for another surgery. He has an infected foreign body in his arm. Antibiotics rarely ever successfully sterilized an infected synthetic implant. It always has to come out.

Gronk didn't cause this complication....

Actually, I always heard this (and in my drinking days, paid no heed, much like Gronk). But, I googled it and places like the Mayo Clinic, etc. say that it doesn't diminish the anti-biotics. It can heighten side effects, but that's not the issue here.

Interesting. Maybe it was all a plot by the man to curtail my drinking.

right, and even if true, i think many will agree that his behavior (if it matches public perception) increased risk of complication even if it didnt directly cause any complications. the big question mark is how much was actual alcohol consumption and how much is him being an overgrown child that likes to jump around and look drunk. generally im not going to beat him up too badly, but there couldve been some dumb choices along the way even if they didnt cause the current issues.

Drinking didn't cause the infection, but he probably did something else really stupid that did. Like invite some 3rd rate puss rock/R&B band like LMFAO to play at as his surgery or have all his douche bag buddies fist bump to the rhythmic beat of his ekg or something.
