Honestly, the fact that no other solid reports of specific team visits have emerged and that he's staying another night despite PFT's report suggesting otherwise really makes it sound like it's just a matter of ironing out the details and that a PC is going to happen tomorrow. If we reach noon and there's no hint of progress then I'll be nervous. Otherwise, I feel pretty good.

I'm at the point where if Mario was going to sign he would have by now....deals do not take this long

Bills are going to have to force his hand tomorrow morning for an answer to get it done or move on

It was reported earlier that Mario is waiting for Peyton Manning to decide where to go so Mario can give Tennessee a chance to beat the Bills' offer. How much difference could a couple more dollars up front or guaranteed or whatever make when you're making that much already? He's taking a risk by holding off even for a few days by potentially being injured driving down the road, by other teams running out of cap space signing other players while waiting for him to decide, and by just making this into an ordeal for himself and his fiance. Say yes to Buffalo and begin to enjoy a nice place to play and to live.

I'm pretty sure that notion is pure speculation.

This second overnight stay (assuming he didn't check out of his hotel and flee the city under the cover of darkness) is bizarre. I've never heard of a FA visit lasting this long. On one hand, this does assuage my fears that Williams* was just using the Bills to create leverage with other teams and drive up the bidding, reminiscent of Tyson Clabo last year. There's no way he would stick around for a third day just to get other teams to up their offers. And I tend to doubt the speculation about Williams waiting to see where Manning signs. If that was the main holdup, he probably would've left Buffalo today as originally scheduled. I feel like Williams is truly considering Buffalo. Maybe it's a situation where he's on the fence about living there, or whether the team is close enough to contention, and he needs to think it over to make sure he's making the right decision personally and professionally. Or maybe it's a situation where he's open to playing in Buffalo, but only for a "DEEZ NUTZ" contract, and his agent is slowly negotiating the Bills up to that level. Or maybe he's basically on board with the Bills, but won't tip his hand yet, because his agent is telling him that he can get more money this way. I doubt it's the last one, but who knows? But at the very least, I'm confident that this is not a sham visit and that the Bills are really in play. That's good.

On the other hand, it's not a good sign that it's taking this long. We have reliable reports that the Bills have opened up the checkbook in a major way. Usually the top free agents like Williams sign almost right away because someone blew them away with a massive offer. It kind of sounds like the Bills did that, but he still didn't sign. I don't know if I can necessarily fault Williams if he doesn't sign with the Bills, and I don't know if I can necessarily fault the Bills' FO either, but it would still be massively disappointing. I think we're all tired of winning the "we tried our best" sweepstakes. And losing out on Williams now would do nothing to help the perception of Buffalo as a city/franchise nation/league-wide. The Bills are perceived as a joke at best and a non-entity or farm club at worst. The "Ralph is cheap" crowd probably won't have much to say (unless it comes out that negotiations broke down over a relatively small amount). And it's unlikely that anyone could seriously claim that Williams was using the Bills to drive up bids all along. But the narrative will still be that Buffalo is such a horrible place/franchise that even though they offered the richest defensive contract in NFL history, outbidding all other teams, Williams still couldn't be convinced to go there. You'll hear things like "no amount of money is worth throwing your career down the toilet." Terrible.

All in all, it's puzzling to me. I'm curious about what's taking so long regardless of how it plays out. Of course, the bottom line is that I'll be elated if he signs and very disappointed if he doesn't. Go Bills!

*when I refer to Mario Williams in this post, I'm really talking about the combination of Williams and his agent, and it's probably about 30/70. The player ultimately makes the final decision of whether to sign or not, but the agent is fully in charge of the whole process.

I haven't read through all 127 pages… it was at around 59 when I left the house this morning so I don't know if anyone had the same thought but I'm kind of chuckling to myself imagining Mario Williams as a desperate prisoner of the Buffalo Bills.

In my vision the Bills have him locked up in the bowels of the stadium in a straightjacket on a old wooden chair… in front of a small table with a lamp, a pen, and a contract.

Carl Mauck is in front of him, his face just inches from Mario's, screaming at him to sign the contract. After 5 minutes of berating Mario, Mauck returns to his chair in a huff and lights a cigarette.

Marv Levy then gets up and approaches Mario speaking in his trademark mellifluous voice… "Mario you know you want to sign this contract… "

Lol, those are great images. And I sure as heck miss Carl Mauck... what a great character in Bills history!

They can play that and the Music City Miracle on a loop.

Why stop there? Might as well add "Wide Right."

Great post. I think you've covered everything… except for the "Prisoner Theory."

Outstanding job!

Something like this, perhaps?

Back in two aught twelve, the meanest, most feared pass rusher (that's something from this game called football we used to have)you ever did see came to Buffalo to sign with the local team for $100 million dollars, which was a lot of money back then. He was so quick, he could be in two places at once. He even checked out of his hotel while at a hockey (another game we used to have where people tied metal to their feet and glided around on ice hitting a disk with sticks)game. Boy was he somethin, there'll never be another like him, you mark my words.

Former New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem discusses decision to sign with San Diego Chargers:

Former New Orleans Saints receiver Robert Meachem said there was no better opportunity for him than the chance to play a "premier" role for the San Diego Chargers. That's why the Saints' former No. 1 draft pick left to sign a reported four-year, $25.9 million deal with San Diego as a free agent.

Meachem said on Sirius-XM NFL Radio's "Late Hits" Wednesday that he didn't know if the Saints would make a serious run at re-signing him, especially after they re-signed fellow receiver Marques Colston on Tuesday morning. So he told his agent to explore all of his options.

Meachem was actually in a hotel room in Buffalo, where he had flown to visit the Bills, when he agreed to sign with the Chargers.....

I say good riddance. Glad we did not overpay for this clown. I am not sure he is a #1.

Thoughts?

Tim Russert's widow. Luke Russert's mother.

I don't think that's right. Tim's widow isn't from Buffalo, but his mother is. It's nice to see that Tim used some of his NBC money to build her a mansion.

Agreed. His numbers last year were no better than Nelson's. Plenty of WR's in the draft who are bigger and will probably be better than that dude.

Yeah that must be it. He brought in his future wife to enjoy the Seneca Casino and the great waterfront of Buffalo while taking a mini vacation before he signs his contract with another team.

Jim Kelly's nephew (and Clemson freshman QB) Chad Kelly:

@chadkelly12

#GoBills #thankYouGod #thatisallimgonnasay

Regardless of this post I like this kid. I really have no idea if or how good he is but I would hope he males it to the NFL and possibly as a big star. Could be the next big thing out of Buffalo in the NFL or possibly our future QB if he's any good.
