Is McDermott/Bean just Jauron/Levy II?
sjjr replied to BADOLBILZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jauron had some experience with Holmgren and Coughlin but had been a head coach twice prior to the Bills. He also came to the Bills at an older age. With that said...of all the coaches the Bills have had since the last playoff appearance, I have the most respect for Jauron. -

McDermott seems like an energetic, highly motivated guy who has had the chance to spend significant time under consistently successful coaches/organizations. His experience with Andy Reid and how the Eagles went from a bad franchise to a consistent contender had to help. Then to go to the Panthers where they built that team through the draft into a consistent winner. After all of that he seems he really wants to prove himself. Not sure Jauron had that resume coming to the Bills. Beane also seems highly motivated and comes from a strong organization that was successful in a market similar to Buffalo. Marv Levy was a great coach for those Bills teams but a completely unproven GM so hard to compare that. It looks like these guys are going to build a team through the draft with high character players that love the game and want to win. -
Go on record regarding the trades

Brown is elite after the catch and has a chip on his shoulder. He's a much better player than Sammy Watkins. With that said, the franchise cornerstone there is still Big Ben. I think there were a lot of people at the time questioning the selection by the Bills when they drafted Watkins at 4 after trading up. -

Sammy is a good player but a franchise corner stone? Receivers that I can think of that have been franchise corner stones in recent years would be Julio Jones, AJ Green, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, (Calvin Johnson-not successful team). All of these players had elite size and the ability to make spectacular catches downfield even when being heavily covered. Sammy has good size and speed, not elite. He's a great route runner with great hands but not elite after the catch. He seems to play his best and stay healthy when he's playing to get drafted or possibly in a contract year like in 2017. It was a reach to draft him at 4 and that's probably one of the major reasons Marrone did what he did and now Whaley has lost his job. He's a good player but not a franchise corner stone. Matthews will be productive and a few years from now, people will be very pleased with these trades. -
If they wanted to trade him, would have been around draft time. It's a big year for him and expect him to perform. I'm sure the Bills feel they have a very competitive team for this season after the trades. Wouldn't be surprised if they swapped some more young guys before Week 1 to get guys that fit better.

Zay Jones might surprise with his explosiveness. Can make some unbelievable catches down field. When he's had 1 on 1 matchups in college and at all star games he's made plays. -

I think they expect Clay be a threat down the seam and Zay Jones to win 1 on 1 matchups when he gets them. Have to hope one of the fast guys steps up and becomes another deep threat now. -

Looking at career stats between Matthews and Watkins is pretty interesting...especially looking at games played, catches and TD. He also seems to be a great teammate and blocker in the run game. Wentz was pretty upset by the trade. Gaines and Darby have similar career stats. Gaines was much more productive in college and always has shown the ability to be around the ball. That fits better. Very subjective until games are played but seems like upgrades with these new coaching staff and scheme. -
QB, RB, interior DL, LB and DB strong. All positions Bills can draft in top 100.

Like the moves...got rid of two players that haven't produced and didn't fit with the new coaching staff/scheme. Both players will fit the staff/scheme. This team will win running the ball, playing solid defense and winning the turnover battle. Sammy Watkins was never a key ingredient in that formula and certainly not Darby. Matthews and Gaines are upgrades. Plus got more picks...6 picks in the top 100 for 2018. Those will be the building blocks for the future. -
Dawkins should be a big upgrade at RT. Maybe the team moves on from Mills, Henderson and even Kouiandijo. The rest of the line from last season should start and be better as a unit with Dawkins. Pyke was a very good RG in college and could make the team as depth.

Should be great against the run and add some pass rush at times. Again, this defense fits what he can do better. Could be like Charles Johnson was in Carolina.

The path to the Super Bowl, the last 10 winners.
sjjr replied to PlayoffsPlease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If you go back far enough, all of these organizations listed had to clean house and change the direction of the franchise. Belichick to NE was dramatic....Coughlin instilling discipline to the Giants...Carroll leaving USC... There was change top to bottom. All of these teams also were well run, drafted well and had draft picks play key roles in winning games. Von Miller and the D won that superbowl with Peyton just not making mistakes for example. Also, the QBs who won were not #1 overall picks but more guys who were value picked or looked over coming out. The only exception is Eli Manning and he isn't a dominant player in those wins. Guys like Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger... We have a solid owner and he appears to have gotten a GM who can be successful in Buffalo with a head coach who knows how to get it done. Tyrod Taylor has a chip on his shoulder after having been overlooked every step of the way. The Bills have draft picks that need to produce like Marcel Dareus, Sammy Watkins, Shaq Lawson, Tredavious White, Reggie Ragland, Cordy Glenn, Darby, Z.Jones and D.Dawkins to be successful. New GMs and Head Coaches that have success show improvement day to day, game to game and year to year. We have to forget the last 17 seasons and understand where this team is now. It just finished an underachieving 7-9 season and has the talent to be competing for a wild card in the AFC. There is no reason we shouldn't expect to be right there all season long and let these guys build the team to be consistently successful long term. -
If Sammy has a breakout 2017 year - How will the office feel
sjjr replied to sidbuff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He'll be motivated and will most likely be very productive. The nagging injuries and other things shouldn't be an issue this season. From there he'll want a big contract extension or maybe a move to another team for more money. The Bills should look at franchising him or signing an extension very incentive based. He'll have great trade value if Z.Jones is ready to produce or they can stay with him. The Bills need to be very careful what kind of players they sign to long term deals going forward. The last few long term extensions have not produced the way they thought. -
No can't trade him now. Peterman can be a solid #2. He can win a lot of games with a strong defense. The Bills only won 7 games last season because the defense was very disappointing. If he plays the same and the defense improves to be top 10, they could be 3 wins better. Long term, he seems to have problems stepping up against the best defenses and in big moments when plays need to be made. But the Bills aren't a superbowl contender now so if he makes the playoffs next season it would be a huge success and he can do that easily.

Watson is the best QB in this class by far and has the best situation by far. He'll have an opportunity to be a superbowl champion in his first few seasons and then the Texans can build around him long term. Mahomes could be the next Favre. Peterman could have a solid career as a #2QB and maybe become a starter.
-
The Bills had a great draft because they got 3 immediate starters, a 2018 1st round pick and 3 players that will provide depth/special teams with the upside of potentially starting in the future. I believe Watson is a future star franchise QB so would have done things differently.... Would have taken Watson at 10 and found a way to get Z.Jones early in the 2nd the way the Bills did. Probably wouldn't have ended up with Dawkins but loved that pick by the Bills too. At 75, could have taken Desmond King and he could man the nickel and punt return duties. He doesn't have the upside White does though. Later in the draft, liked Peterman, Milano and Vallejo ok. Maybe would have looked at Jordan Evans (LB-Oklahoma), Anthony Walker (LB-Northwestern), Brooks Ellis (LB-Arkansas), Xavier Woods (S-La Tech), Jordan Morgan (OL-Kutztown), Matt Dayes (RB-NC State) and Keionta Davis (DE-Chattanooga).

He is going to be really productive this season if the Bills don't pick up his option. His value will be higher and the Bills could opt to sign him to a deal or franchise him. Seems like he's the kind of guy though that really is motivated by contract years. Only way the Bills trade him now is if they get a 1st round pick and conditional picks based on performance. This would also mean that Zay Jones and Clay are ready to be stars in this offense. Long term Zay Jones will probably have a more productive career than Sammy.

RD 2, Pick 37: Zay Jones (WR) - ECU

Great Pick! Might be the best 2nd Rd pick since Thurman Thomas -
RD 1, Pick 27: Tre'Davious White (CB) - LSU
sjjr replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Looks like he can play nickel and punt return right away with the upside to start on the outside later. Maybe he was third on their board for this position after Adoree Jackson and Peppers were taken earlier. Trade got some great value but have to see what players they get with those picks tonight and next year. Must not have thought Watson would turn this franchise around. Think the Texans got the pick of the night. -

Bills decline to match Gillislee offer sheet
sjjr replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sorry to see Gilleslee go but Tolbert has been pretty good in goalline situations throughout his career and J.Williams+Late round RB value selection should be fine replacements.
