  3. The NFL is a for profit league, like all professional sports, so close games keeps everyone on the edge of their seat and sells. Of course every game is changed by referee calls or non-calls. Are the Bills the only victims? No. But the refs kept the Bengals in the game and wanted to give them the chance to win for sure. Bottom line is though, that's a game that a good (playoff) team pulls out at the end. The Bills weren't good enough.
  4. When Smith was with the Jets, he had two big games in Wildcat against the Bengals...could be a big week for him.
  5. I watched the entire game and Lee Evans looked out of rhythm. He also had a hard time getting any separation from the Steeler corners. The Ravens probably will judge him to be a success if he can beat Steeler corners in January....
  6. Good Post! This was a solid draft that will produce several productive players. Spiller obviously is great but look out for Carrington.
  7. From everything that he has done in the draft scouting process, he appears to be a project at best with a winning attitude. His physical ability and upside makes him a 3rd or 4th round pick according to most experts. With that said, some GM needing to sell tickets will probably reach to get him in rounds 1 or 2. Remember he rushed for a lot of yards with power in an offense that created favorable matchups for him against smaller LBs or DBS. He won't get those matchups in the NFL. Not to mention he never had to read defenses in a pro style offense. It's going to be a tough transition for him on the field. He'll sell tickets for somebody though.
  8. Trent Williams Rd 1 Cam Thomas Rd 2 Brandon Spikes Rd 3 McCluster Rd 4- He should be there after a slower 40 time at the combine
  9. The Bills have to pick up D.Johnson from the Chiefs and fix the strong side LB problem. He could be a star.
  10. First, the Bills should tweak the offense to be based on the talent at RB. Make it a run first team. QB: Look at veteran free agents to be like Jason Campbell, Tavares Jackson, Orton or Pennington. Other QBs like Hasselbeck or Delhomme could be there as well if those teams rebuild. Also look at a QB in the drafts middle rounds. Guys like C. McCoy, D.LeFevour or Jarret Brown might be decent fits. Let the guys who come in compete with Edwards and Fitz for the 3 roster slots. OT: Let's see how Bell develops along with the rest of the line. They should get better each game and be much better next year. Potential 1st rd picks like B. Bulaga from Iowa or T. Williams from Oklahoma would be big tackles that could play either right or left. Let them compete with Scott, Bell, Meredith and Butler. Butler is injury prone though. The Bills need to continue to build a young line that can play together for many years like the Cowboys or Giants have now.
  11. On offense, they will have to run the ball and not turn it over. On defense, they must contain the run and make Delhomme throw on key 3rd downs. If they do that, they have a good shot.
  12. Good post. They are winnable if the Bills run the ball, stop the run and don't turn it over. Its a week to week league and the Bills just need to build some momentum now after looking so bad.
  13. The NFL is a week to week league and all about matchups. In 5 of 6 games, the Bills have been right there at the end. Edwards has given them a chance to win despite below average stats. Fitzpatrick did the same thing yesterday. His stats were not pretty and had the Jets made their FG attempt in OT, this message would be making Fitzpatrick a goat for that pick. The short passes isn't the problem, its the timing. Montana and Brady have made livings off of short passes to guys who make big plays after the catch. To get Evans, TO, etc doing that the timing has to be better on the short throws. Edwards needs the whole season to show the entire body of work. Give him that. If he's not able to go, it will be interesting to see how Fitzpatrick performs when the other team is gameplanning for him. Keep in mind though, if the Bills run the ball, whomever is back there will look much better. They play two porous run defenses the next two weeks.
  14. If they find a way to stop the run and not turn the ball over, it will be a close game. Maybe the special teams can get back to playing well.
  15. The Bills are obviously not looking like a playoff team now. In fact, right now, they may be the worst team in the league. Now its time to look at the team, play to win now and look at the future. Everyone on this site is looking forward, but I'd like to put my own 2 cents in I guess. Here are my thoughts.... The Bills now: Offense: The no-huddle offense is not working and its costing them games. It cost them 45 key penalty yards in a bad football game with a bad team. There is not enough experience playing together to pull that off, especially on the disasterous offensive line. Edwards is not a good QB on the move and he is just flustered every play, expecting to not have time. Right Tackle is a disaster, sign someone! The talent on offense is concentrated in two RBs and two WRs. The Bills should make a 180 and run a ball control offense around the run game and play action. Try to shorten games and have a shot at the end. Hopefully, the new front office will have an idea of who can play on that offensive line and who can't. Defense: Someone needs to inform the Bills that the cover 2 defense is not a novelty in the NFL anymore. It was 10 years ago and only 1 team has won a superbowl with it and the Bills D doesn't resemble the Bucs of 02. The cover 2 is a predictable defense that doesn't work in the AFC East. Its like playing chess when you're opponent knows all of your moves. Not even the Colts and Bucs, the 2 teams that have played it best, play it anymore. Let's bring more pressure, and play more man. Also, can Nic Harris get on the field?? If Mitchell and Buggs are gone, then lets move Ellison to MLB, Harris to strong side LB and sign D. Brooks to share WLB with Palmer. With a small style change, this defense could be real good. Personnel: If the Bills can get value in trading TO or Parrish then they should do so immediately. Trading overpaid players like Kelsay, Schobel, Evans or Whitner will only result in cap penalties that will handcuff the franchise. I still say Edwards and the entire team need the year to give the next front office a fair evaluation of what is there. Future: Mr. Wilson hopefully will hire a competent football person, to run football operations. Guys like Holmgren, Shanahan or B. Polian's son come to mind. Hopefully, after evaluating current personnel they will conclude that with a few key FA signings and a solid draft that the Bills can be competitive immediately. A smooth transition to west coast offense and a pressure 4-3 D could do it. A total overhaul would be painful after everything both the Bills and fans have invested in these players. As for Jauron, let him finish the year. He's a good guy, but he's not getting it done. And Bobby April is not the answer, he's not really handling Special Teams all that well at this point. Its easy to blame it all on Jauron, but the Bills have been failing to be a good team for a long time before he got here.
  16. 1. Holmgren- He has shown he can take bad weather franchises with recent problems winning, to continued success. Also could develop Edwards in west coast offense or get another veteran for immediate success. Wouldn't be a complete overhaul either in offensive or defensive personnel or style. 2. Dungy- He'd never come, but would be a smooth transition to success. 3. Gruden- Similar to Holmgren but probably would involve more of an overhaul in personnel and strategy. Also has never really proven to be a great GM type. 4. Others- Leslie Frazier could be interesting. How about Haslet? He knows Buffalo and plays to win... Cowher was successful in Pittsburgh. The Bills made the move to former Steeler people that were successful there to bring that strategy to Buffalo (Donahoe, Mularkey) and it didn't work. More times than not, when Steeler people leave that organization they aren't as successful.
  17. Rodgers is better right now than Edwards. But its mostly confidence, not pure talent. He knows his system and team works and the Bills QB doesn't have that. With that said, Van Pelt should watch how the Packers ran their offense last night. The Packers started the game by establishing Grant could hurt the Vikings by running or screens. They constantly moved the pocket and gave Rodgers high percentage passes early to build his confidence. They split Finley out and moved him around all night. He torched the Vikings all night. People forget with all of the Favre hoopla that Rodgers threw for almost 400 yds against one of the best defenses in the league in their house. If he doesn't make some mistakes or they get one of those two onside kicks, they might go to OT or even win that game. Why can't the Bills move the pocket (like the Pats game) during the entire game. They certainly have the backs to hurt people. Why can't Shawn Nelson move around the way Finley did last night? Tight ends have torched the Dolphins all season and it seemed like Nelson wasn't even in the gameplan last week. And if the Bills are going to run the no-huddle, make it a true no huddle. Give Edwards a chance with 3-4 plays and let him call them at the line given the defense. Get to the line quick and let the defenses tire out in their 3 point stances, while he reads and uses snap counts to keep pass rushes off balance. Let him use his greatest asset, his brain. They have to get Edward's confidence back now. If he doesn't get through whatever is bothering him, then the Bills are destined for another rebuilding process and as much as everyone is dogging the Bills, do we really want that again??
  18. After watching this performance today, fans should be frustrated. Its not because the Bills lost, its who this team has become. What the organization has to understand is, this is Buffalo and the AFC East. Its football. For any franchise to be loved in pro sports, its a good idea to put a product out there that fans can identify with. Western NY is a strong, tough, blue collar area. This team is not strong and tough! Today, the Bills just got beat up and basically had to say uncle. The Dolphins just pushed the smaller Bills around all day. Its whats happened in each of the last 8 AFC East games. And when this team gets pushed, they don't respond. The response is to check down, punt, play coverage and concede. To say uncle..... When Trent threw those picks today, he just trotted back with no emotion. I remember when Kelly used to throw picks, he get mad and try to kill the guy who got the pick. Marv would be yelling. Jauron just sits there, no fight. This team needs more tough guys. Guys like Eric Wood, Marcus Stroud, Poz and J.Reed are the guys this franchise should be building around. Not because they are the most talented, but because they have the never say die attitude. Fans need to give this team, this entire season to prove itself, but if this season ends up being less than 500 and the rebuilding effort comes on, then this franchise will get tough I hope.
  19. Give the guy this season before we or the Bills decide what he is or will be. He's 25 and in his crucial 3rd year in the NFL. If he stays healthy, wins games and puts up reasonable numbers then he will get a healthy extension (and the Bills have planned for this). If he does two of those three things, he still will probably get an extension. If he does 1 or less, then their may be competition for him next year and less patience toward him. This is his season (not preseason +3 games) to prove it to everyone, let him have that.....
  20. Nice Post. I agree the Bills can be very competitive in this game and also matchup well with New Orleans.
  21. The Bills can't stop the NO offense completely, but can hopefully contain it. Play the cover 2 and mix in some other coverages to keep Brees guessing somewhat. I don't think this is a guy to blitz a lot. Force him to throw short and then tackle immediately. Brees has a tendency to force things in these scenarios and when he does, capitalize with 2-3 turnovers throughout the game. Brees will probably throw for a lot of yards, but the Bills should hope to keep them out of the end zone when they get to the red zone. Schobel should also be able to get pressure because the Saints offensive line is banged up at Left Tackle. If the Bills hold them to FGs and the offense can play up to its potential, like the last 2 weeks, they should be in a position to win the game at the end.
  22. If Mr. DiCesare is right, the Bills are unloading big salaries to lower costs with no regard for the product on the field. They are also planning a Great Escape from Buffalo, according to Mr. DiCesare. I don't agree with this. They cut or traded players like Peters, Walker, Dockery and Fowler. These players, purely based on production last season, all underproduced at key points in the season. This line was put together to be able to maul all defenses, including 3-4s in the AFC East. It was so bad last season that teams could stop the run with a base 3-4 and go into coverage. That made Edwards look bad because he had no receiver other than Evans that could go and make plays in that scenario. They made a great investment in TO for both business and on the field. He is the 2nd guy to go and make plays. They traded an overvalued LT in Jason Peters. Dockery was a one dimensional guard. By all accounts Walker was overpaid and not producing. They replace these guys with two high draft picks that are smart, all weather players that love to play the game. They must feel Bell is better than Walker now. Hangartner will be missed by the Panthers. Butler was a great RT at Virginia, when he was on the field. If Ralph and Brandon are purely cost cutting and writing off the season, they should have finished the job then. What about guys like Kelsay, Denney, Parrish, Reed and McCargo? They all have big cap numbers but weren't cut. They cut players like C.Bryan, Hawthorne, Bowen and Mace who performed in preseason and would play at much lower salaries. The difference is they see value in these guys and these guys want to be there. The problem is, the Bills should have made these last few moves months ago. Ralph is demanding a competitive team and these are panic moves by Jauron to right the ship on the offense. Jauron must feel these are the best football players and coaches that the Bills have to win games this season. We'll see how it goes.....
