They are bigger and stronger at virtually every position. Major upgrades on OL and DL. Special teams may not be as good. The glaring problem here is QB. If they had a solid NFL QB they could be 8-5, not 5-8.

We can agree that the Defense has found itself over the last week. The defensive line is very good but may need some depth. Gilmore looks like a solid #1 CB for years to come. The offense has a big, physical offensive line. Stevie is a legit #1 WR at this point. CJ is a budding superstar who just needs more opportunities. If the blueprint is the Giants, we are a franchise QB and pass rush depth away. A piece or two....How many of these games would the Bills have lost with Eli Manning at QB??

I'm not sure there are a lot of options to "upgrade" at Head Coach out there that would actually come to Buffalo. If Gailey stays, he needs to allow Buddy to bring in a young potential franchise QB that has talent. Gailey seems to like the Jay Fiedlers, Neil O'Donnell's and Ryan Fitzpatrick QBs. To win, they have to get some more talent. If Gailey goes, maybe a realistic possibility would be to allow Wannstedt to be promoted to Head Coach and bring in a guy like Norv Turner as Offensive Coordinator. Similiar offense that could take off right away and has ties to Buddy from the past. Might not be what fans want but these options might be what they need to win next year. They are definitely better than when Buddy got here and we know that they are just a piece or two away now. They have got to bring in a QB that can win some close games, not get shown up.

He is a great athlete. He was probably drafted with the idea he could play special teams very well right away and get in on some nickel and dime packages. Definitely has the upside to be a starter but needs to develop quite a bit yet that would be why the Jags tested him so much. He needs to have a solid offseason.

First of all, I think they miss David Nelson a lot on 3rd downs and in the red zone. Another option at TE that is a little more athletic, especially after the catch would help. With this personnel, a 3WR set with CJ and a TE would make a lot of sense. Stevie in the slot is a tough matchup for anyone. Early in games, have to loosen up defenses with some passing, especially downfield. Later in the game, can go to double TE or FB sets to run more with CJ and Fred. Ideally, the Bills can get ahead early in games and play from ahead where they are much better. The defense seems to have it going finally so this could happen here going forward. There is no reason CJ shouldn't have 1500-2000 yards from scrimmage in each of the next few seasons.

Guys like Bridgewater, Driskel and Mannion sit in 2014 so that QB class may be much stronger than this year's draft even with some of the juniors. I think back to the Chargers with Nix and company when they drafted Drew Brees around pick 30-32 and then drafted Rivers a year or two later. Maybe the Bills could draft someone like Aaron Murray on the 2nd or 3rd round this year and see how it goes. In 2014, if one the guys above looks elite and ready then pull the trigger and have two QBs that can play. That's a whole lot better than where we are now with 3 QBs that should be backups.

On offense, there should be an advantage at the line of scrimmage and especially along the interior. Should be able to run consistently and mix in some short passing and screens. Have to take care of the ball just the way they did against the Dolphins. Let's run in some red zone TDs. On defense, the key has to be getting some contact at the line of scrimmage on all receivers. If they don't, Luck will eat them up with the short passing game. If they can do a good job on 1st and 2nd down of stopping the run then they'll be able to come after that offensive line on 3rd down. If the D-line plays the way it did against the Dolphins, they'll eat up the Colts O-line. How about a win of 24-17 for the Bills...

Thread for intelligent football dicussion
sjjr replied to metzelaars_lives's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Pats are pretty good offensively and when they get help like that from the refs, its tough for the defense. They played well enough to give them a chance to win. If they could have forced a turnover at some point, they probably win. The Bills are talented enough to win games. They can definitely upgrade from Fitz but there is no QB in the draft that is better than him right now. The best ones have good potential but need to be developed. In the 1st round, they should take the best player available. Ultimately it will depend on the rest of the season goes with this team to see who is here and what they need to get better. -
Have a good meeting with both Chan and Wannestedt. Reinforce I'm behind them 100% and we're in this together. Ask them what I can do from a personnel stand point in the immediate term. They already know this, but reinforce also that the performance just isn't good enough and if it doesn't improve changes will have to be made. Have a good talk with Mario Williams (Chan and Wannestedt also present) and let him know that he needs to step up. Remind him of the chance the Bills and Nix took on him by making him so highly paid. Make sure he knows that his performance hasn't been good enough in 6 out of 7 games. Make sure scouts are working hard looking at Texans. Keep working on looking at draft prospects, especially in the Florida-Georgia game and Miss St-Alabama. The team is a depressing 3-4, but it isn't over. This team will have plenty of chances to either redeem itself yet this year or finish the disappointment. There is no point on making rash moves in the middle of the season. It will show panic and put them further behind. The players need to play for the coaches or changes will have to be made at seasons end.

The Bills have had 4 awful losses and really are pretty lucky to be 3-4, considering how badly they've played. Fitz can't throw the ball down the field. Mario has played 1 good game in 7. The defense made Mark Sanchez, Brandon Bolden, Alex Smith and Matt Hasselbeck look like probowlers. They made Chris Johnson look like his 2010 self. Game management has been questionable at best. The unwillingness to come out of the base defenses and make adjustments is frustrating to say the least. It's bad... But the reality is that 21 of 32 teams today in the NFL have a 500 record or worse. Most of those teams fan bases are saying there team has no chance at the playoffs. Of the winning teams, the Ravens lost Ray Lewis and got blown out yesterday. The Cards are on a 3 game losing streak, including a loss to the Bills. The Pats don't look good. What's clear is that the Bills are bad but so is the rest of the most of the NFL right now. The AFC East is as open as it ever has been. This may be the weakest Pats team in over a decade. The problem is not any scheme, its effort. To play Wannestedt's scheme, he's got to have 4 monsters on the D-Line. At best he's had 1-2 most games. They have got to those players to play every down of every game. The depth on the D-line must play well also. This team is built to run the ball and play defense. That doesn't include Fitz throwing for 300 yds too often. The problem is the defense and it needs to be fixed now during the bye week. It starts with Mario Williams. If Gailey and Wannestedt can figure it out, they might make a run for this division yet. If they can't, we have to go rebuild.....and there are no franchise QBs coming out this year worth a top pick. Have to wait for Driskel or Bridgewater. I hope they get it together during the bye week and get these guys to play.

Are the Linebackers really this bad?
sjjr replied to VirginiaMike's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Sheppard is blocked, then the D-line should be free to make a play. They aren't winning matchups they must to play this defense. If they aren't winning and Sheppard is blocked then we need a weakside LB and SS to make more tackles. Really, if you're going to allow a guy who hasn't done anything all year to go for almost 200 on you then it has to be a team effort to be that bad. -
Yes, the Cards O-Line is bad but I think Mario would have been that disruptive against anybody yesterday. He has the physical talent to do that every Sunday. The question is, will be motivated enough to play that way every Sunday? Whatever the Bills did to him during the week, they need to repeat that another 10 times yet this season. When he plays that way, he gets accounted for with chips and double teams, which allows guys like Kelsay, Dareus, Williams and Moore to get favorable matchups and be disruptive. They still more depth on the D-line. If they don't get stops early in drives, they wear down and the lack of depth shows more.

Agreed, give it to CJ. I have no idea what he was thinking late in that game.

Looking ahead to the 2013 Draft...I know...I know...
sjjr replied to KOKBILLS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If Gailey is still there at the end of the season, a guy like EJ Manuel would be a good fit to develop. He could have a big upside for sure. Logan Thomas would too but needs another year in college probably. But this years draft is looking more and more like a really strong class of D-linemen more than QBs. -
The D needs help with D-line depth, nickel LB and SS. It also needs to look at WLB for the future as Barnett's contract comes up. D-line depth is the biggest thing. Merriman not being there to add to the pass rush is big but its also the play of the second team DTs. The Pats went no huddle whenever K.Williams and Dareus went out and pounded the ball against that nicklel D. They need to add 2 or 3 more solid depth players here. Nickel LB has not been good with Scott. He's getting beat in the pass game and blocked in the run game. Nice guy, but they need to upgrade. Wilson clearly isn't playing as well at S. They need to get better there. The rest of the D looks solid on paper. Gilmore is going to be a very good player soon. Need to resign Byrd. Sheppard is a good player in the base D. Even the best Defenses have a few holes and this D certainly has the talent to be a top10 or 15 unit. At the very least they shouldn't allow 52 and 45 points in consecutive weeks.

Maybe Moats will get a shot as a situational pass rusher. Speed rushes have been successful against the Cards OTs this season.

College Linebacker watch...little help here??
sjjr replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How about Jelani Jenkins from Florida? Could play weakside LB in the future and possibly fill in as a nickel LB. Also, we should look at Matt Elam from Florida to take over at SS. He can fill in run support and cover those TEs. -
Is Stephon Gilmore a potential BUST?
sjjr replied to Buffalo 66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No way we can say he's a bust right now. He's already the teams best corner. He's physical, a solid tackler, good in coverage and very athletic. He's been beat on some double moves but thats to be expected from a rookie trying to make a big play on a defense that is getting pushed around all day. Give him a chance and we might consider him one of the best CBs ever in Buffalo. -
The Gailey Era Is All But Over
sjjr replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Win at least 3 of last 4 games in division. Win at least 8 games. Show he can motivate the team. This game in Arizona will show that. -
If the defense is still this bad in late December then some moves need to be made. The main move would probably be around the coaching because its harder to undo big and long contracts. But let's hope the defense isn't as bad as it looks. Let's hope its a work in progress that will improve. This week and game against Arizona will say a lot about where they are going this season.

Everyone in the Bills organization must share success or failure, but Buddy Nix has done what he said he would for the most part. No one hits 100% or even 90% on draft picks. Picks like an emerging star in CJ Spiller, Cordy Glenn, Gilmore, Bradham and Dareus are all good to excellent picks. Guys like Justin Rogers, Carrington, Searcy and Moats are all solid picks. The QB situation is more of a Gailey thing I think. He likes his QBs like Fitz or Thigpen. Remember Jay Fiedler? He never would have liked Mallett. The defense is scary bad but it can't be as bad as it looks. They need to get it together now. Hopefully we can evaluate in late December and think more positively about Wannestedt and Mario.

The Vikings beat the niners a couple of weeks ago by taking care of the ball and making Alex Smith beat them. The Bills can do the same thing. Fitzpatrick has to play mistake free like Ponder did. Rudolph had 2 TDs against Whitner. Chandler can do that. The Bills need to stick to the running game even though it won't gain much, but just to stay on schedule more. On 3rd downs they need to make plays to move the chains. Maybe Donald Jones or TJ Graham can make some plays. On defense, the Bills can do what the Vikings did. Their base front 7 is good enough to stop the run and force Alex Smith to make plays. The Bills have better CBs than the Vikings so it will be tougher for the 49ers WRs. I know they looked bad last week but they are good enough to win today. They just can't turn the ball over and stop the run. If they do that, it should be a close game that they will have a chance to win.
-
It isn't all about sacks. He is really good against the run too. It's all about him being a factor and making opposing teams react to him with double teams and chips or he beats them 1 on 1 for sacks or tackles for loss. Against the Patriots, he didn't win 1 on 1 enough. Against the Jets, it was the same thing. If teams block him 1 on 1, he needs to make them pay. If they double, then the other three guys will make plays on the d-line.

Rodney Harrison: Mario Will Never Win In Buffalo
sjjr replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its show business...Harrison has to make headlines every week with ridiculous statements and predictions. He's just trying to hold down a job. Wasn't Nix part of the organization that let him walk to the Pats? Hopefully the Bills as a team and organization can use this latest dig from the national media to fuel their fire toward the playoffs. Let's pass judgement on the team, organization and Mario's decision after week 4 maybe but really in January. -
Jets are a bad matchup. Defense came out to stop run, but the Jets wanted to pass and Sanchez was sharp. The only player who played poorly on offense was Fitz and that was costly. Everything went wrong for the Bills and everything went right for the Jets. Chiefs should be a better matchup. The Bills matchup well with next two opponents and will play NE tough everytime the way they are built. Spiller looks ready to be a big time playmaker. Gilmore will get better from this. Fitz doesn't have to be great, just take care of the ball and the Bills will have chances to win every week. Let's look forward to how the Bills-Jets play it out in week 17.
