What two QB'S do we draft and in what rounds?
sjjr replied to Dat Dude's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How about Barkley/Glennon in round 1 and Renfree in rd 6 or UDFA. -
To me he's got as much upside as any QB in this draft. He's got all the physical tools necessary to be successful and seems to be a smart, good kid. He's clearly not ready to play now and needs to be developed over a few years before everyone knew what he could be. If the Bills were to bring in a veteran guy like Alex Smith, who could handle starting for a competitive team for 2-3 years while a guy like Manuel develops then he's the guy in the 2nd-4th round range. To me he's right there with Glennon and L.Jones as developmental prospects that are mid round picks with upsides given the right development in the right system. If not, has to be a guy who can play sooner like Barkley, G.Smith or T.Wilson.

Tyler Wilson - QB - Arkansas
sjjr replied to The Beautiful East's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Could be a good QB and the pick....but smaller hands, slight frame and inconsistent downfield accuracy are concerns for sure. -
Not sure if DaRick Rogers is a sleeper...was a 5 star recruit coming to Tennessee and was very good in the SEC when he played. He could be a very good player...
-
Great measureables for EJ Manuel. Nassib also had solid measureables. Dysert and Wilson had small hands.... B.Wreh Wilson (UConn) at CB could be a good fit in the middle rounds. Good size and long arms. A guy like C.Washington (Georgia) could be a middle to late round pick. Really want to see Cobi Hamilton (Arkansas) and Aaron Mellette (Elon) at WR.

To draft a QB in the first round, the team needs to believe that the guy will be a franchise QB that can play right away. The only QB that appears to be able to play right away would be Barkley. The others seem to be guys that need to be developed. It's going to be hard to take a QB in the 1st round of this draft.
-
Barkley has started since his freshman year in high school and has been a winner everywhere. For that reason, he will most likely start for some NFL team next season. He seems to be a strong leader, can read defenses and is accurate. The question would be arm strength, especially in Buffalo. Not sure if he fits Buffalo, but he might be the most ready to play QB in the draft, especially for a west coast type offense. I get the USC thing, but he comes from a different offense than Leinart, Palmer and Sanchez for instance. He also is very different in what he does well than them, especially a guy like Rob Johnson.
-
D.Miliner B.Mingo M.Barkley L.Joeckel any would be good picks at 8 to me.

There is a lot to like about what Marrone and his staff did at Syracuse. What is most impressive is the way he developed players. Guys like Chandler Jones, Justin Pugh and principally Ryan Nassib. Nassib's development and success is more impressive for Marrone and Hackett than it is for Nassib. The Bills need a new Franchise QB. The last two times Marrone has turned a team around he went with a "veteran" stop-gap (Brees-NO + Paulus-SU). During Paulus's year, Nassib watched and developed into a very successful three year starter. What we can hope for is that the Bills can get a guy like Alex Smith to come over and a guy is drafted that these guys can develop over a year or two. If they can't get A.Smith then the only QB that may be able to play right away would seem to be Barkley. They may choose Nassib, but it would only be because they think he can still get a lot better yet.
-
He's got a good arm, quick release and makes quick decisions. The deep ball accuracy is the question. Sounds a lot like...Fitz. He also had great receivers to throw to the last two seasons (Childs, J.Wright, J.Adams, C.Hamilton). He's definitely one of the best 10 QBs available in the draft but where he ends up will depend the next few months. That's really the case for most of the QBs this year.
-
Anderson may be a situational pass rusher at best, especially because he's injury prone and inconsistent. Pretty expensive...maybe re-sign Moore cheaper to do the same thing and release Anderson. Could use the extra cap space to look at a Free Agent like Kruger who can play that strongside, and allow M.Williams to rush the passer. If they think Miliner can play press man right away, got to take him at 8. If not, maybe DRC or Asomugha if he gets cut.
-
The Jets, Ravens and Cowboys have run it in the past. Maybe the Bills can bring in L.Landry at Safety, Devito for DL depth and B.Scott to compete with Moats at SILB. Could convert A.Williams to FS, especially if Byrd doesn't come back. The three man front of Dareus at SDE, K.Williams on the nose and Carrington at WDE sounds good to go with M.Williams and M.Anderson at OLBs. Big concern is another CB to go across from Gilmore. Unless Brooks develops into a starter that can play man. They also need a nickel corner. Could be a good defense right away.

If we agree that the elite QBs in the NFL are P.Manning, T.Brady, A.Rodgers, E.Manning, M.Ryan, B.Roethlisberger and A.Luck will be then they have following minimum stats from college.. Minimum 25 starts (Rodgers+Brady) Conf Win%= 58% (E.Manning) TD-Int Ratio= 1.58 (M.Ryan) Comp %= 60% (M.Ryan) Ryan played on a very average BC team and won a lot of close games late. E.Manning played for Ole Miss in the SEC so winning games was tough. Rodgers was a JC transfer and Brady competed with D.Henson at Michigan. The QBs that meet this criteria would be.... Geno Smith EJ Manuel Landry Jones Matt Barkley Tahj Boyd Matt Brown (Illinois State) Collin Klein Aaron Murray and AJ McCarron would make it too but aren't coming out this draft.
-
Sudfeld and Fauria at TE could be interesting prospects. Burkhead reminds me of Fred doing it all. Michael is talented if he can stay healthy at RB. Really want to see T.Goard at WR. On defense, Josh Boyd could be a realistic mid round pick for DT depth for the Bills. Pough and Holloman could be interesting LB or special team prospects.
-
Boyd and Hopkins were very impressive tonight. Both could come out after this against a really talented defense. Let's watch Murray tomorrow against Nebraska.
-
I'd take Lovie+Norv Turner.....
-
It seems like this draft will have a lot of projects. I like Murray best because he has a quick release, big arm and enough mobility to make a play when it breaks down. He could play right away and be successful. His measurables aren't perfect, but he can win right away. The others are all projects and the one with the biggest upside seems to be Bray from Tennessee. Then have to look at L.Jones, E.Manuel, M.Glennon, T.Wilson, G.Smith, Renfree and Nassib. I'm not as high on T.Wilson because he seems to have a lot of the same characteristics of Fitz when it comes to balls he throws well. G.Smith is good, but he has not shown at any point he can be successful in poor weather. L.Jones has won a lot, but has struggled when he gets pressure. M.Glennon looks good in workouts but it doesn't always translate to the field. If the Bills can get A.Murray at 40 in this draft, that could be a win. In round 1, get a playmaker for the defense.

Keep Buddy....
-
Its really early in the process now, but Ogletree and Murray in rounds 1+2 sound good. Ogletree could be a star.
-
I realize Wannestedt isn't a popular pick right now but it might be a realistic possibility. He and Norv Turner worked together in Miami in 2002 and got to the playoffs. Turner has run a similar system to Chan that could highlight CJ a little more. Turner also worked successfully with Alex Smith in the past and could help to get him here for a season while a young QB is developed. I also see that people like K.Shanahan and Jay Gruden. Both of these guys would probably want more power backs as opposed to CJ in the lineup. Also, its probably unlikely they would want to come to Buffalo. As far as free agency...maybe guys like C.Morrah, T.Beckum or maybe even Dustin Keller if the Jets don't re-sign him at pass catching TE. Nickel corners like C.Munnerlyn or B.Grimes would be upgrades. DT depth like P.Sims or S.Marks also.
-
Everyone seems to agree that this team is better, talent wise, than three years ago when Buddy came in. The potential is there to have some of the best offensive and defensive lines in the NFL. There are also some nice pieces like Spiller, Stevie and Gilmore to build around from a skill position stand point. The main reason the Bills are 5-10 is because they don't have enough playmakers in key situations. They have one of the worst turnover differentials in the league, bad in the red zone on both sides of the ball, bad on 3rd down conversions and particularly bad at the "details" that make great teams great. They could realistically make the following moves to turn these things around. -Fire Chan, Promote Wannestedt and hire Norv Turner as O.Coordinator. This gives them continuity but some change in message that is needed for fans and players. -Resign Byrd, Levitre, K.Moore and McIntire. Signing more depth at DT wouldn't hurt. Cut Barnett and let B.Scott walk. -They are terrible in nickel coverage with Barnett, Scott and Justin Rogers. All three of these players need to be replaced. Draft Alec Ogletree (or someone like him) at LB in the 1st or 2nd round who can play all 3 downs and can do it all athletically. Allow Bradham to play nickel backer because Shep is clearly a 2 down MLB. Find a free agent like Grimes, Munnerlyn or Mouton at nickel corner. -The base defense can be good with this personnel. They need to get a year older and more experienced mostly. Allowing Searcy to start at SS seems to make sense now. If they can play more zone that would fit A.Williams skill set at CB rather than man every down. More zone will also add some mystery to the defense for opposing QBs, especially mobile ones like Tannehill and R.Wilson. -QB is the obvious problem and an upgrade is necessary. Drafting a guy like Aaron Murray (Geno Smith if he's there) in the 1st or 2nd round to compete with a free agent and the current QBs might work. Another problem is that the Bills have only one guy who can consistently beat man coverage and that's Stevie. A second WR or TE who can do that would really help on 3rd down. There could be some free agent TEs and they could draft a guy like DaRick Rogers or Cobi Hamilton in the round 3-4. If they could just be even in turnover differential and average on 3rd downs and red zone opportunities, they could be a playoff team. A couple playmakers on defense to force more turnovers and some clutch players on offense could make the difference they need to be 10-5 at this time next year as opposed to 5-10. There is little probability they will blow this up by firing Nix and going to a 3-4 defense for instance. They are paying a guy $100 million who wants to play in a 4-3 and Buddy is clearly their pick for football operations. I think he can get it done and turned around in the next two years...

What Kind of QB Prospect Would You Pick?
sjjr replied to BisonMan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Glennon just seems like he will look great in workouts but it might not translate fully to the field. G.Smith needs to prove he can play in cold and windy weather. Dec 29 is big. T.Wilson just seems inaccurate and reminds me of Fitz. Barkley might not have a strong enough arm for Buffalo. How about Aaron Murray? He's not perfect because of his size but he's got a quick release, strong arm and is a leader. He's won a lot of games in the best conference at his level and broken a lot of passing records throwing to a lot of non NFL talent that are being covered by NFL level talent. He lost Cordy Glenn and Ben Jones this year and still had a great season in 2012. He could come in and possibly play right away...and maybe win some games. -
Byrd and Levitre are the key guys now. Then would be nice to get Moore, Rinehart, McKelvin, S.Johnson, Choice and Mcintire back. No reason not to get the restricted and exclusive rights guys back in. Bryan Scott has to be upgraded this offseason.
-
How about Aaron Murray early in the 2nd round? Let him get into a 3 man competition with Fitz and T.Jackson. Maybe add another FA QB to compete also but let go of Thigpen. Get the best defender they can in the 1st rd like Ogletree or Miliner.
-
The Seahawks were a below average team that was clearly improving last year but in need of a QB. They decided to get a competition going between a hot FA, a mature mid round pick and the previous starter. The best player went on to win the competition and they are 9-5. The Redskins did a similar thing by bringing in two rookie QBs and letting the best player play. They lead the division. The Bills aren't that far away talent wise but they need significantly better QB play. They should let Thigpen go and bring in 2 rookie or FA QBs to compete with Fitz and Tarvares Jackson. The best 3 stay and the best one starts opening day. One thing we shouldn't learn from the Seahawks is using flea flickers and fake punts while already up big against a non-playoff team, just wanting to get the season over with. When they need to use those plays later this season, they won't have them available and it will most likely cost them.
