Good reason to not let your kids play football
CookieG replied to Bubba Gump's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, I agree with the idea of letting them if they want to play. My oldest wanted to and went from flag to Pop Warner, junior high and 4 years of high school. He liked it and was pretty dedicated. He put on about 70 lbs, mostly muscle, during high school. But he also realized that most colleges don't use 240 lb offensive linemen and his body was maxed out bulk wise. He was a shy kid and I think football really helped build his confidence. My youngest...sigh. He would be the tackler in the video of the OP. I know because I coached my oldest's flag team for 2 years, and that's what my youngest would do if I put him in a practice scrimmage if we were short handed. It didn't matter to him that the other kids were 2-3 years older or that tackling wasn't allowed in flag football. I used to call him my LB in training. But he had no desire to play. In junior high, the coaches approached him repeatedly about joining. When he started high school, he told me the head coach trapped him on the first day and spent a 1/2 hour trying to convince him to join. I never pushed it. We had my oldest on a one concussion rule. If he got one, his career was over and he knew it. Luckily, he never got one. IDK, he had a friend that he played together with from flag football to high school. A very good kid with really nice parents. But the kid had 3 concussions that I knew of, plus a seizure disorder. The parents never stopped him from playing. His senior year, the coach cut him under some pretense, but my oldest said it was really out of a concern for his health. He ended up transferring to another school. -
DirecTv Sunday Ticket- Potential big issues
CookieG replied to Walking Tall's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe, maybe not. We pay a $7.00 per month local broadcast fee as a part of our Uverse bill, out of a monthly charge in excess of $130.00. And the local broadcast charge stays despite them taking away two of our local stations (Fox and NBC). ATT is losing subscribers at rate of about 1 million per quarter for DTV and Uverse. When I went to the ATT support boards, it is repleat with comments of how happy people had been with DTV until they were bought by ATT. Uverse has been declining for years. Its basically filled with informercials and multiple listings for one station. Give it a year or two and all you'll get is HBO and 24 hour Bugs Bunny stations. The local transmission fees are what ATT are telling everyone is the problem, but I really don't believe them. They've become a monster and not a good one at that. -
Cable TV Versus Everything Else

We still have a few days of Uverse left. We're going to try Playstation Vue, it seems to have the best channel lineup. We'll probably give Youtube Tv a try also. Its going to be $80 less per month plus we get the 2 local channels back that ATT won't pay for and the NFLN back. The ATT sponsored "support forums" are hilarious. They just blame everyone else and tell their subscribers to suck it up. It actually reminds me of when we dumped AOL for DSL in the 90's. When cancelling, AOL was asking "why are you leaving?" I could only respond, "idk, because service is 5 times faster, doesn't tie up your phone and is less than half the price." Ah, the memories. -
Bills Training Camp: Day 3 - 7/27
CookieG replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
/shrugs... He also had 4 90+ yard games out of his last 7 in the NFL, as a rookie. His deep ability, coupled with Brown's, isn't something you want to keep off the field very long. They draw away safeties, opening up underneath stuff and down the seams. If a DB bites even slightly on PA, one of those 2 are ready to pounce. He was easily the most pleasant surprise on O last year and brings a skill that can't be taught. Use him. -
Are you friends with your neighbors?
CookieG replied to Another Fan's topic in Off the Wall Archives
We know most of our immediate neighbors, those adjacent and across the street. Most are nice people. Its nothing like where I grew up though. Everyone knew everyone. Even today, I can go back to my mom's house and remember the name of everyone who lived on our street, five houses either way, everyone on the street behind us, 90% of those who lived on the street connected to the street behind us, and half of the people who lived on the street beyond that one. Hell, there was a mafia kingpin on the last street mentioned. We'd have a neighborhood block party every year with about 100-150 people who attended. Times were different in suburbia back in the60's and 70s -
Fiftieth Anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing
CookieG replied to SoTier's topic in Off the Wall Archives
A few of us went to see Apollo 11 tonight at the theater. During the lunar descent scene, I leaned over to my wife and said, "see, even Neil Armstrong drives with the Service Engine Soon light on and the gas gauge approaching E." -

Cable TV Versus Everything Else
CookieG replied to Formerly Allan in MD's topic in Off the Wall Archives
mmhmm... we're cutting the cord on Uverse at the end of the month. ATT has become brutal. Its almost as if they are deliberately driving people away. When they refused to pay for 2 of our local networks (NBC and Fox), it was pretty much the last straw. They've become a leviathan that acts like a third rate basement operation. Of course, when I've said that on their "uverse community" site, I got a warning...lol. One little 3rd world trick is in billing. We still pay a few of our bills via paper check and snail mail. With most, it has been fine. But with ATT, it has become a farce. The statement arrives usually on the 17th via mail, on the 16th via email. But the "statement date" is the 4th. The due date is the 26th. And when the check is mailed to their PO Box in Indiana, it takes forever to cash. Other bills mailed on the same day, both in state and out of state are invariably cashed first. With ATT, you have to mail the payment, literally on the same day, to have them cash it before the due date. If not, they add on another $10.00 to a late fee. We're going to try Youtube TV and see how it goes. 70 channels for $50.00. We'll get back the NFLN and local stations that way. That's about a third of what we're paying ATT. -
I've never looked to see if there was a McClusky Street, a McClusky Park or a McClusky statue in Buffalo. He certainly earned it. As to the movie trailer..meh..it doesn't need an Emmerlich trying to create more action. Taking down 4 carriers in a day is action enough. I'm boring...I've always appreciated something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w30FkSXyTE

Damn, that's a good list by Rolling Stone. The Who-Live at Leeds is probably right where it should be, in the top 5. I love the inclusion of Muddy Waters at Newport. Allman Brothers at Fillmore East would make it just on the strength of Whipping Post alone. If someone not on the list can make it on one song alone...Janis Joplin, Ball and Chain, Monterey .

Agreed. There's a place inthemiddleofnowhere, KS that does this type of thing. The crown jewel of the exhibits is the Apollo 13 CM. The also restored the Liberty Bell after it was hoisted from ocean's depths. There is some pre-Apollo things, a few rockets from the late 50's early 60's, a replica of a LEM, a moon rover, etc. They also have a decent planetarium, an IMAX, a science lab and lots of educational programs, including a number of space camps. Its a big field trip destination in KS. **Edit** I didn't realize...The Kansas Cosmosphere did the restoration work on the mission control center Cosmo.org

Mandatory retesting for driver's license
CookieG replied to RochesterRob's topic in Off the Wall Archives
When I was teaching my oldest to drive, one of the first times on the road, I was giving him the defensive driving lecture, watching out for other drivers doing stupid things. Sure enough, a guy coming the other way took a left hand turn in front of him...about 3-5 seconds after the turn arrow turned red. My son had to hit his brakes pretty good to avoid a crash. Afterward, he said, "OK, I get it." I could only say, "so endeth the lesson." -

Cable TV Versus Everything Else
CookieG replied to Formerly Allan in MD's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Uverse!!!!! For just $130 per month, our Uverse 300 package provides a wide range of infomercials and other paid programming! And when they cancelled the NFLN 2 weeks before the draft was just a smart move on their part. Seriously, those type of shows probably cover half of their channels now. Idk, we have a Roku TV, its OK, but there are probably a ton of apps I haven't added. Netflix is cheap. My oldest keeps telling us to get Youtube TV. Its $49 per month and looks like it has a decent channel selection. In terms of real channels, it probably provides as many as we're getting now. -
We're building the offense around the passing attack
CookieG replied to VW82's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't have any doubt they looked at pass protection first when signing players. Morse, Spain and Ford are all very good pass protectors. Spain was actually a pretty good run blocker when he started and Russ Grimm was the Titans OL coach. But Grimm retired and they went to a zone blocking scheme. He's not very good at reaching for players and diving for ankles. But he CAN move people. Not surprisingly, I think the Titans OL fell off as a whole when a new OL coach came in and they decided to change the blocking scheme. Another great NFL coaching move. I've watched Morse nearly weekly for most of his career with the Chiefs. Yeah, he's a very good pass blocker, but he's not a bad run blocker. He holds his own in the middle of the field and he can pull or get out in space. Remember, people thought the Chief's run game would fall off when Kareem Hunt was kicked off the team. It really didn't. The reason was the scheme and the talent on the OL. Morse was a big part of that. Oklahoma did have a good deal of ZBS in their game plan. But if you've ever watched Cody Ford cave in the right side of their line, he can understand that he's capable of moving people. There's nothing wrong with making pass pro a priority, but it doesn't mean the run game will suffer. It really should improve this year if these guys are used correctly. -

NFL Throwback: Top 10 Draft Classes of All Time

yeah, I received the Uverse announcement the other day when I tried to turn on NFLN. It was "an effort to cut costs" by Uverse, i.e. looking for a way to pay for the $85 billion purchase of Time Warner. This was of course, after they raised rates for Uverse, again. Uverse is down to half of its channels being paid programming or shopping channels. I can't get Sunday Ticket anyway due to line of sight issues. (Our trees, neighbors trees). When this happened, I read a few articles on the issue. Some made it sound like the NFL was looking more towards streaming Sunday Ticket. That might work. IDK..its time to become a cord cutter, I think, if I can find a service that gets my wife her OWN network.

9 Quinnen Williams IDL Alabama I still wanted Dillard at OT, but Q is one of the few I’d say “too good to pass up”. There are a few in the top 10 I wouldn’t say that about. 40 Chris Lindstrom IOL Boston College – consolation prize for not getting an OT in the 1st. Top 2-3 interior OL in the draft. He slips in at RG and the OL just got better. 74 Dawson Knox TE Mississippi A bit of a risk at 3, but I can live with that. The 4.5 speed and the 18 ypc are intriguing to say the least. 112 Justice Hill RB Oklahoma State – Successor to Shady..and he gets to hang with both Shady and Gore for a year to break into the league. Some pretty good bake to go along with a lot of shake, and stronger than his size indicates. He can live at TT’s house for a year and learn how to use that chip on his shoulder. 131 Emeke Egbule LB Houston The common adjective is “explosive”. He gets to learn the finer points of the game from Lorax. 147 Ben Burr-Kirven, Washington LB An All American LB who can play the run, the pass and pursue at no. 147…I’ll take it. Especially when he runs a 4.5, broad jumps 10 feet and does a sub 7 second cone. He’s short, but no shorter than Devin White, and right now, he’s a better tackler. 158 JordanBrailfordEDGE OklahomaState 10 sacks last year and around 15 tfls. He’s got great closing speed on the QB. One scout said he was the best defensive player at the Shrine Bowl. 181 Cody Thompson, WR Toledo His 40 time was pretty slow, but every other measurable is very good. Before he was injured in his junior year, he was averaging 20 ypc for his career. He was heading towards his second 1000+ yard season his junior year when he got hurt. Of course, he had a QB throwing to him then. He could be a tackle breaker in the slot. 225 Mitch Hyatt OT Clemson 3 year starter for the national championship team, who graded out at over 90 for the national championship game. We can probably find a spot for him somewhere. 228 Tim Harris CB Really hit with the injury bug in college but a very good athlete and very good player when healthy. More than worth the risk in the 7th.

The reality of what Beane is creating with the OL.
CookieG replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I have no problem in bringing in OL with attitude, in fact, I think its a good idea. They still need talent of course, because if not, you just have a mean guy who swings and misses most of the time. One of my favorite stories from the old days was when Conrad Dobler was brought in for the 1980 season. He was replacing future HOF Joe D, one of the toughest OL the Bills ever had. But what Dobler brought was attitude...it was summed up by the equipment manager of all people, while talking about jerseys and such: Bloodiest jersey – Conrad Dobler, 1980-1981“It has to be Conrad Dobler and often times it wasn’t his blood,” said Hojnowski. “Conrad told me one time because I had asked him. He said, ‘If I’m on your team I will do anything I can to keep my guy from getting to our quarterback.’ If I have to bite him, trip him, whatever.’” https://www.buffalobills.com/news/uniform-extremes-5098653 The thing was...he instilled that attitude in his fellow linemen, especially Ken Jones and Joe Devlin, the 2 talented OT. It was quite simple..."no one's getting to Fergie..we'll stop them by whatever means necessary." The Bills gave up something like 16 sacks that year and led the league in 3rd down percentage. Bring the talent, bring the attitude. -

do like the WWE used to do. Duke it out in a winner take all triple threat match. -
I don't think its asinine at all. -The Rams have had a really good DL for most of the decade, even before they got Donald. They had Long, Quinn, Brockers..then they added Donald on top of that. They were no more than a 7 win team until they got an offense, including the 3 years they had Donald before they developed an offense. -The Jets had two good DT's and then drafted Williams in 2015. And they've been...um...the Jets since then. -The Bills led the league in sacks 2 years in a row and in 2014, had over 17 sacks from the DT's. They couldn't earn a playoff spot. Hell, last year, they led the league in pass D and won a whopping 6 games. So the general question of offense over defense....it has merit. Especially when your offense was ranked 30th last year.

I've used the draftnetwork mock draft simulator a few times recently. Not sure how Q Williams keeps falling to 9, but he has been in that one. I could live with that.
