You get one player this offseason…who is it?
Nephilim17 replied to McBean's topic in The Stadium Wall
Matthews would, if I'm reading it correctly, cause Atlanta to take a $10 million cap hit (remaining signing bonus). And he's 31. If he could improve the left size and if Dawkins would move to guard, I'm all for getting an older but good player for Oliver. Would Atlanta eat that bonus to get younger? -
Regardless of whether the vid is a fake, when you're 6'4" and weight 225 lb. and you have a 40.5" vertical, that's scary.

I'm not a college fan or a tape guru, so just based on highlights (yes, I know) I'll take Hyatt to add some scary speed, YAC, and a more dangerous vertical game to this offense. -
Seems like you're implying Davis and Metcalf are pretty similar in terms of production. Davis' first three seasons total yards: 2020: 599 2021: 549 2022: 836 Metcalf's first four seasons total yards: 2019: 900 2020: 1303 2021: 967 2022: 1048 So you wanna talk yards per game and only count the games Davis started? Look at his season three: a bona fide starter with Josh Freakin' Allen throwing to him and he had 836 yards. Metcalof outproduced that in all four of his season and in his second pro season got 1303 yards, 467 yards more than Davis' full-time starter season three, or 56% more than Davis's best season. 56%. If Davis ever gets 1200 yards in one season for any team I will give $100 to the charity of your choice. I doubt he'll ever get 1000 yards but that's my offer to you. And nothing in return. Davis and Metcalf are not similar in the least in terms of production. I put my money where my mouth is.

Ok, his yards per catch dropped the last couple years but he still had over a 1,000 yards in 2022 with Gino Smith throwing to him. If we can get a 6'4" receiver with that speed and vertical, despite route limitations, I'll take it.

Round 1: Yes, for a top-10 pick, Oliver is disappointing. Not bad, but not anywhere near the consistent top-level play you expect for the pick. But... Rosseau could be a 10-12 sack player, and that's more than acceptable for his draft position, bottom 1st round. And he's good against the run and has upside with a short college career. Right now that pick is good and could get better. Elam had a decent year and I'd say that's a B grade, again, picking the bottom of the 1st round. Don't just say a player is a 1st-round player; the expectations for 9th overall and 23rd overall are far different. Round 2: Pretty bad. Epinesa fell for a reason and the Bills take him and then try to change him. Wrong on both counts. Basham was redundant and the failure is as well. However, Cook looks like he could be a solid pick if he continues his trajectory. So round one looks like two out of three successes and round two looks like one out of three. Not great but very mediocre and we need to do better if we're paying Allen $40 million a year.

I heard Beane got some bad intel that the NFL was going the way of the CFL with 12 men on the field. Since no one knows what the 12th guy does in the CFL, Beane got someone who doesn't do anything really well but is almost a lot of things in football.

Just looking at highlights (yes, I know) I love the Sanders tape. He can sniff out a play, hit hard, tackle for a loss. Yes, highlights but that two and a half minutes has more tackles for a loss than I remember Edmunds making his entire time here. And he's 6'5" so he's got the height the staff seemed to love about Edmunds. If we spent a third on a great linebacker, I'm ok. I really want the first two picks offense and at least one or two more in the top five.

That's freakish athleticism. I'd love to have one WR where the other team simply doesn't know how to contain him.

Bills sign S Zayne Anderson to a 2 year deal
Nephilim17 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
He just turned 26, he's 6'2", and has very good speed. Poyer and Hyde weren't stars before they came here, remember. People b**** about our coaching but it's pretty obvious MdDermott can coach secondary. Even if he's just special teams or a backup, I'm always good with checking out youngish guys with size and speed. -
Here's the article: https://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/2023/02/mike-evans-to-the-bills-for-gabe-davis-nfl-salary-cap-expert-serves-up-bills-offseason-hot-take.html " The 29-year-old has a projected market value of four years and $92 million for his next contract, according to spotrac.com. That comes out to about $23 million per year." I don't want two 30-plus receivers making $50 million a year for the next few years.

Indeed, once we get past the reanimation bit, the hair takes away the middle just like Edmunds height and wingspan. He'd be killer.

Khalil Shakir / answer for WR 2 / Makes Sports Illustrated
Nephilim17 replied to Figster's topic in The Stadium Wall
I wouldn't be thrilled with having two 6 foot nothing (and likely smaller) 190 lb receivers with decent but not great speed on both sides. Put Shakir in the slot and draft a traits guy for #2. -
Good. I have zero interest in paying a good but not great middle linebacker who doesn't blitz much or run with top TEs $18 or $20 million a year for 5 years. This means more money for the offense: line and weapons. Does anyone know if this can turn into a 3rd round compensation pick or something like that? If so, I'm all for the 3rd rounder.

Don't think "WR2" in the upcoming draft. Think WR1.
Nephilim17 replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall
If you can buy a superstar running back in free agency for about $11 or $12 million a year, why use a first rounder on a back? Use free agency for less expensive positions; use the draft for premium-pay positions. It's simple economics. -
Sean is not a bad coach, just a bad fit for this team and era
Nephilim17 replied to Billsflyer12's topic in The Stadium Wall
Regardless of whether McDermott is the right man to lead this team, my fear is that if we do hit on a good offensive coordinator (whether it's Dorsey or anyone else) any success there will lead to that guy leaving for a head coach position. So success is the goal but it will lead to constant long-term offensive turnover. yes, the same can happen with a D coordinator but that doesn't worry me nearly so much given how today's game is more offensively vital. -
Without a salary cap McDermott can get Pegula to spend $17 million a year on Edmunds, and it's the right move. But when you're paying Josh his money and there's a cap you need to make sacrifices and prioritize your needs with a very limited budget. To me, that $17 million is better spent on the O-line and draft capital is best spent on O-line and offensive weapons, with maybe a 4th rounder on a capable but unspectacular MLB. Would you rather use very limited cap resources to pay a linebacker $17 million to help stop the opponent's short passing game in the middle of the field — or protect our quarter of a billion dollar generational QB and give him weapons?
-
We've got that kind of player in Diggs; I'd like a mismatch player to complement Diggs. Especially someone to stretch the field so the safeties can't play low or bracket Diggs all the time.

Excluding QB, who has the better roster, Bills or Jets?
Nephilim17 replied to Ethan in Cleveland's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Jets had a great draft last year but let's seem them build our team with the same picks we had over the last few years. Be a lot closer. And throwing out QB is throwing out 90% of the acumen of management. -
If we resign Edmunds I'll root for him to succeed, of course, but I won't love the financials at $120 million over seven years. Here's why: Our cap situation is NOT a one-year 2023 challenge. With Josh's contract EVERY year will make it challenging to pay for a good O-line, offensive weapons, an effective D-line and corners needed in a passing league. I don't see an MLB as being a cornerstone or essential part of an effective defense in today's passing league. Does it help? Sure. But it's not essential. So paying Edmunds $17 million a year (120/7) means that money can't go elsewhere to another essential piece. Sure the cap will rise each year, but young guys in essential positions will need to be extended, and you can bet that over time certain players will want to renegotiate their deals. $17 million a year for Edmunds or $7 to $10 million for another MLB and $7 to $10 million EXTRA for the O-line. I'll go with the latter.

Defense Passing Game Coordinator John Butler
Nephilim17 replied to Buffalo_Stampede's topic in The Stadium Wall
Maybe Butler read the memo wrong and he's trying to help the other teams pass on us. 🤔 -
Sorry, OP, but what should Beane "learn" from the Miller deal? Don't sign older free agents because they have a greater chance of injury? Miller is a 1st ballot hall of famer and an outlier and can't be compared to 95% or more of other players his age. If he doesn't get hurt, maybe we're still playing now. Beane's made a lot of mistakes (mostly top end of the draft) but I don't see Miller as one.
