Elijah Moore could be a deep threat, Curtis Samuel could do it, hell Josh Palmer has the separation numbers for it as well. The problem is that it's not prioritized as a need. I disagreed with folks on this earlier this season, but I think it's becoming undeniable: The offensive scheme is built around trying to keep the Bills' defense off the field. Since we have Allen it works and it's really efficient. Frankly I think that's nuts considering our defensive HC. It feels a lot like we're using our strength to cover up our weaknesses, instead of bolstering our strengths to overcome them.

A Few Thoughts about the Pats Game - Post yours as well
Bruffalo replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
What you’ve said is true, but I don’t think it really negates the idea that bias from the referees has a significant impact on football games. Im too lazy to link it right now, but I saw a thesis paper earlier this year that showed how the Chiefs had statistically significant help from the referees during the regular season over Mahomes career. Tonight should have been a blowout, and it was artificially kept close by the referees. It’s wild to handwave it all away when the Bills consistently perform worse and have way more penalties called on them when Hochuli is the referee. Not saying it’s the only reason they lost, the passing defense was atrocious, but to pretend that those calls Sunday night were spread between the teams evenly and with the same impact is just silly. -

Pretty flawed comparison when the Refs gifted the Chiefs with 14 points to keep it competitive. -
We’ve seen what a stalwart leader Terry is with the Sabres. The further away he is from football operations the better

The Worthy Trade Keeps Looking Worse and Worse
Bruffalo replied to Bills Costa Rica's topic in The Stadium Wall
Likely a overblown story, McD is so bad at this kind of media stuff when he’s cagey. I bet he was late to a meeting or something stupid. -
I don’t see how the Bills would trade for a CB. The only way it makes sense is if Hairston is out for the season. Olave makes a lot of sense to me.

It’s suspicious that 3 of the Bills “signature losses” have had the same refs. This game, the Philly game in 2023, the divisional game against the chiefs in Buffalo. You can throw in the 2018 loss to the Dolphins if you want too (Charles Clay endzone drop to seal the game).

There's an outlier year in 2023 but since 2018 he's regularly been in the top 3 crews for penalties called. I haven't looked how those penalties are distributed by team but it'd probably be interesting. EDIT: Okay so I looked at the distribution of penalties year by year and any time the Bills have had the misfortune of getting Hochuli they've been a top team in penalties called and yards lost. Interestingly the Patriots are high in the penalties called category but considering their 6-3 record I'd imagine they're less impactful moments of games.

I couldn't help but yell at the TV during this one. Absolutely ridiculous that Butte didn't get flagged after Shakir did.

Thanks for that. I don't have a subscription so I can't see anything besides the headline, but it's good to know that I'm not the only one seeing a trend there!

It matches what I looked up when I looked at each Bills/Hochuli game individually. I haven't taken the time to look at other referee groups and Allen's win percentages but I'll bet the Hochuli crew is a huge outlier.
-
Just to further my point: In the games Hochuli has been the referee for the Bills, he's called: -11 penalties in 2025 in 1 game. -11 penalties in 2023 in 1 game. (Philly Game) -5 in the divisional round of the playoffs in 2023 -6 penalties in 2022. This is the only game we won. -10 in 2018 opener. -13 in 2018 against Miami. The Bills average penalties per game between 2018-2025 is about 5.5-6.5. So we're seeing something way off the norm. It's anomalous for sure.

Allen is 1-5 when Hochuli is officiating. A 16% winrate when a certain referee is running your game seems suspect. Especially when you have a league wide win rate of just about 70%. Not a single holding call on the Patriots all night. Just throwing that out there. Definitely not the only reason we lost, but a contributing factor when you look at all the ticky tack penalties that easily could have gone uncalled. EDIT: I just realized that the 6-0 part about the Patriots is incorrect. They're 6-3. Still a damning juxtaposition considering they have been garbage for the last 4 seasons.

He was. Not shocking at all, honestly. -

Just another fun wrinkle to think about: -Allen is 1-6 when Hochuli's crew is officiating. -In the same timeframe, the Patriots are 6-0. So Allen has a 16% winrate with that crew, but a 70% winrate overall. The Patriots have been dogwater since 2020, but have a 100% winrate when he's the ref. Not the only reason we lost, but definitely a contributing factor.
