This wouldn't shock me. The Pats could've gotten a second round pick for Jimmy G. from any number of teams. I'm sure when trading a QB with talent Belichick most likely ruled out first AFCE, then ruled out AFC. After that he may very well have looked at the NFC west with Seattle, L.A. and Arizona thinking that San Fran would have tough sledding for the foreseeable future and determined that would be a good landing spot for Garoppolo. Least likely spot for the trade to come back and bite him in the a**.

Normally there would be no reason to create a smokescreen if you have the #1 pick and aren't going to pick again for another 32 picks. When you have #1 and #4 I think you want to cause as much confusion and chaos at the top of the draft as you can.

Did you ever drive by a pick-up for sale on the side of the road and decide to stop and check it out? When you pull up to look at it the sign in the window has a price that's way more than you were thinking the truck is worth. Just because something has a for sale sign in the window doesn't necessarily mean it will be sold. Denver may be thinking we'll either stay put and potentially take QB or ask for a ton of draft capital for our pick. Either way they win.

I think these 2 scenarios are quite different. In '85 the Bills knew they were probably gonna have Kelly at some point in the not too distant future. This would be like the Bills knowing that Mahomes was gonna play in Kansas City for the next two years and then be available to them (maybe not the best example but off of the top of my head). It makes drafting a QB way less of a priority.
