If they release him they take a 15 million dollar cap hit, and lose the chance to move him for a pick (even if its 7th rounder) in the offseason when his cap hit goes to 0. Meanwhile, they can work through legalities to see if they can save the cap hit by saying he voided his contract by conduct detrimental to the team. Gotta disagree with you here. If you spend a half a year in an offense, are already in the building and they want to pay you to be the starter I think you re-up immediately. Good options usually already have starting Quarterbacks.

They get Trubisky in for a half of the season to see if he can be their #1 next year. The draft is incredibly weak at QB, and RIvera's 3rd year is coming up.
