Should Barkley be the holder on kicks?
oldmanfan replied to Albany,n.y.'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Now I know I’m getting older and my memory can get hazy, but two things come to mind here: 1. Has Barkley ever held for kicks? 2. The stuff about him getting hurt etc.? Go back and watch the comeback game. Christie’s holder wore # 14. Fellow named Reich. The starting QB that day. Concerns about a holder getting hurt seems overblown at minimum. -
I think anywhere from 8-8 to 10-6, and by the way I agree completely with your opinions in the two other big threads today. I think a team that will fall back includes the Rams. People will start figuring out MacVay.

Best thing the team did in the offseason was bring in so many O linemen and bring in a competent O line coach to teach them.

I don’t get upset by negative preseason stuff and I don’t get all excited by positive preseason stuff. No one knows what’s going to happen - every year teams that are supposed to stink do well and vice versa.

The Most Memorable Season Openers in Bills History
oldmanfan replied to Phil The Thrill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The best football game I have every been to live was the ‘74 opening game, Monday night against the Raiders. The most exciting and emotional game was the ‘80 opener when after an entire decade of futility we finally squished the Fish. -

Jared Goff New Contract Largest Guaranteed Ever
oldmanfan replied to aristocrat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Interesting. If they want to throw that kind of money at this kid, good for him. But my question is whether he's good enough to merit that once teams start to plan against McVay's schemes. You saw evidence of that in the Super Bowl when Belicheat shut them down. My gut is that the Rams will come back to earth a bit; I'm not convinced McVay is that much of a genius compared to the rest of the league. And with this contact and Donald's the Rams better win now or they will run into cap considerations and have to let some talent go in the upcoming years. -

Thurman killed it here. Allen is important but not the sole piece. And Allen is going to make mistakes this season. So is Darnold. So is Mayfield. So is Murray. And so on. Why? Because they are very young QBs figuring it out. An NFL QB may be the most important single position to lay in sports, and it might also be the single most difficult to learn. So not every decision will be perfect, not every throw will be perfect, and yet as sure as death and taxes fans of these different teams will harp on every single mistake as if it is definitive proof that (insert young QB's name here) will never make it in the league. You know who else will make mistakes this coming season? Brady. Rogers. Brees. Will they make as many as the young guys? Not nearly as many. Why? Because they've learned. So will the young guys if given time. Coach Boone was right: let the boys play. -
Make sure you keep the guys on the roster now that you definitely want to stay, even if it's a year early. Poyer, White, Hyde, Milano would be priorities. Then decide which of the O linemen proved it on their short deals and extend them; very hard to find quality O linemen these days. Then look at a WR or pass rusher to target.

THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - Let the Games Begin
oldmanfan replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As always a nice Shaw column. It should be an interesting season, with young guys developing on both sides of the ball, and some vets around to help led the way. People are going to be focused on Allen as the QB, and I only hope folks realize young second year QBs are still going to make mistakes. As many as last year? One hopes not as development occurs. Still, my one wish for the season and the board is that we do not fall into nitpicking every throw Allen makes, or every cutback Singletary makes of every missed tackle of Edmunds as if it means they're a bust, or every great play each makes meaning they are HOFers. They're young, the team although spiked with veterans in some areas is still somewhat young at key spots. Let's look at the totality of things as we go forward. -
My daughter is moving to Orlando in October. Do we have a Bills Backer chapter?

Frank Gore - great mentor for Singletary
oldmanfan replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Gore beat him out for the veteran role. Simple. Hope Shady does well in KC, no ill will towards him at all. Hope he does great until we beat him in the AFC championship game. -
One could argue they should have traded him last year.
-
Why did we keep him all offseason? Because Beane and McD felt he’d be a big part of the equation. Then Singletary and Gore came on strong. ?
-
$$$$. Teams knew they could get him for less if he got released. Plus if any team thought he was still that good and their clear answer they would have made the trade and paid him 6 million. Seems like folks including the Bills see him as a complementary piece at this point in his career and not worth the bigger dollar.

Deon Lacy- Claimed by Dolphins

A small fraction of guys seem to have been claimed thus far. It speaks favorably that talent we had to let go gets picked up quickly. -

It is a good thing that our cuts get signed elsewhere. Speaks to the talent we have.
