Sports - Bob Chandler's bio: Violent Sundays is pretty incredible C.S. Lewis is a favorite of mine. Out of the Silent Planet is brilliant. Robert A. Heinein - Stranger in a Strange Land Jonathan Swift - Gulliver's Travels, particularly Part IV. Most people think Gulliver went to one place filled with little people. If that were true, it would be Gulliver's Travel. Isaac Asimov - I challenge you to read the entire "robot, foundation and empire" series, written over a few decades, NOT intended as a somewhat linked future history when written. FORGET the movie "I, Robot" !!! It was an OK movie that almost nothing to do with Asimov's robots. In fact the premise directly contradicted his robot philosophy. Note that in the following list, three books were three written by other authors, with permission. In the Author's Note at the beginning of Prelude to Foundation, Asimov says: "In any case, the situation has become sufficiently complicated for me to feel that the readers might welcome a kind of guide to the series, since they were not written in the order in which (perhaps) they should be read. "The fourteen books, all published by Doubleday, offer a kind of history of the future, which is, perhaps, not completely consistent, since I did not plan consistency to begin with. The chronological order of the books, in terms of future history (and not of publication date), is as follows: "1. The Complete Robot (1982). This is a collection of thirty-one robot short stories published between 1940 and 1976 and includes every story in my earlier collection, I, Robot (1950). Only one robot short story has been written since that collection appeared. That is Robot Dreams, which has not yet appeared in any Doubleday collection. [Robot Dreams (1986) does contain it; see also Robot Visions (1990)] "2. The Caves of Steel (1954). This is the first of my robot novels. "3. The Naked Sun (1957). The second robot novel. "4. The Robots of Dawn (1983). The third robot novel. "5. Robots and Empire (1985). The fourth robot novel. "6. The Currents of Space (1952). This is the first of my Empire novels. "7. The Stars, Like Dust-- (1951). The second Empire novel. "8. Pebble in the Sky (1950). The third Empire novel. "9. Prelude to Foundation (1988). This is the first Foundation novel (although it is the latest written, so far). [9a. Forward the Foundation (1993).] [9b. Foundation's Fear (1997).] The first novel in the Second Foundation Trilogy, it was written by Gregory Benford. Takes place after the first chapter of Forward the Foundation. [9c. Foundation and Chaos (1998).] The second novel in the Second Foundation Trilogy, written by Greg Bear. Takes place at the approximate time of Hari Seldon's trial. [9d. Foundation's Triumph (previously titled Third Foundation and Secret Foundation) (1999).] The third novel in the Second Foundation Trilogy, written by David Brin. "10. Foundation (1951). The second Foundation novel. Actually, it is a collection of four stories, originally published between 1942 and 1944, plus an introductory section written for the book in 1949. "11. Foundation and Empire (1952). The third Foundation novel, made up of two stories, originally published in 1945. "12. Second Foundation (1953). The fourth Foundation novel, made up of two stories, originally published in 1948 and 1949. "13. Foundation's Edge (1982). The fifth Foundation novel. "14. Foundation and Earth (1983). The sixth Foundation novel."

Impossible to answer which is my favorite, but I probably watched the Wizard of Oz the most times. It was an annual ritual when I was a kid.

TBD Tailgate - who's planning on being there
rockpile replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in TBD Annual Tailgate (TBDAHOT)'s Topics
The Rockpile crew of four will be there Sunday by 7-730 am. By the time we would get to Hammer's / Danny's on Saturday, everyone would probably be heading to other parties or back to their hotels anyway. First time we have not come up Saturday night in at least 6-7 years! I am just happy to be able to see you all again, and the game too, heh. -
Too soon to project anything beyond starting time for Sunday's game. I agree it was a great start, but Buffalo went 5-0 not that long ago and finished with a season that made me want to vomit. The Bills have to FORGET last week, and IGNORE next week. There is only the Raiders game. Everything else is a distraction. I am not going to have any expectations this year. I am not going to have any expectations this year. I am not going to have any expectations this year. I am not going to have any expectations this year. I am not going to have any expectations this year. I am not going to have any expectations this year. ........Go Bills!

The attendance at yesterday's opener
rockpile replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hope so. I want the Bills to stay "under the radar" for as long as they can. I am surprised, simply because the season opener is when fans of almost any team can have "high hopes" and have that new season football feeling at a peak. Also, the Chiefs are traditionally viewed as being on the short list of "best fans". It was hard to see from a panoramic view if there were fans in red shirts in the seats or empty red seats. <grin> If I was a Chiefs fain, I would have left at the end of the third quarter. At halftime they were not out of the game! -
A Few Thoughts About The Game
rockpile replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hi, Bill! Great opening to the season. I enjoyed the hell out of it, and have to take a 'bye' on using this to predict the season. I really hope they can play with the same intensity in the home opener. Yes, I will be there. Today the Bills looked like a professional football team. woo-hoo! -

TBD Tailgate - who's planning on being there
rockpile replied to JÂy RÛßeÒ's topic in TBD Annual Tailgate (TBDAHOT)'s Topics
We will be there - 4 of us anyway. Hopefully Saturday night AND Sunday. Me and the a couple others (rest of group is Kalene, future son-in-law Jamie, and wife Yvonne) have to work Saturday! I do not get out until 7 pm so hopefully someone will still be at Danny's! Just got decent seats in section 335, row 21 You cannot find a friendlier tailgate! Who is R. Rich? -
Add him to the list of names you will recognize as playing very well for other teams after they left Buffalo.

I sat with my father during his last several hours battling cancer. That was over a decade ago. I know he found some peace knowing he was not alone when he "left". As others have expressed so well, my sincere wish for peace now for you and your family. Be well, Tom -
Tickets for the home opener/TBD Tailgate XII

One for sure, might need a couple more if available, but cannot commit. Family is preparing for Kalene's (formerly Pebbles) wedding two weeks after the home opener. -
Will the Veteran FA QB the Bills sign this week
rockpile replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well said. The coaches need to NOT listen to the fans. I think it should be Fitz's job to keep or lose. The revolving door in the huddle HAS to stop now. As far as the inane and brief call for Reich to replace Kelly, that was mostly after Reich led the Bills 4-0 after Kelly had his ass "handed" to him, and Jimbo lost his first game when he returned. There was never really a controversy like some of the others mentioned. If there was a HOF position for backup QB, Reich would be a first rounder. -

As long as they remember to keep the "Dark" in Dark Knight, the Batman legend will be interesting.

Question about 70's Bills pre-season game
rockpile replied to Lord Chinfist's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I did not go to the game (was traveling by backpack that year) but my brother had season tickets, and years later he gave me his coin and ticket stub. I think the first game I saw at Rich Stadium was a victory over the Redskins. Theismann was hurt, just enough to have the officials call time out, so he had to sit out for one play before returning. On the next play his backup (whoever it was) took the snap but illegal motion was called so they had a "do-over". Theismann figured he had sat out his mandatory "one play" and came back in. No one said anything until a Bills coach on the sidelines went nuts and was screaming at the officials. Flag goes up - penalty on the Redskins! The illegal motion was a non-play, so Theismann returned without actually sitting out a play. Lots of fun! -
Supporting cast: 28th I made that up.
