Belief in the Team vs Help from a Trade
billsfan89 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I remember in 2007 the Giants made no significant moves during the offseason, all the commentators were poking fun at them because they had an OK team but needed some talent and they had the cap space to make some acquisitions. A commentator (not sure who but it was on Fox) said the lack of offseason acquisitions might not always be a bad thing, it could be a sign that the coaches on the roster like what they have. The Giants would go on to win the Super Bowl. So while I am dissatisfied with the lack of trading for a one tech, the coaching staff looking at the roster and liking it is not a bad thing necessarily. -
What would it take for you to trade Josh?
billsfan89 replied to elijah's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Mahomes would be the only player I would trade Josh for. Now I do think that Wilson, Rodgers and one of two other QB's might be better but I think that if I am designing a fit for this system and environment only Mahomes is over Josh. -
Look for Bills to stay aggressive on D...per Poyer quote

I was very impressed by McVay in the Rams game, they did get a lucky call to get that BS Int but the Bills got a call at the end too. I think the Bills need to recieve the ball to start games and hope the offense can put up 7 to set the pace favorably 0n defense. -

The Bills defense is almost designed to stop a one dimensional passing attack. The team has a good pass rush when it isn't being run on, the secondary is good and the team can blitz with Poyer and Edumonds (and apparently Klein) from the second level. The Bills offense scoring on the first two drives and the Carson injury forced Seattle to be one dimensional and that feed into the Bills strenghts. It was a truly great match up for the Bills. Hopefully the gameflow goes similar against AZ. -
In the modern era TKO is a great one but he also flamed out pretty quickly. He was great in 03 and 04 but then got seriously hurt in 05 and although he came back in 06 he was a step slower that year and by 07 he was out of Buffalo. So his acquisition only really was for 2 high end seasons and one OK season. Mario was kind of the same way. An OK 2012 and then two great years in 2013 and 2014 followed by a flame out in 2015 and then gone. Paup was another short lived signing great year one but then just two solid years before he left. If I am looking at the best acquisitions in terms of longevity and impact I could be making a case for Hyde and Poyer. They have been anchoring the safety positions for the past 4 seasons at a Pro Bowl or near Pro Bowl level and they probably will be the starting safety combo next season and possibly 2022. Even if they just give the team one more good season that's 5 years of anchoring the back end of the secondary and for most of that time they were under market rate (Poyer only just now on a market level extension.) The only other free agency acquisition that gave this team 5 years of good play is London Fletcher. But Poyer and Hyde could be looking at 6 years if they play two more seasons. In terms of trades Huges is an all time great one both in terms of peak value and longevity of production.

I have no issue with the Bills drafting a TE high, trading for an established player at TE or signing one in free agency. However I do think that the Bills already have a dynamic passing attack without a dynamic TE. Diggs is a true WR1, Brown a very good WR2, Beasley one of the best slot WR's in the league, Davis a quality WR4 who can take over for Brown in a year or two, two RB's that catch out of the backfield, Mac who can make some plays as a gadget player and a combo at TE that fills in to complement in Knox and Kroft. Obviously a great TE will help things even more but in football with the cap and limited draft choices you have to make cuts somewhere and I think I would prioritize retaining the O-line talent (Ty, D.Williams, Mongo and adding more guard depth), resigning Milano to a reasonable deal and adding more to the defense via the draft over getting a blockbuster TE which would be expensive either requiring a high draft pick and or an expensive salary, tying up resources in a position that might not be fully needed. As far as Knox I am a believer that he was over drafted by the Bills. He possess the physical tools to be a dynamic player but he hardly played in college. Just because he was drafted in round 3 doesn't make him more ready to play at the NFL level. I think that regardless of where a player is drafted you take a look at them as an individual prospect. Right now he is a backup caliber TE on the fringes of being a lower end starter. I think the Bills need to focus on getting an upgrade to Kroft as a vet TE and then have Knox play more dynamically and go into year 4 ready to be the starter. -
I know they are interested in turning a profit but they are also interested in pushing a right leaning political agenda. Considering that their business model is basically running local TV stations that model is running into issues and it is only going to get worse as their audience ages out. But considering that they like pushing that agenda they will hang onto that market longer than most other business interests would have.

I don't think this offense needs an elite TE. But it would be a nice add. Knox I still think can pan out but he is at the very least two years away and probably would be better served as a backup for 2021 so that he can come along at this own pace. Kroft is a very good backup or a fringe starter, for now he is a solid complementary piece but longer term I don't see him being the solution. Sweeney is a fringe backup and Lee Smith is an antiquated specialist who I think will be a cap casualty. Ideally I would cut Lee Smith, and try to find a better vet TE to complement Knox. I also think the offense could use a speed back in the vein of Darren Sproles to help add some speed to the offense. My ideal off-season to reload this team would simply be to retain as much of the O-line talent as possible (Resigning Ty, Williams, Mongo, and sign another vet guard to be off the bench) and improving the TE position. Then on defense resign Milano to a one year deal and spend most of the draft picks on the defensive side of the ball. -
I don't think anyone can force a team to fire someone. I think if you want to hire a coach you are going to hire them regardless of whomever might get extra picks. If you think Bieniemy is a genius offensive mind are you really going to not hire him and hire someone lesser because another team is going to get draft picks? I do think the incentives should be adjusted to the team doing the hiring getting extra picks but I don't see this moving the needle too much in either direction.

I love everything about Diggs, he really was that last elite piece needed to have everything fall right in place for the offense. -
The Slide (Stefon Diggs): smart move?
billsfan89 replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Marvin Harrison fell off a cliff in 2007 due to a knee injury at age 35. The year before at age 34 he 95 passes for 1300+ yards and 12 TD's. If Diggs can be as productive as he is now until age 34 I will gladly take that. Harrison is a pretty solid comparison to Diggs in some aspects. Both players are very smooth and shifty and have great hands. -
The Fitz 2011 comparisons are very flawed. The Bills bought high right before the stock dropped. But Josh is a blue chip prospect who has improved every single year. The Bills are also under zero pressure to extend Josh right now. Let him play out the back 7 games and get a full picture before you land on a final number.
-
Josh has 2 years (including the 5th year option) remaining on his contract. Considering the 2021 possible cap crunch. I would make sense to extend him after 2021 where the team can spread out some of his money by putting some on the front end increasing his 5th year option cap number 8-10 million to ease the cap number a bit when the main extension comes in. Either way I am happy to just have what appears to be a franchise QB.

The basic cable business model is evolving and ESPN has been getting caught in that for the last five years or so. The content they produce that gets big ratings (NFL and other mainstream live sports like the MLB and NBA) costs an arm and a leg and is at best a net neutral. Some of their fees aren't paying off as expected either. The content they produce that was hugely profitable (Sportscenter and other commentary shows) aren't getting the ratings and generating the profit margin they used to. ESPN's modern profit model in the 2000's and early 2010's was to sort of break even on the live sports broadcast but then make money on showing highlights and talking head shows which were cheap to produce but generated solid ratings. But Youtube and the internet have disrupted that. People still watch the live games but they tune out of the highlights since they can just watch them on Youtube or get other commentary on Youtube. ESPN is going to have to adjust their business model. They no longer can use the live sports as a loss leader and make money off of commentary. ESPN has tried to adjust with ESPN+ and putting up a lot of content on Youtube but there is just too big of a shortfall sadly.

If Trump loses and refuses to leave
billsfan89 replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Pretty much hoping that at all positions within the government he will have people in there willing to do his bidding. -
Who is giving a good but not great injury prone LB a huge deal when there is a possible cap crunch? Overall I would say that the two sides will meet at a one year "prove it" deal. It is beneficial for Milano to stay in a system that makes him look good and hopefully rebuild his value by staying healthy and hit the market when the cap is much higher. The Bills keep Milano in the fold for another year for a modest price and can give him one last full assessment.
-
Both sides are going to take a one year "prove it" deal. The cap could be 175 million and that could put the Bills right up against the cap, even if the cap is set significantly higher at 195 million the Bills still want to maximize their window to win and getting a good starter who is injury prone back on a one year deal suits their needs. Milano is hoping for that big contract but given that the cap will be deflated and he will be coming off of an injury prone season it makes sense for him to take a one year modest deal to build his value backup and hit the market when the cap is going to be well over 200 million most likely. I think most likely Milano will take a one year 5 million dollar deal. A big windfall and raise for him, but a low commitment for the Bills.

If Trump loses and refuses to leave
billsfan89 replied to Kemp's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Recounts don't really move margins, they just re-input the votes that exist. At best you get a few hundred votes changing. The Bush v Gore recount was for a margin of 537 votes. The Margins in PA, MI, GA, and WI are 10k or more. Trump is going to have to do more than recounts to have any legal path to victory and so far he has provided little recourse as to what he can legally challenge. Even if he gets ballots that came in after the election (but postmarked before the election) thrown out the margins will likely not close in any of these states enough to come even close. The dude lost and is throwing a B word fit -

In the North East everyone knew Trump was a loser business wise by the early 2000's. Everyone had know someone who got stiffed by Trump in the 80's or 90's, doing contract work they never got paid for. It was the Apprentice that saved him and carved him a new reputation in middle America sadly. -
I think this game is critical for the division. The Fins have a very soft schedule coming up. Chargers, Broncos, Jets and Bengals. They could easily go 3-1 before they hit a likely loss to the Chiefs. If the Bills can get the win over AZ they would go to 8-2 and get to a badly needed bye week. Then the Bills hit two very winable games against the Chargers and a banged up 49ers team. So the Bills have to win out the next 3 games and hope the Fins drop one of the next four. That would give the Bills a 2 game lead going into the back 4 games of the season and considering the Fins play the Chiefs the same week the Bills play the Steelers it would likely result in the Bills even if the drop the Steelers game having a 2 game lead with 3 games left and the Bills play the Broncos and Pats going into the last fins game. Overall I think this team can survive losing to AZ but a win going into the bye maintains the Bills 1.5 game lead and gets the Bills rolling into the back 6 rested, more healthy and in position to take the division.

Josh Was Hurt... Theory Inside
billsfan89 replied to DeltaDigital's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Josh had a dam fine game against the Jets they just got some bad calls and made some mistakes in the redzone that led to them piling up huge yardage but kicking a bunch of field goals. Against the Pats Josh stuck to the gameplan and ran the ball down the Pats throat. Josh got rocked against a different gameplan against the Titans and against the Chiefs he did OK but there were limited posessions.
