Your issue is easy to understand. The problem is that if you don’t go get a QB you are locked into perennial mediocrity at best. The league has so set the rules in favor of the air game that it is hard to win consistently without a franchise QB.

Calling Wertz, Goff and Watson great is also a stretch at this point. It’s very early in their careers.

Exactly^^^^ Teams may occasionally win, even SB’s, with a very strong defense but they generally do so for a year or two. The league has created a dynamic such that having the right QB is a necessity to win consistently over time. When is the last time the Pastsies had a “stud” on D? It’s been a while. Over their dynasty run you think mostly about offense and QB not about defense.

The suggestion that the Giants might take a RB or OG at #2 seems insane. They would be wise to trade down even a few places and grab another pick if they are looking to do this.

The problem with your analysis is that the probability of picking a franchise QB after the top of the first round and then into later rounds drops precipitously. It is amazing that the single most important position in the league is such a crap shoot. I’ve long said that if the league truly wants to be competitive that every team should have to carry a developmental QB on its roster. You could then make it even more interesting if you had them become FA’s at the three year point. I suppose you could say that this is no different than backup QB’s but those guys get buried and don’t seem to move much.
