Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?
Thurman#1 replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well, that is certainly one opinion. Not a fact, though. You're right that he won't be top 20 by the end of week 3. Best guess is he will be top 30 - 40, though, which equates to, oh yeah, a borderline number one. Has a lot to prove? Hey, yeah, no argument there. I mean, he's a second-year guy, so of course. But it's fair. Consistency isn't there for anybody, when it comes to receivers, outside a few true #1s. Numbers go up and down, but when uninjured, his aggregate performance was about borderline #1 level, I'd argue. After his first three games as a rookie, he started to find his footing. And from that point on until he got injured, he was putting up numbers that would have got him close to a thousand, and that's terrific as a rookie. Especially in an attack where the keywords are that everybody eats. Looking good again this year. -

Many of the comments here extend what has been a Bills fan issue for as long as I’ve been a fan (66 years). There has always been a kind of pesssimistic fear about the fortunes of the team. Even when we were doing great in the Super Bowl years there was a Chicken Littleness in the minds of some. We don’t have a passing problem, what we have are two things: an offensive coordinator that has put together a truly balanced offense, and an all-world QB that has matured in his approach to the game. Brady runs what he thinks will work; the last two games defenses have been susceptible to the run so he beat them over the head with it. If and when they are more susceptible to the pass I fully expect us to attack that way. Josh has matured into the type of QB that will take the easy yards vs. try and force the ball downfield. He doesn’t have to worry about force feeding Diggs anymore, and uses the everyone eats philosophy to success. I suspect at the end of week 3 we will be among the top rated offenses in the league. Good for them. -

Wow. Felt like he was out there a lot but never would think Bosa would get that many snaps, even in playoffs -

With a win in Miami later this season, the all-time rivalry record (including playoffs) will stand at 62-62-1. Those of us who lived through the '70s have been rewarded handsomely since then. -
It was a horrendous miss but Prater has been incredible making all the rest and all extra points. An established vet that didn’t let the terrible miss get in his head as he iced the game

I just want to say that the Bill's overall defensive strategy was basically similar to what we always do. Make them drive the field. Try to get pressure. Keep everything in front of you and count on the dolphins making mistakes. This is similar to what we do almost every time we play them. Frankly, aside from keeping the score close longer than it should have, it basically worked i- though he played better than usual....old Tua made a mistake in the end. I thought Tua played great prior to this. Offense played pretty damn good. I don't have any big complaints apart from a few miscues that caused those few stalled drives. The missed field goal was unfortunate. Again, the offensive philosophy was not to light them up and go deep all the time. Low risk ball control. Don't generate turnovers. This worked. The difference in this game is we probably should have won 38 to 14. How would folks feel if the score was that? I'm not going to complain too much apart from it was a little bit more stressful than it should have been. -

Trey has always given a big cushion or had problems when playing soft coverage. My thought is this is scheme. I didn't think he looked that slow. In fact, he had an up and down game and played very well versus the run and on a few other coverage events I didn't think he played that bad overall. We're just going to still assume Tyreek Hill is the fastest guy in the league. I mean everybody has trouble covering him. Waddel is fast too. Miami has a tough wide receiver core, especially when two is getting the ball out quickly without effect from the pressure and effect on his timing. That was the core problem with the day. -
why give everyone the ball on the 35 when very few would get there on the return?

Yes, thank you. As a courtesy to others I try to read before I post. Two of the best and fastest WRs in the NFL combined for 88 yards and an 8.8 YPC. White played his first 100% snaps game this year and had a tackle for a loss and a pass defensed. Not only did White play well, he played better than Benford. -

Wanted to ask about Kenneth Grant and didn't know if it deserves starting a new thread, sorry mods if I should've. Anybody noticed his play yesterday? Many TBD posters wanted him for Bills and he surprisingly went to Miami at 13. I read Dolphins forum before the game and they were disappointed, apparently he didn't do much the first two games. I never pay attention to opponent's defense while watching live but I guess he didn't do much in this one too since I don't remember hearing his name and we run a ton on them (and run stopping was supposed to be his strength). -

He had one great vintage Tre play in the first half when he knocked down a pass but other than that Tre was often well out of position and slow. It may not have been a problem had we gotten any semblance of a pass rush but Tua had all day to throw. What really infuriates me is the glacier like slowness that the Bills make adjustments on defense. No changes to the pass rush, no changes to the coverages. Tua looked really comfortable in making his reads like he was in practice. I really dont get zone coverage when each member of the zone defense is so far off the ball (and so slow) that they cannot make get a finger on the targeted receiver. I noticed that Babbich at least attempted to get more men right to the line to jam the receivers on some plays later on the game after that ridiculously easy 2nd Miami TD but due to the slowness of the Bills Dbs, they often got left in the dust. -

Yeah, I felt those late first half timeouts were really arrogant and enabled the TD over the field goal. Miami was methodically moving the ball in a one score game and that entire sequence gave them momentum and a chip for their shoulder. -

If the drives you see are the ones that have a Cook first down run for no gain, you've got a perception problem. A quick look at the box scores shows that the final first down of each failed drive looks like this. In the Baltimore game there were four drives that ended with punts. Here's what the final first down of each drive looked like: 9 yard Cook run Incomplete pass 2 yard Davis run Incomplete pass In the Jets game, there were three of those, not counting kneeldowns. Allen sacked -1 yard Davis run 4 yard Davis run In the Dolphins game there were three drives that didn't result in scores. But the first was a missed FG. I'll include it anyway. 2 yard pass 1 yard Cook run Incomplete pass So, that's a perception problem. Our stalled drives had a real mix of first down play results, specifically three incomplete passes, a completed short pass, a sack, two successful runs of nine and four yards respectively. And three unsuccessful runs of two yards or less. More attempted passes than unsuccessful runs. -
At least we have two rookies contributing. Walker looks good for a rookie. That pad is still completed without the pick.

Saw Epenesa shoving some Miami player on the kickoff in the first quarter for a penalty and that was the last time I noticed him.

and we are yet to use Cook in that passing game with his blazing speed. We are winning now and need to keep those under wraps for the playoffs.

Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?
The Cincinnati Kid replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
The Bills pass protection tonight was almost exclusively big on big, meaning the OLman had the DLman or blitzer across from them *no matter where they went.* Stunt, move with your man. Slant? Move with your man. Etc. The Bills also almost never had an extra back or TE in the protection scheme. So, those two factors, paired with the Dolphins above average pass rush meant Josh was going to throw quickly and underneath. At one point during the game the Primecast said Josh had the quickest release of his career in the game. All of that to say this: IT WAS THE GAMEPLAN. Make sure to call into WGR with your thoughts. And who cares if it was Palmer or Coleman being exceptional or Jaire beinh horrible? They *checks notes* got open, made the catches and won the game in moments where they had to get open and make the catches. This is like rage fandom. “My team won, but I can’t find happiness so they suck!” Kick rocks. -
