May Day 10 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago (edited) Once the Diggs trade was made, they needed to go all in and clear the cap, get younger, faster, bigger, and hungrier for the back 9 of Allen's career. Short term pain for long term gain. They haven't done that. They have made a series of bad decisions, bad contracts. They are in a really bad spot. Lots of $ next season already committed going to no production. They seem out of ideas all the time and resort to playing all the old hits. Hyde, White, Power, Phillips, Gabe, etc. Edited 41 minutes ago by May Day 10 1 Quote

Sorry but the schedule is brutal next year and Maye needs to prove he can come back from two score deficits. Not to mention win in the postseason. The overall strategy McDermott has a say in so if you want to argue too much on defense etc its legit to point to both of them. But Beane is 100% the one evaluating and selecting players. You sure about that or just speculating? 1 Quote

But do they get a pass because.....? I am guessing their fanbases are not as critical of their play as some Bills fans are of Josh's play but I don't follow their fans so I could be wrong on that. I dont think anyone is giving Josh a complete pass. I think the crux of the matter is that it is past time to do something about it other than hope he plays better. We know what he is capable of. Is the offensive struggle this year more because of him or the scheme or his supporting cast? He is a proven commodity, but Brady is not and the receiving group have proven to be below average. So, of course Josh could play better but that almost doesn't matter inthe grand scheme of things. The whole offensive philosophy needs to change, scheme and talent. Unless the Bills can field a defense like the Texans or Eagles, the team should build around making Allen look electric. That's my view anyway. I think the Ravens should probably look at a change of coaches. KC? They have a long leash because of their unmatched success over the past half decade or more. Personally, I dont think Mahomes is a main problem in KC. Their weapons (and oline) have let them down, similarly to Allen's. Edited 1 hour ago by tigerthelion Quote

I have spoken to two people who have worked in that building and been in the draft meetings and in the room. Neither are still in the organisation but both have confirmed to me absolutely that Brandon Beane runs personnel. The evaluations and the decisions are his. He and McDermott are aligned strategically but the evaluations and selections are Brandon Beane. Quote
Virgil Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago All I can think about is “how much worse can it get?” Our defense is average at best, with a defensive minded HC trying to pull double duty. Having a veteran DC can’t do much worse in my opinion. Brady is doing the same thing he did in Carolina, which would lead me to believe he can’t turn it around. We should have our choice of OC with Josh and Cook as fun toys. The Culture was fixed and appears to now be heading in the wrong direction. So, to me, no where to go but up. Quote

I stand corrected. Quote
billsfan714 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago This off season Beane has his work cut out for him and its self induced. Everyone knows we need a receiver. We are currently over the cap. Guys not signed for next year: Just the DL Bosa, Ogunjobi, Daquan, AJE. Linebackers Milano, Shaq. Secondary Tre, Cam, Ingram, Poyer Potential Cap casualties, Knox, Samuel(god willing). OL McGovern not signed. Other guys like Moore, Guy you might want to upgrade from Rapp. Man thats a lot to replace with not much money and a draft. Hoecht and Carter will be coming back from achilles injuries. Thats going to have to be one hell of a draft next year and we're going to need those guys do more than "flash". I think we have seen peak Beane and the curve will be on the down slope. Quote

If you want to say, for example, that they spend too many resources on defense then that is broader strategy and both of them have their hands in the blood on that. If you want to say "Kaiir Elam was a bust" or on the flip side "James Cook is a stud" that is on Brandon Beane. 1 Quote

I think almost nothing would rejuvenate the fan base more than bringing in fresh blood and a second set of eyes regarding this team. I can't imagine how low the overall mood and level of enthusiasm will be if we decide to run it back again with the same philosophy and players. Quote

If they keep asking McDermott to coach a Beane built roster it won't get any better. But they are tied as far as I am concerned. One goes both go. I dont see positives in McDermott. I think we already got all he has to offer. Team building, picking us up out of the gutter. I know there's no proof but I would guess he has a lot of influence on draft picks. If we didn't have Josh staying the course would be fine. Not getting a superbowl with him would be a crime though. And our guys in charge simply aren't good enough. All this and I'm betting we win a playoff game this year anyway. Quote

You're probably 100% right actually, despite what "people in the building" say. Do you think any normal GM, who wasn't hired by the HC like Beane was, would spend their first five draft picks on defense and their sixth on a blocking TE when you have Josh Allen and no #1 WR? BuffaloBaumer Posted 52 minutes ago Posted 52 minutes ago I think we are getting close to the territory of Beane being one of the worst GMs in the NFL. His draft picks, contract extensions, and lack of trading for proper pieces have been abysmal. Below are his highlights, and I am sure I am missing some but man, he is looking terrible right now. Trading for Diggs - worked out although hindsight obviously shows keeping the pick and drafting Jefferson was way better Drafting Allen - this is the only reason he still has a job Notable draft picks over his tenure - Spencer Brown, James Cook, Terrel Bernard, Torrence, Bishop, Shakir, Benford, Teller (traded) Quote

And if it gets worse, what, the Bills do not win a SB? They haven’t anyways. What's the difference? Worst case scenario they look for another HC. I hate this idea of keeping a HC because the new guy might be worse. If the new guy sucks, cross that bridge when you get to it. Quote

I have proof the other way. He does not influence individual picks. The positive in McDermott is he is a good football coach. Witness the improvement on 3rd down defense since he took over playcalling as yet another example. Sean McDermott can coach football better than most people on this planet. Do I see an immediate route to it getting better from here for this regime though? No I don't. And I genuinely don't see any benefit in saddling him with a new GM who he doesn't have chemistry with or vice versa Beane with a Head Coach. That never works and just delays the inevitable. Quote

He says their player specifications are absolute. They are interesting because they apply positional value far LESS than many teams. But their specifications on what a D end needs for their scheme, what a corner needs etc are gospel. How exactly has that worked over 3 decades and multiple coaching staffs? Sounds like their coaching staff might be required to be a bit more flexible and use the talent that Newsome drafts... Quote

Well he could hypothetically just pick the new gm. Again. Someone there's chemistry with. Maybe that pool opened up more since he started wearing the Lisa Loeb glasses.
