I love Al Bundy. He's one of the all-timer's in my book but as others have mentioned there are so many other great ones it's tough to give him the crown as the greatest ever.

I would have to go with George Costanza as my goat.

Some other honorable mentions that haven't been brought up yet:

Frasier Crane

Cliff Claven

If you open this up to cartoon characters Homer Simpson

If cartoon characters are added then I have to go with Pinky & The Brain.

There's too many greatest characters out there that were hilarious:

Robert Petrie(The Dick Van ***** Show)

Eddie Haskell(Leave it to Beaver)

Hawkeye Pierce & Colonel Flagg(M*A*S*H)

Herb Tarlek & Les Nessman(WKRP in Cincinnati)

Sam Malone & Frasier Crane(Cheers)

Alex Keaton(Family Ties)

George Costanza(Jerry Seinfeld)

Jack McFarland(Will& Grace)

Barney Stinson(How I Met Your Mother)

For me, it's Peter Griffin by a mile.

Yup, I’m an old guy.   Tim Conway and Harvey Corman were the best.   But Carol and Vicki held their own.

The Carol Burnett show was a great show. Going with another older show then Lucille Ball is in the conversation from her I love Lucy show.

Alan Young - Wilburrr - Mr. Ed - a comedy for the 60's

Mister Ed is one of the few series to debut in syndication and be picked up by a major network for prime time. All 143 episodes were filmed in black and white.

Off shoot of Francis the Talking Mule

Lucy is the 1st person I think of and is my pick. She’s a Mt. Rushmore lock. Was the driving force for the boom of TV sales in the ‘50’s. I still often bust out, even after watching the entire “I Love Lucy” series every winter for decades. Only other sitcom I have made that kind of commitment to watch is Seinfeld, which of course I laugh at non stop most every time.
