There are some legitimate criticisms to make of McDermott. Some of which you allude to in your first para. But your contention in the OP is still completely wrong. Nobody is trying to cement him in a pantheon of great coaches.

He’s a really good head coach - that’s not changing. When he eventually gets fired and lands with another team (because he will), he’ll win there too.

The only thing missing is a Super Bowl. Add that to his regular-season success, and he’s in the pantheon. Nothing else will get him there though, you can’t be there without it.

Threads like this are funny to me because it is not like he came into a great franchise and just kept it sailing, he turned us from losers into winners. If you take away the second year he was here when we purged the roster roster he would have the highest win percentage of any coach currently in NFL and he is currently above McVay, Peyton and Reid. The dude deserved his credit. That being said if no SB win this year we should look to see who we can bring him to make it happen, we have built this team as best we can for him

I seem to remember Madden winning a SB decisively against the Vikings.

8th season, you're right

If it's such a nothing stat - than why isn't there more coaches in the modern era who can make the claim?

I get having issues with McDermott as a coach. But complaining that Mike Florio is reporting on a stat that puts him in rare air is kind of ridiculous. As is the idea that the Bills PR team is "working overtime" for this article. I highly doubt this is information that needed to be fed to Florio. This is the kind of stuff he reports on the daily.

Better off just to ignore it.    They will pick apart everything about McDermott because they still haven't gotten over 13 seconds.

OK. Then do it by winning percentage. That neutralizes the season length factor. Out of 32 coaches, McD is ranked number 4.

Pantheon of "greatest ever" I think it would take more than 1 Superbowl. I agree with a Superbowl he will be among the best of his era, but given the comparison was guys like Paul Brown I don't think one Superbowl gets McD into that territory.

Actually, I'm not a "fire McD" guy but any Bills fan with a pulse would have to confess some disappointment with him.  It's not the "zero Superbowls" thing, it's that with a "defense-minded coach" we've had way too many games where we couldn't get a stop on third down, especially with all the draft capital we've invested on defense.

And I may have said this once or twice (or maybe 15 times) - I think his biggest failure is NOT 13 seconds, but his failure to be accountable for 13 seconds.  It was clearly a coaching meltdown in several aspects, yet he's never owned it or told us why it won't ever happen again.

So I think he's a guy who's got a damaged public persona, and some geek with a new HP calculator found a way to put him on the same list as Paul Brown.  It sounds pretty lame to me.

Still, I don't buy the "fire McD" approach, partly because so many new coaches fail and partly because I'm a Sabres fan too and I've seen what happens when Terry gets to hire folks.

The bolded sentence is an absolute fail. Do you always tell other people what they must think? I have a pulse, have followed everything about the Bills for 55 years, and am VERY happy McDermott is our coach. He will remain in that position and continue successfully for as long as he wishes. Get over yourself.

How lucky are we that we can complain about a coach getting 100 wins this quick?

I’d trade those 100 meaningless games for one Super Bowl win.

Yea. If we had lost every regular season game we'd be much more likely to win a superbowl.

Well by necessity you can't win a Superbowl without winning some other games. So they are not all meaningless and if you traded all of them you can't win a Superbowl.

Dumbest article ever, trying to cement Sean's place in the "pantheon" of great coaches.

What the person who wrote this doesn't know (why would they?) is that the NFL season was only 12 games until 1960 (Paul Brown's era) and was only 14 games from 1961-1977.  The 17th game was only added in 2021, which the PR team apparently knew.   And until the Superbowl era (1967) there were no playoffs, just a championship game between the two conference winners.  So Paul Brown would have coached no more than 13 games in any season.  In Sean's era, it would be 20 games assuming he went to a Superbowl, which he would have done if he was properly one of the 6 greatest coaches ever.

Dannny, your making yourself sound silly with your arguments against McDermott’s time as a head coach, it took Andy Reid twenty one years of what was then considered futility to win his first championship, so lighten up, get yourself a cocktail and a smoke and relax, 😁🍸🚬

Two things can be true at once.  He's a very good regular season coach and has created a winning culture for this team since he got here in 2017.  He specializes in defense and this defense has let us down five years straight in the playoff losses against Mahomes (4x) and Burrow (1x).  This is just another thread in the endless McDermott conundrum talk and none of it matters because Pegula isn't firing McDermott any time soon.

ALL of this is correct!

McD is a very good, regular season HC.
He is a failure every time in the biggest playoff games.

Those are the facts, Jack.

In the vast majority of the most critical playoff games, his QB- the same who contributed mightily to his impressive Regular Season Win totals, has left the Bills and McD with the lead late.

His D cannot prevent the failure.

We all hope that the D improves, because the Bills fortunes rest almost solely on 17.

The Bills were 24-24 the last 3 years before McDermott got here and is 10-11 in games that Josh hasn't started.

Correct

Because the  McDermott would have been fired and we'd have another coach who would have won one by now
