  • BillsFan619 changed the title to James Cook wins the Angry Runs scepter again

The first tweet is nonsensical/straw man territory. If there is a spread of several weeks, can't both things easily be true? Especially if the games where Allen was most asked to carry the team are also the games where his play was the worst?

Also, which specific run earned Cook the scepter? I'm mostly remembering untouched yardage (~75% before contact WTF?!), so am I just omitting a particularly violent but less memorable rush? Could be.

Cook runs angry always.  I’m amazed at his power.  He emerges from large piles of defenders.  He will have half the D on him, and he keeps churning his legs, steadily moving forward.

Want a scary thought experiment?  Imagine if how our offense looked if we didn’t have Cook?

"Not a 3 Down Back"

"Not a Top 10 RB in this league"

"Isn't even worth 10m a year"

"We'd be better off with Ray Davis"

There were a few people saying these things. A very small few.

The things many people were actually saying were these.

  • "Hasn't shown himself to be a pass blocker, a "
  • "Hasn't shown himself to be a top six guy, much less a top two to four guy, which is who you pay $15M a year to."
  • "Hasn't shown himself to be worth $15M a year."
  • "Davis isn't as good. But we might get by with him and another answer or two in 2026 if the alternative is to pay Cook $15M a year without seeing whether he proves he's worth it in 2025."

At this point he does look worth the $15M contract he asked for. I thought he was going to play this year without a second contract and try to earn the big numbers, or that if he wanted a contract this year he'd settle for around $10 - $12M. He didn't want to bet on having a great year and on staying healthy, which I totally understand, it would have been a big bet on his health. And based on how he's playing so far this year he might have easily have gotten the $15M if he stays healthy and productive.

I didn't think he'd be as good as he's been, I didn't. But I knew it was a possibility, as did most of us, even the ones who thought that paying him $15M based on what he'd shown in his first three years was not a smart idea.

He wasn’t a three down back.    I don’t recall seeing too many people saying your next three quotes.   I think you’ve dramatized “He’s not elite”, “he’s not worth $15 million”. and “Ray Davis would be an adequate replacement.”.  To close, he’s become elite, and good for us.    I’m not criticizing the assessments of others at the time they were made.

Cook has been a star. I do wish Brady and his brain trust would figure out a way to use him more in the passing game tho.  12 receptions 13 targets but only 89 yards.  We used him heavily in the Ravens game, but 3 targets in the last three games.

I remember a guy named Thurman Thomas used to mean defenses had to account for him, often with a CB or safety in the passing game.
