BigAl2526 Posted Wednesday at 01:17 AM Posted Wednesday at 01:17 AM Hairston might have been healthy enough to play shortly after week one. This takes the pressure off though. I don't know that Tre White's timeline back to health is any shorter, but as a veteran, the Bills probably figure that as soon as he's healthy, he can probably play, whereas Hairston, being a rookie would benefit from having some practice time before he steps on the field on a game. Codrington is worth the roster spot IMO, he almost broke a couple last year - won't be surprised to see him with a house call this season. Ingram is our Swiss army knife. I’ll be surprised if he's given a chance to do much, outside special teams - hes the insurance policy at too many spots. I agree Codrington is the best option. Davis has no ability to break a return for a TD. Thats an especially important factor with the new kickoff rules. 2 Quote

Any of the other backups could be the odd one out. Agree it is Carter and Solomon the likely Dline casualties though it DQ looks even more washed than last year then maybe... the other route they can is cutting a DB given how many they kept... if Bishop has nailed down the job might they feel more relaxed moving on from say a Damar Hamlin? Probably need to get over my little developmental crush on Solomon. Exactly the kind of sleeper prospect I like to follow. Some traits and serious college production, but also some limitations. If only the Bills developed d-linemen the way they develop the 2nd and 3rd levels of defense. Quote

Problem is he will probably be a healthy scratch. Hell they might even elevate Phillips from the PS on game day and sit Carter. Solomon or Epenesa goes when Hoecht comes off suspension. Assuming Bosa stays healthy. Lundt or VanDemark go when Grable can play. Who dresses on game day may give some clue who is low man on the roster. Sorry to be an alarmist but CB is still a disaster. Counting on White lasting 4 games is very risky and can the rookie even play? 1 Quote
folz Posted Wednesday at 02:50 AM Posted Wednesday at 02:50 AM (edited) I think the only way they could let Codrington go was if Shenault could also handle punt return duties. I really liked Shenault as a kick returner (and it seemed he offered more at his position than Codrington does at his). But, apparently they weren't sold on him at punt return (he only had one punt return for 7 yards in the pre-season---he has no punt returns in 4 years in the league---not sure how he looked at practice). Plus, it might have been tough to keep 7 receivers---we weren't even sure if they would keep 6. The only reason I thought Codrington might be in trouble is because he was inactive for all 3 playoff games last year...I assume because he wasn't able to also help on defense which was needed due to injuries. We had Davis and Johnson handle KOs and Shakir handle punt duties in the playoffs. But I don't think the team wanted any of those guys doing it all season. Now, I have no problem with Codrington as our returner though, I think he is a very good returner, I was just hoping they could maybe maximize the roster spot if someone or two someones could beat him out (and who might help more at their position duties). And it has been said elsewhere, but why are so many people all of a sudden down on DeWayne Carter? I thought he was starting to come on last year (showing flashes) before the injury. I didn't keep up with camp as much this year as usual (other than watching the preseason games), so is there something I don't know about? Did something happen in camp to make so many people down on a 3rd round pick going into just his second year? None of these cuts were surprises, but these are guys I liked that got cut (along with Big Phil ☺️) Jimmy Ciarlo Frank Gore, Jr. Zach Davidson Shane Buechele Kristian Wilkerson Laviska Shenault (more so for his kick returning than at WR) But hopefully, most of them will make it to the practice squad...so no real loss. Very happy for Shavers! Edited Wednesday at 03:49 AM by folz 1 1 Quote

Van Demark should not be cut...there really ought to be a trade partner if we want to move him. Has the league-wide paucity of OLine talent really been addressed to the point where a capable young tackle isn't worth a 5th? 1 Quote

Why not wait and add him to the practice squad if that was their original intent? It allowed him to get into the building and start working out at team facilities etc. prior to cut-down day. Basically just got a two-day head start on season prep for him. Quote

Has the league-wide paucity of OLine talent really been addressed to the point where a capable young tackle isn't worth a 5th? Van Demark hasn't exactly displayed the value we've previously ascribed him during this preseason, has he? The book on him has seemingly been that he can play replacement-level ball at LT, but is not so serviceable at RT. And then he pooped the bed all together against Chicago. And might have been disappointing in one of the other games as well? I don't love him as the swing tackle tbh. Hopefully Grable gets well sooner rather than later. Anderson is probably only an IOL now except for injury constituencies or 6OL alignments. Lundt I don't think looked super ready to dress on gamedays at all. Suddenly our vaunted (even by me, repeatedly) O-line depth doesn't look quite so deep. Maybe overreacting to Anderson and Van Demark looking less compelling in our limited glimpses this summer, and Grable getting banged up. Quote

He has seen the field and acquitted himself well enough for a short term and/or rotational stint. Plus he offers position/scheme flex (dime/nickel safety looks) and probably would play STs? Who are candidates to be cut and reliably signed to PS? Lundt? Hamlin (doubt it)? Or maybe a sneaky "injury" somewhere simplifies the decision... Quote

And I think my man Ingram is going to surprise folks. This is going to come off a little hot and I'm not singling you out, as I saw many posters doing this with their 53 predictions. But if you're the type of person who is surprised that Codrington made it, you're also probably the type of person that completely ignores Special Teams when putting a Roster together amd focuses 100% on what a player brings in their positional grouping on Offense and Defense. Year in and year out, they've shown that is not how this regime operates. McDermott said on Hard Knocks and says every year "multiple players are going to make this team for Special Teams alone". It's not just lip service. On multiple roster projections, I saw people cut all of the Returners we used in Training Camp and the Pre-Season. When i'd ask who the Returner is, they'd say this person or that person can handle it. Basically with a "just put someone back there, it doesn't matter" sort of mentality. And again, that's just not how they do things. When no one impressed in last year's Return competition, they went out and trade for, and rostered Brandon Codrington for the job. And that was when the Return game was marginal at best. This year, there's actually going to be Returns and the Return game has added importance. There's no way they were just going to throw Ty Johnson back there and call it a day. A roster spot was going to be given to the winner of the competition between Codrington and Shenault - who handled pretty much all of the returns in Training Camp and the Pre-Season.
