He won and lost one yesterday.  He won the catch challenge and lost the challenge that tangent, I think it was tangent could advance the ball after fumbling.

Wasn't his name Bagent.  And I thought that McDermott was arguing that the ball went forward and was therefore an incomplete pass.

First of all nobody should freak out. McDermott did say before the joint practice he would decide after it how to treat this game. By all accounts the Bills showed well in practice and as such they sat a ton of guys here. The Bears were playing a team, or a team and a half above the Bills all night.... but there were some things that could be taken from it..... even if my first reaction was "Wow... gotta find five "good nights" out of that!" Anyway, glad I only stayed up for the first quarter before going to sleep. Have watched the rest of the game this morning so here goes:

Good write up, nothing really to add, pretty much agree with everything you said.  I said before preseason began that Shavers probably ends up on the PS.  But then after the rest of camp and the first preseason game, I posted that I think Shavers may already be ahead of Moore, and a big reason was not only was he playing better at WR thus far, but he was playing more and playing well on ST.  Moore and Samuel at the end of the WR bench bring very little value there.  For the Bills to keep no WR's that can help on ST much means those 5 guys better be balling, and they just arent.

Now after the 2nd preseason game, I think Shavers is ahead in the competition with Moore.  On a side note, Samuel hasn't done anything either to keep his job security up either.  BUT - his advantage is worse contract to cut and he has experience with Josh, Brady, and the offense.  So I think its Shavers or Moore and right now, if I had to bet on one, I would bet on Shavers.  Would it surprise me to see them send Shavers to PS and keep Moore - No - but I still think Shavers is the betting favorite now over Moore.

To me the difference is the Bills have more versatility in the secondary with guys like Lewis, Hancock so they don't need Codrington to play at all, only return.  While  at WR the Bills don't have that much versatility  or maybe not anyone with Shenault's speed so for those reasons I give him the edge.

I could see Shenault taking snaps at WR in a game, doubt you'd see that from Codrington on defense.

Shenault is a terrible receiver though.

Hoping Shenault and Shavers make this team. I'll have to trust the staff to decide what to do with Moore and Samuel?  Also love to see Wilkerson make the PS.

Wilkerson has won a PS job I think. He will be their next Shavers esque project.

I disagree. If Shenault has a positional advantage over Coddy, it’s that Shenault can potentially play multiple roles on ST, not just returner. Not sure much weight that carries, or if the coaches would want their return man to also be a core special teamer.

They may cut Cole Bishop.

Which would be shockingly early but he sucks.

PS, I love how Ben Johnson plays offense. Even in the pre-season. So hard to defend, even with limited QB’s.

No way do they cut Cole.  We have not seen him out there with all the #1's.

When you play with garbage... you look like garbage..

I thought this teams defense made a significant dropoff after we canned Leslie Frazier but watching this team the last 2+ years since fundamentally and schematically they look pretty similar to what he ran.

So the other real big chance has been the loss of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer.   We've really been starting backups at safety ever since they left and it shows.   I gotta say I'm not too thrilled at the prospect of yet again using a 1st round draft pick next year on a safety and neglecting to get Josh Allen more weapons but it's pretty clear that's where this is leading.

Last night's poor performance should be an indictment on Beane as much as any of the players that were on the field.   We've stacking a lot of draft picks that have had very little contribution to this team now.

1st rd safety just should not happen. Sign someone thats not dumpster diving for value. Upper middle end of money, and get it done with.

Im not ready to give up on him yet but if he doesn't come around this season, thats the move

Just saw PFFffffft's ratings for the game.  Here are the top 5 Bills grades on offense:

TE Jackson Hawes: 91.4

WR Deon Cain: 77.5

RG Mike Edwards: 74.3

WR Kristian Wilkerson: 71.6

RB Frank Gore Jr.: 67.9

I think this tracks.  I didn't really notice Cain but agree with the others.

Agree with you there too, but do think there's also a better chance you'd see Shenault take snaps at WR than Codrington taping snaps at CB

Maybe, but think he's less or a terrible receiver that Codrington is a terrible CB

The other thing I keep coming back to is that Coddy was a healthy scratch in the playoffs last year. To me that means he needs to be significantly better this year to warrant that roster spot. With the season on the line, the coaches thought that the dropoff to Davis/Johnson would be outweighed by having an extra backup at whatever position.

Maybe. But not enough to make me give him an edge in the returner battle. If ge is taking snaps at receiver you are in a very, very dark place.

I was thinking the same thing about Bishop.  He could be cut. Guy doesn't even look built like a football player in the slightest.  Didn't he play safety at Utah.  Why is he always out of position playing the position he played in college.  Something really seems amiss.  Hancock at leasts looks and plays like a football player.  And has loads of upside.

I did not watch the second half of the debacle on Sunday night.  But Cain looked good last year in the preseason.  Has decent size and speed.  Why is it never an open competition at WR on this team.  Its like we go into OTA's and training camp with the team pretty much set at WR every year.  I was reading that we had like one of the least roster turnovers from last year.  We need some new juice at WR.  Why not keep Wilkerson Shavers and Cain?  And put them with Coleman Shakir and Palmer.  Moore and Samuel are small and injury prone.  If not all three of those.  Keep Chenault to return kicks and be a gadget guy.  And go with Shavers and either Wilkerson or Cain.
